Is it possible to make this for UK customers? I'm in England and I want one of these for the failed 3D print melting fumes. I do worry about how it could be affecting the air and my health.

Do you think that the Noctua fan is powerful enough to handle a 10mm carbon filter? I have seen that some retail fume extractors are using 9mm or 10mm ones.

Why, oh why did I have to watch your channel?!?! All these fun projects! I watched about the AIXUN soldering system the other day. Now I need to get 1 or 2 or... I have been needing a fume extractor for some time. Now I can build my own. Just saw your vid on battery spot welding. Gotta make one of those as well. I am an RF/Antenna Engineer and have been for the better part of 25 years. I am unemployed for the moment but looking for some interesting projects to keep me going. Well done! I do enjoy watching and downloading the schematics & projects! Thanks!!

The circuit is not complex but adds more than necessary. A simple switch in line with the batteries and the dc jack straight to the fan with a diode to protect the batteries.

Nice product, deff gonna build it. I like that the batteries is recharged outside the circuit and the safety features. But why use 3 18650 with an average voltage of 11.1V instead of 4 like u normally use for 12V supply? That will also "greatly" increase the suck factor and likely the noice.

What a valuable video! And in more ways than expected - the comedy bit was hilarious! Thank you. Did anybody suggest, that placing the filter behind the fan might add to the suction? I do wonder how much the dense charcoal filter hinders airflow, and whether there would be any trade off in ways of fumes seeping through the cracks (instead of passing through the filter, after being hit by the blades of the fan)?

That is pretty cool. I still use an HVAC exhaust fan with a tube-style carbon filter as my DIY Fume extractor. A bit overkill but it also deodorizes my entire house when I use it. A bit noisy, and large but damn does it perform. I will scale it down one day.

Love this fume extractor that I had to make it. Just a question though. Would a 3S BMS be a better choice with the 18650 batteries since it would allow the batteries to be recharged in the battery compartment

Hmm, doubtful on the actived carbon filter actually being activated carbon. Going to a ducted box filled with real activated carbon (aquarium product source) with a old vacuum will get rid of the nasties a lot better. Google 'hepa solder filter activated'. Commercial filter pricings are nutz but are economical if you can make a few to split the cost with friends. I've never microwaved my PCBs that way, but hey, it's 2020, i'll give oit a go. ;-)

I agree the type of carbon filtration here isn't going to offer the best filtration possible. Though my own observations, I've noticed the air quality in my shed noticeable improved once I was using this extractor. So I believe the filter is doing something. But certainly not 100% effective! However, that's the tradeoff for a cordless, compact & portable unit. Be sure to only use a microwave with a "PCB Easy-Bake" setting ;)

@@Schematix 0% effective. Those fumes are just diluting in the air which makes you think they are not there. Maybe breathing diluted fumes in the general air is slightly better than breathing them in directly, but if you solder for a few hours and multiple days you will have breathing problems and headaches and inflamed sinuses. After years this could result in asthma or worse.

@AS-ug2vq

It's an activated charcoal filter, it does remove some chemical impurities.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 4 жыл бұрын
Ah it's not rubber, it's a sheet of activated charcoal! It's a bunch of charcoal pellets that have been foamed up to increase the surface area massively! It's one of the most potent filter materials known to mankind. It won't delete all the smoke not at this small amount but it it will for sure catch as good as all the polar volatile compounds and a good amount of particulate matter.
@JuulCPH
@JuulCPH 4 жыл бұрын
So does the 12 VDC wall adapter actually charge the batteries or do you need a separate charger? I'm also curious why you are using a relay. It is my understanding that relays are not appropriate for DC circuits since they can stick themselves into a specific state. Probably this wouldn't stay on for long enough on a battery charge that it would get stuck but if it did then the batteries would get discharged below the cutoff. Also, this might be nitpicking but when fully charged the 18650 cells will overvolt the fan by something like 0.6 to 0.75 volts if charged by an external charger.
@JuulCPH
@JuulCPH 4 жыл бұрын
Ah it looks like the batteries are not being charged so you'd need an external charger. Wouldn't it make more sense to add a cheap 3S BMS module and then have a physical switch if the user wants to bypass the batteries or run it without batteries? Those BMS modules are only around $2 shipped and have built-in over-discharge protection.

maybe you wired it in reverse, but the orientation of the fan should be blowing the smoke back at you. typically the side the fan mounts to is the direction it blows. i wonder how much more effective it would be oriented properly or less as it is wired as you have it. aside from that, i have a project that i built with a old PSU chassis and the 120mm fan that was in it, it doesn't work very well and now i can give this project a try, also using a 500k linear potentiometer didn't work so well even with a beefy 80Ohm military spec resistor in parallel i couldn't get more control over the speed. should probably look into buying a lower value, but using scraps. 😋

It's always better to have fume extracting. But the snowflakes of these days always seem to think that if you inhale one whiff, you're dead. You're not. Unless you're soldering EVERY DAY, for SEVERAL HOURS, an extractor like this is absolute and utter nonsense. Still, nic to have and simple design. You really need to do some work on your printer. The print quality is abysmal.
@DamnDealDone
@DamnDealDone 11 ай бұрын
Solder for three days in a week for just 2 hours each and you will have problems. Headaches, breathing difficulties, inflamed sinuses. Years of this and you could have permanent damage to your lungs and potentially your brain. A carbon filter does nothing. A HEPA filter is needed.
