Core vs Laser Mining: Which Method Is Best?

If you are looking for just a laid back relaxing mining session laser mining is it. If you want the cool sounding explosions than core mining is what you want. The sub-surface extraction missiles were the absolute best money maker for about six months when they first came out but Fdev nerfed it and I am not sure were it stands on the profitability spectrum these days, it definitely required skill and practice to get good at it though. I think the mapped mining runs laser mining platinum are probably the most money you can make mining these days, however that requires you get real good at your three dimensional orientation and asteroid recognition. I think most mapped mining runs are in High Grade Extraction sites, so will have to contend with npc pirates also. I have never done a mapped mining run because I get disoriented to easy LOL. These days I spend most of my game time on planets looking for exobiology trying to make elite rank there also, presently one rank below elite in exobiology then I will have four elite ranks under my belt. I am looking forward to the completely brilliant red Artemis suit from helmit to boots. Presently my suit and boots are entirely red but my helmit is white, LOL.

As a relaxing activity or to diversify our gaming activities, I completely agree that mining can be something to consider, especially because it basically involves no risk, making it excellent for beginners. As for credits, I don't think the amounts we can earn are that attractive... the amounts earned will not be the main reason that will make someone mine, at least in my opinion. Many other activities, such as exobiology or stacked massacre missions, yield many more credits per hour than mining, not to mention hunting Orthrus in spiral sites, where we can easily get between 700 million and 1 billion credits per hour, even more than that after we gain some experience and if we team up with some companions.

My mining ships are always outfitted with 2 mining lasers, 1 abrasion blaster for surface deposits, 1 seismic charge launcher for core mining, and 1 subsurface displacement missile for subsurface deposits. I insist on an A grade Prospector limpet controller as it will get you the highest possible yield. I find an A rated prospector limpet controller does more to increase my credits per hour than having 4x lasers draining the capacitor. You get 200 tons per hour with 4 lasers. I get 300 - 500 tons per hour with 2 lasers. And my weapons capacitor seldom drops below 50%.

Laser mining in a squad scratches both itches IMO. Good fast money (it's even faster in a squad!) but also good to chill with friends.

I like combat but i also enjoy Laser Mining. Core mining is too difficult and boring to find the correct cracks and then the drilling minigame naaahhhh

For mining I like mining expeditions, either with the Squadron or sometimes solo. We are usually 1500 - 2500 Lightyears away from the bubble with our fleet carriers for mining. I have two accounts, both have a fleet carrier. My main account has a fleet carrier with a lot of modules and not the most cargo hold, the other one has no extras. I use the main carrier as an operating base and the other one is used as an oversized Transporter for the ore and fuel tanker for the other fleet carriers. The only downside is that it takes forever to sell the ore when the carrier is full, even with a shieldless Cutter.

Nice video, I have my miner for the three methods and usually mine all I can from every asteroid, probably not the best or more efficient way, but I prefer to extract everything from those big rocks.

finding core asteroids are pretty finicky, less popular spots tend to have more of them due to how they respawn. personally i prefer asteroids belts in secluded areas as one of 1-2 highlighted asteroids is often core asteroid, through that way you have less control what rare commodity you get. sometimes each part of the belt contains core so travel time between breaking them open is pretty short.

Yeah, got the carrier a while ago. Currently stockpiling it with platinum to fund the weekly upkeep and then heading out for a long trip, all the way to Colonia

If this is your "profession" in ED, then you have to proceed to a map mining. It exists for both laser and core ones. A mapped core mining is even more evolving than a traditional core mining, cause you have to deal with pirates with having your treasure cargo every time you want to proceed to a next core -) But rewards worth it. 200kk/h with a mapped laser mining (300kk/h with a +50% power bonus if you will be lucky to find a good price in your power system, which is rare), and about 130-140kk/h with a mapped core mining (but without that annoying attempts to recognize an asteroid with a core - I hate FD for that part of the game)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you also get different materials with each method? I failed hard at core mining. Took my Cutter and only got enough stuff to fill an Adder. I like flying through the rings. It is relaxing. But I'm not really a "relaxing" guy. I also don't like fishing. I've never made money with mining. I keep trying it. Every time I see a video talking about how lucrative it is, or how some ship is the bestest miner ever, I think, "I'll give it another go". And I always end up wishing I'd just run some missions or hauled some gold.

Yeah I think mining is not for everyone. There are far more profitable activities in the game but I just enjoy the process

Keep in mind core mining is easier earlier in a playthrough due to not needing a big ship bc of price per unit

Exobiology with a single specie It's arround 20 millions / 10 or 15 min, not much other activities are so profitable in terms of efficiency. I tried core mining time ago, getting 25 m / hour aprox, relaxed but boring.

heck i got 22mil from 2 already discovered speices on an already visited and scanned planet so even if you barely trie it's still worth it.
