I have no TV and no cable, I've been doing without these unnecessary iteams for about five years, the result is my home is quiet and relaxing. I read used books I buy from the library and listen to music off my phone. Because I'm no longer hooked to a TV, I've learned to live without wanting things that just fill the house with and don't bring any happiness. Cut the cord 8 to 10 years ago and got TIVO ROAMIO OTA. Best decision I ever made. We were spending $1500 a year. Now internet is $600 per year and all the other pay for streaming is about $500 per year (including PRIME which has other benefits) Much better than cable which was $133 per month for basic service and internet. TIVO stuff totaled around $800 one time cost but that included lifetime subscription to guide. The TIVO Peanut Remote is the best remote I have ever used hands down. Feels balanced in your hand and easy to use with fast response which is spot on. Is an RF remote which means no pointing at the receiver all the time. The newer version out now is the TIVO EDGE OTA which seems to be even better updated for 4k. I figure I have saved over $5000 during the 8 years which could pay for a nice vacation or cruise. !NEVEREVERGOBACK!

You have a good point there. The one saving Grace I feel is that it's easier for streaming companies than cable companies to present content because they don't have to maintain an infrastructure. With that said it could keep prices down due to competition. It will be interesting to see how it evolves. Example: DirecTV and their streaming service.

Side load a few TV and movie apps to really get the most of it. This is the beginning of our cable free journey and we are on a tight budget with building our home, so this works for us.

I did this about two years ago-at the wife's insistence. I have a Sony "dumb" HD TV and have a 4K TV. Both are attached to Apple TV boxes, the 4K is attached to the Apple 4K. What I find is that I'm watching more and more on my iPad, and not my TVs. I still have not set up an antenna, but I do have a suggestion: If you stick an outdoor antenna in your ATTIC and point it in the right direction, it is 90% as good as an outdoor antenna attached to your chimney on your roof. Higher is always better. And you can get a distribution amplifier and simply pipe coax to all of your sets and you do not need a multiple tuner. Simply switch your TV to the antenna and you are all set. Thanks for the review!

Thanks a bunch, Phil. Great vid. Very informative. I've taken the plunge myself and cut the cable. We were at $279.00/month with one of the big cable companies. I'm running a POS non-smart flat screen tv with an Amazon Firestick via ethernet cable. I'm currently using KZbin TV as my main provider. $50.00/month with unlimited DVR. It has almost all of the channels that I used to watch on cable. I also have Amazon Prime so I get all of that content as well. So, essentially I have way more tv content than I will ever have the time to watch. I bolt-on premium channels like HBO, Showtime, and Netflix as needed for specific content and then dump them when the series ends. Our gig internet here in the Washington, D.C. area is about $99.00/month. I end up with a baseline of about $150.00/month plus whatever bolt-ons I add and subtract. It all works quite well. When you keep in mind that if you lived in any country ending in 'istan' that same $2000.00/year would feed a family of four nicely it's a bit embarrassing. But, I have a boring life so I live vicariously through my TV. Welcome to America, here's your remote. Cheers Tim

That means for every $100 you spend on internet, they only pay $3 for upkeep of that network. They offer unlimited data only. If you think a 97% profit margin is too low for them to succeed as a company, so they should start to charge MORE fees for using too much data, then tell me any other industry that has such high profit margins, you'd be hard pressed to find anything, maybe jewelry.

All of the equipment will last for a minimum of 10 and most likely 20 years, the only thing possibly needing replacing would be the streaming devices, like the Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV, so we'll say $60 a year, or $5 a month. Saving $800 a month would mean that by the time the equipment is really "obsolete", they would have saved 800x15-2303-(60x15) = $8,797. Yeah, their is no way this method would save money. Unless you go through all your TVs in 3 years, then I would recommend looking at your attitude towards buying tech first.

i cut the live tv cord in Feb, only have netflix and amazon prime. Total is like 25$/mo, but actually i purchased two items thru amazon and saved over 100$ vs buying directly from the vendor, so my amazon prime video is basically free for the next year. I might get youtubetv for football, but will then cancel. saving some serious $$$$

Good lord, so many devices! We are on the fence about cutting the cord and doing something similar. We are right at $230 a month for phone, cable and internet with Comcast. We are paying right at $40 a month just in cable box rental fees. This option seems doable, but just a little overwhelming when factoring in the devices needed. We have a Roku and my kids each have a smart tv. Lots to consider.

I had a mutiny on my hand the first time I tried cutting the cord a few years ago. Fortunately, things have improved so much now that my wife was game and seems to be happy with the setup on various TVs in the house. It helps that KZbin TV apps on the LG, Samsung, and Roku box all look and act the same. Same thing with Netflix and Hulu.

I'm with you, Phil! Once my wife mastered the Nvidia Shield TV interface, she was happy. As simple as going to HDHomeRun for live OTA or to Netflix/Hulu/Prime Video from the App menu on the Shield. Me and my gf tried the whole cord cutting thingy. It lasted about 2 days. Since we are AT&T customers, we went with DirectTV Now. We could have dealt with getting used to the interface, the occasional buffering and the slightly lesser picture quality, but the complete lack of Digital 5.1 audio was a deal breaker. Upon further investigation, I learned that none of the live tv streaming services had 5.1 audio. Hopefully this changes in the near future.
@Jas0nAnders0n6 жыл бұрын
Agree, audio is half the experience! If you are not rocking at least 5.1/7.2 then you are missing the immersion factor and not getting what you pay for.

Cut the cable 10 years ago - With Cable TV you get what they want you to watch - want to watch more - you get to pay more...lots more - NOT WORTH IT! With a Streaming device you choose what you want and pay for only what you want - AND plenty of free stuff as well. AT&T, Cox and the other providers Customer Service SUCKS - don't like the service...they'll just offer you more of the same...Gee what a deal! So save a bundle, watch what you want to watch, and dump the Cable TV - it's a dinosaur!

@moderndad. I noticed that you have the same sound bar. What I also noticed recently is that KZbin TV was not broadcasting in 5.1 unless it was video on demand. Netflix, Hulu has it...
