Cool, I am excited for you! Get ready to use a lot of towels (drying those cords is what takes the longest), but the work is so rewarding. Good luck! 😊

LOLOL, @Rosa R., yes, not a breed for everyone, but honestly, they are the sweetest dogs (at least the few I have met.) And they get A LOT of attention when walking down the street - so probably one of the best companion dogs for breaking the ice (if that's what one is looking for.) But yup, expensive, high-maintenance, but I think definitely worth it. ❤ Thanks for watching!😍

Could you do a video on how you dry cords properly? I can’t find much info on youtube
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew, absolutely, and thanks for the suggestion! Ziggy, my regular Puli, just came in last week, so it will be a while before I see him again and can film. In the meantime, the basic principle is to scrunch with a towel (microfiber is great, and you'll go through a lot of towels) while stand-drying. I use low heat, but def some heat, and then I plant myself on a stool and separate cords while the air is blowing on each section. I don't want to use any directed nozzle drying as that will upset the cords. And to mention towels again, I have a towel under the dog, and I change that a few times throughout the process. Hope this helps and good luck!

Your videos are absolutely fantastic. I'm beyond happy that I found you. I'm going to learn alot. I'm in Los Angeles. Do you have recommendations of groomers that truly understand the Puli coat? My baby bear is 13 months old. Sometimes I feel I can't keep up but your videos have relieved that stress. I still would like help! Thank you!

Hi Duchess, wow, thank you! 🙏 So glad to be of service, and so glad we found each other! Ok, regarding Puli groomers in LA (which I was one for quite a time), they are rare. People come from afar, and I was never really a Puli expert - just willing to study and apply my professional knowledge to a different type of coat. The avenue I would pursue would be to talk to a local breeder. The name Kathy Allen is what pops up on the AKC.org website, and she's in Sacramento. A bit far, but she may have more insight into who's really focusing on this type of coat in the LA area. Here's the AKC link about her with contact info: marketplace.akc.org/breeder/kathy-allen-87008/puli/380377. But honestly, feel free reach out to me personally as well: gina@ginasgrooming.com. I'd love to chat about your experience and learn more about your puppy Puli journey! I think you are amazing to take on such a unique and wonderful breed and to do their coat justice! 💕

Gina! You seem so great! I have a Hungarian puli and I live in Baltimore Maryland, and there doesn’t seem to be much knowledge among the groomers about how to handle her coat. Any recommendations for someone nearby?
@GinasGrooming

Hi Laura! I love Baltimore! ❤️ And I know, it's hard to find a groomer *anywhere* that works with corded dogs. I really encourage people to learn to do this themselves... it's work, for sure, but you can definitely learn... and it is such a great bonding experience with your Puli! Good luck and thanks for watching! 🙏😍

Great video thank you!! Do you have any recommendations for persuading the ends to cord? My poodle is currently still very fuzzy rather than corded
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Жыл бұрын
Thanks, @Zebra Blogs! That's awesome that you are cording your Poodle! I've been tempted myself, but now my Spoo is just a bit too old. So for the ends, you need to use a safe product that would dry and hold but not be sticky. I'd say regular pet styling gel can work (amzn.to/3WJVS87), but if you want to get creative (and I haven't tried it, but this is where my instincts would go) is to get Aloe Vera gel, something very natural, such as: amzn.to/3I5ESoF. This way if your pup licks it, it won't be harmful. Let me know if you try it and how it works! Good luck and thanks for watching!

Great video! Do you know if this is possible on a Maltipoo? I found havanesers with cords online. 😅 Thanks in advanced. Cathy from the Netherlands
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 5 ай бұрын
HI Cathy from the Netherlands, that is funny! 😆 I have never seen cords on a Maltipoo, but why not? It won't happen naturally, as you'll see on a Puli, Komondor, some Poodles with very tight, coarse curls, but if you treat the hair like human hair, you should be able to follow the same steps as a person looking to create dreadlocks. I am no expert, but I do believe it takes teasing, twisting, and training the hair to bind up in a corded configuration. Great question - and now I'm curious about corded havaneses, lol! 😍

I’m wanting to cord my standard poodle! She’s currently in a modified continental with tasseled ears. How long does her coat need to be to start cording? As well as are there any good recommendations you have to start from scratch? I keep her legs/hindquarters shaved in a rev10 and her body is currently about 1.5in long, as well as she’s 6 months old. Thank you!

Hi Alexandria! Omg, I love corded Poodles, esp in a Continental! Although I have always worked on corded dogs that are *already* corded, I looked into it for my own Standard a few yrs back, and it involves a small comb and teasing the clumps that naturally group together (you can see those form if u don't brush her for a week or so). The key is to keep the cords separated at the root so they don't pull like a mat. I think 1.5in is enough to start teasing and twirling! Send pics of progress if poss: gina@ginasgrooming.com. Thanks for watching!

I've been on a big dog research kick and got curious about the corded breeds. Do the cords ever need to be trimmed if they get too long to where they trip up the dog?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Жыл бұрын
Hi @Major! Great question, and love that you're on a dog research kick! Pulik (plural for Puli, pronounced the same) have an *undetermined* coat length, so like Poodles (and like most humans), the coat keeps growing and must be trimmed. I use industrial shears to cut the bottom of Ziggy's cords since my grooming shears are too fine and would get damaged. We have a Vlog about determined coats (think Husky, Lab) vs. undetermined coats (Poodle, Maltese, Puli), which discusses what dogs don't need haircuts vs. those that must. Hope that helps, and thanks so much for your comment! 👍😊

How much would you typically charge to cord a Puli?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Жыл бұрын
Hi @GoldenSecretz, not enough, lol! 😄 It is an expensive service (in my area you're typically starting around $250), but if an owner manages the cords in between, they can get away with coming every quarter. We'll be releasing an Apprentice Series walk-through with Ziggy in the next couple of weeks to really get detailed on the cord work, so look out for that in case that may help! Hope that answers your question and thanks for watching!

@@GinasGrooming interesting. I’m in school rn and we have one come in ever 3 weeks. And he gets charged $42 cause he gets a rare breed discount. I’m just curious on how much a lot of people charge to cord. It’s only cheap so we can learn from him cause obv it’s a school.
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Жыл бұрын
Ah, that makes sense, your school is probably trying to draw in rare breeds so that you guys can learn on them. But yes, in the real world, it breaks down to your hourly rate. So let's say you charge $70/hr as a baseline, a full Puli will take you about 3.5 hours (whereas a regular shih tzu puppy cut should take one hour once you have your roll down.) So bascially, I can do three little dogs in the time I do a full Puli, and Groomers should always be fairly compensated for our hard work and time. 😊 Congrats on learning how to groom - it takes a little bit to get your groove, but keep learning and hold on to the passion!!! Good luck! 🥰

@@GinasGrooming Gotcha. I’m trying to understand the best prices that groomers have listed. The day he was at my school took 8hrs which is the whole school day. It was my first time drying him and I almost got done drying him within 4hrs
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Жыл бұрын
@GoldenSecretz omg, that breaks down to less than $4/hr in the outside world! But your school sounds like a really good one to bring exotic breeds into your curriculum! Where are u and where are u studying? People ask me for good schools all the time, would love 2 refer...

Interesting! This is what I love about the global community! I've personally never heard that pronounciation, but that may be due to learning to groom on the East of the US, where vowels are given a bit more leeway! Thanks for your input, and thanks for watching!
