I had a 1987 Mercedes 560SEL that still needed a whole lot of work to restore. Then I saw this car for sale on a dealer's lot. I managed to dump the Mercedes in a trade for it. Great deal, I love this Cordoba. It was stored since about 1988. Everything was still original, including the polysteel radial spare tire. Other than the AC, which needs charging, everything works, including the cruise control.
I removed the lean burn computer and put in a conventional vacuum advance distributor first thing. It ran much better, Then a 600cfm Edelbrock went on it with new dual exhaust system. Now it runs perfect. Luckily, this car was built in Canada, so it never had a catalytic converter. All fluids have been changed and a new radiator installed. The Corinthian leather is in good shape, but one button is missing on the driver's seat. The interior is beautiful.

Cool car. I have vivid memories of a Cross Country month long road trip to the West Coast and back with my Grandparents in a 1976 Cordoba. Summer of 1978. I was 9 at the time.

And what was insane is that eventhough he said that, the dumb car company sent one with velour and a bench seat for the commercial.. Of corse they made sure he had one with Corinthian Leather in the next years commercial. I don't think Chryslers leather or their supplier ever changed from then till now so I suppose all of Chryslers leather is"corinthian" leather. I know that on my 2000 Town and Country, the leather feels like the same type fromback then, very soft and cushiony.

Mom bought a used 76 this same color & pinstripe in either 83 or 84, when her 69 Chevy got too rusty to be safe. Her's had a 2bbl 360, non lean burn, and those rims with the molded rubber centers. The rear diff howled in that car, it would put me to sleep riding in the back as a little kid haha. Would love to find a clean Cordoba some day 🥰. Awesome car man, take car of it!

I owned one of these cars in the late 80s but the original owner put slotted aluminum mags on it to give it muscle look and it did have a 400 4 barrel but the coolest thing was it had power everything including seats and the air condition still worked, it was such a comfortable cruiser.

All Cordobas were V8-powered before 1980...during that latter year, the Slant Six was not offered in California! Only one transmission was ever offered in all Cordobas...the three-speed Torqueflite automatic!

@@mrceleb2006 small block Cordobas got the smaller TF 904 and the 400 CID Cordobas got the TF 727. Starting in 1977 (I think, might be 78) they came with the lock-up torque converter feature. GM followed a couple years later.

I bought mine from a dealer that had ordered it for his wife but she didn't want it. I paid 6200 dollars brand new. It was an Astral Blue with a white half top. This was the smoothest riding car I ever have been in, including the Town Car of this time. It was Chrysler's torsion bar suspension that made all the difference. Mine had crushed velour seats which I really liked. When it was time to leave home and go to college I gave it to my parents who drove it several years after that. What a car, I used to have the girlfriend snuggle up to me when we drove places. Never will be anything like these cars again.

studdogg11 : What a beautiful car. I hope you can replace the left tail light lens cover. I had a 1972 Chrysler Newport Royal 4-door sedan. It had that 400. Mine would haul ass and get 25 to 27 miles to a gallon of gas. No kidding. Mine had a 22 gallon gas tank. I had the car when I was in the Navy and stationed at N.A.S. Pensacola. I was married then. My wife and I lived in Warrington, on Bayou Grande, right across from the front gate of the Navy base. We could see the front gate from our back yard. My home is in Graceville, Florida. We could gas up the car in Warrington, less than a mile from the house we were renting, drive to Graceville for the weekend to stay with my parents; and drive back to Warrington on less than half a tank of gas; a distance of around 270 miles. If we stayed between 60 and 70, that car got excellent gas mileage for such a huge car. It started drinking the gas below 60 and above 70. That 400 is a bored out 383. Just about all the parts are interchangeable between a 383 and a 400 except the pistons. I do have a question. Why did you disconnect the lean-burn system? I have read someone else did the same thing. Why? It surprised me that your car does not have power windows. I would have thought that would have been standard on such a personal luxury car.
@studdogg11
@studdogg11 5 жыл бұрын
I'll start with the lean burn system. The engine wasn't running as good as it should and during warm up, it was awful. The computer board for the lean board isn't repairable because the whole board is covered with a poured on hard substance that can't come off. The only thing the computer did was to control the distributor vacuum spark advance. 1976 was the first year it was used on a Cordoba. So, I put in a vacuum advance distributor and electronic module just like the 1975 models had and it runs great. Just an added note, my car was made in Canada and never had a catalytic converter. As for the lack of power windows, I would say the original owner ordered this car and either didn't like them, or was afraid they would cause problems after awhile and so ordered it with manual windows. Just my guess. It is odd whereas it has most everything else. Everything still works too. You must've been very lucky with the gas mileage you got. And I mean very lucky. The very best I have recorded was 14.5 mpg. That was on a nice day drive mostly in the mountains of TN. My VW GTI gets around 36 mpg in the same conditions. No wonder the Cordoba has a 25 gallon gas tank. Oh ya, I did replace the tail light lens. The original fell out when I test drove it before buying it. Another note: it's a job to open the doors to get out if the car tilts and you have to push the door uphill. The door is big and mighty heavy. But it sure is luxurious, nicely padded and soft to touch.

@@studdogg11 You made a good move eliminating the lean burn system. The early years of that was very troublesome. In later years Chrysler got the bugs worked out of it, but the conventional Electronic Ignition system is much better. In 76 only the 400 came with Lean Burn. A 76 Cordoba with a 360 still had the conventional ignition system. My mom had a 76 with 2bbl 360, same color as yours including that pinstripe. She had different rims though, those ones with the molded rubber centers. They looked sharp 👌

Having owned a 560 SEL, then subsquently a nice '77 LeBaron coupe, I can tell you that the Mopars are better choices. The 560 was a swanky cost nightmare even though I bought it with a rebuilt engine and suspension. By contrast, the Chrysler cost little to maintain and honestly seemed just as luxurious to me.

I have the original carb on mine and it's never been rebuilt. I did put an Edelbrock on it, but it came off fairly quickly, not as good as expected. Mine will leak down into the engine when the engine is turned off after it's fully warmed up. Otherwise, it's fine as is. If you have the original carb, there's another mixture adjustment screw right in the middle. look down in the middle and you'll see it. I believe it adjusts the misuse throughout the full throttle range, not just idling. Play with that and see if it helps at all.

@@studdogg11 Alot of people assume the "lean burn" system was related to the carburetor, rather than the ignition system.
