This evolution of the ridgeline is very convenient, but it is still good to know how to set a ridgeline with nothing but raw cordage and knots. I’ve shifted gear seasonally or gotten a different tarp and forgotten my ridgeline. With the backup cordage I had packed it wasn’t a problem setting up since I knew some basic knots and how to use them to set my ridgeline.

Hi Blackie, thanks so much for all the quality information. I wanted to share something I discovered this morning that you may find interesting: an integrated Prussik soft shackle for a ridgeline. Simply make a loop about 12" long with some soft tarred bankline, then dress it into a soft shackle. Pass the soft shackle around your ridgeline twice as if making a Prussik, passing the knot & loop joined part through the hole, so they end up on the bottom. You're Prussik will be double stranded, but will dress exactly the same with 2 passes as a normal Prussik with 4 passes. The soft shackle underneath can then be used to grab your tarp grommet. It works excellent and keeps your tarp edge closer to your ridgeline. Since you are always coming up with great ideas to improve efficiency, I thought you might get a kick out of this concept. Cheers!!

Knowing some knots is extremely useful, no wonder your viewers requested it so often. But one thing: going through the loop one time makes a lark's head, going through twice makes the Prusik, going through three times makes the Double Prusik. With a thin line on a significantly thicker line, a (single) Prusik works allright, the Double Prusik you show works even with two lines of similar size. BTW: The Prusik and Double Prusik were developed by a mountaineer, looking for a way to self-rescue himself with a single static rope. Looking forward to your next video.

Hello Blackie, this may be a dumb question but when you stretched the tarp with the two prussic, why you did not place the tarp over the ridge line and use the same attachments. I think that would make the tarp set up stronger. There must be a reason for your set up, thanks, Luis

Blackie, while you are on knots. I found that I have been using the Stevesore’s Knot as a stopper knot. Stays tight and is fairly easy to untie if you need a clean line. Best of all, it is a fatter knot than an overhand. You can look it up, but basically is a combination of a figure 8 and timber hitch. I think you will like it. Works great for Felix Immler’s toggle strap trick. Especially for swapping a longer cord on your toggle right quick if you can’t just chain a second one.

@@blackoracle69 Had a typo. Stevedore. Which is an old word for dockworker/longshoreman. The knot was used to keep the rope from slipping through the pulley.

Hello Blackie, I have a cargo trailer that I have converted into a self contained camper. I want to use a tarp for an awning and have been pondering over different ways to attach the tarp to the trailer for easy set up. I may just use this idea to set up the awning on my CTC. I may use L brackets on each side of the trailer, run a permanent cordage from one to the other with attached toggles (one for each grommet) and use 2 outside poles. It will be easy to attach , set up and take down by myself. Thanks for the idea. Keep on teaching us Grey haired wolves, please.
