Abstract:
Using our state-of-the-art code Fornax we have simulated the collapse and explosion of the cores of many massive-star models in three spatial dimensions. This is the most comprehensive set of realistic 3D core-collapse supernova simulations yet performed and has provided very important insights into the mechanism and character of this 50-year-old astrophysical puzzle. I will present detailed results from this suite of runs and the novel conclusions derived from our new capacity to simulate many 3D, as opposed to 2D and 1D, full physics models every year. This new capability, enabled by this new algorithm and modern HPC assets, is poised to transform our understanding of this central astrophysical phenomenon.

It never fails to blow me away how fast the material is moving around the core during the bounce and neutrino boil.

Great speaker. Clear, concise, passionate. Now all I need is the intelligence to understand it.

yeah, it was hard to follow. I'm not an astrophysicist, but have been to a gazillion lectures, have a PhD, and was in the 10 person audience when Hans Bethe announced they accidentally discovered the explosion mechanism. Still good tho. it certainly helps to understand Ylm, Compton scattering, neutrino flavors, weak interaction, thermal radiation, a lil relativity, and some nuclear physics.

Great talk. Makes me want a supernova in the Milky Way Real Soon Now(TM) even more, and I'm not even talking about it being something optically visible. The neutrino science and potentially gravitational wave signature could go a long way in informing our understanding of the physics of exploding stars and either validating or disproving these 3D simulations.

Seriously, it totally blows my dog's mind when the treat she was expecting to be in my right hand comes to her from my left hand instead.

You have described his work over three decades in one sentence. This guy is a self promoting goon backed by faculty of same caliber. MIT and IVY leagues in general admit people who in essence are great good dog of learning and reproduce quickly. Keep one thing you are good at and spin one thing in 1 D, 2 D, 3 D and soon they will spit out 4 D and 5 D and people will go wow since the goon is from Princeton.

you do realize this should have been finished decades ago but because of the way we do things progress has kept it a snail's pace. I contacted Cambridge a decade ago looking for something like this, well actually looking for something a lot more expensive than this

By "the way we do things" do you mean the limits of supercomputers? Because I think the speaker made it pretty clear that this has been a major constraint in progress. Otherwise what was your idea to circumvent this?

People like you fail to realize that giants like Edwin Hubble, Shapely did decades of research to gather the data needed for their hypothesis. They needed next generation of the largest telescopes in the world to gather the data

MIT, Princeton, University of Arizona, exactly what has he discovered to have him title of a Prof.? He talks about things that he makes sure cannot be verified. He is like a art Prof showing audience painting and discussing about it but including him, all are blind. He should retire gracefully and spare us from his crap.
