Dr. Saul Zion and Dr. Meghan Mizrachi demonstrate the proper technique for engagement of the transversus abdominus. Progression from basic movement includes lower extremities (marching) and use of ball to engage adductors. Further progression includes extension of legs.

Would love to watch this and share it, but the video hangs up at 00:21 no matter how many times it's refreshed. I know this has been out for a while, so maybe not an urgent issue. But it began well, and I'd love to see the whole thing.

Is there a difference between this muscle being weak vs the muscle not engaging properly as it should causing lower back pains and making functional movements an issue?

Great question! Yes, we find that most of the time it's an engagement issue. We use the word weak as most people understand it to be that way but in effect it's the same. If you can't engage it, you're weak. This exercise is a basic exercise to have the patient start to understand what they should use with functional activities of daily living.

@@saulzion1354 yes see i struggle with my back just washing up at the sink, or taking long walks. Aches when laying on my back... just cant get rid of it.

I have a bad back and have no disc's in my lumbar region. This isn't correct as you should feel your stomach rise slightly when you do this exercise. It will feel like a wide weight lifting belt when you do it. Don't forget to breathe!

I tried this and blew a disc. Now by back went out and don't know where it went.

That's a danger of following PT exercises you learn on the internet even from reliable sources such as PTs. If you were in the office, a person would be supervising you and making sure that you're doing the exercise right and not doing something that is too hard for you. I'm not saying don't do exercises you learn over the internet - I do them too. But I've hurt myself following exercises I have learn over the internet. I've also hurt myself by using the same exercises that my PT taught me years ago but apparently when I restarted them on my own, I wasn't in a condition to do them.
