Note that WLED hosts its own web server on the chip itself, so the app is not even required. Just a web browser is enough.

With this set up you can control up to ~30 WS2812 LEDs at full brightness. You can also have multiple ESP32 controllers, all hooked up to the same WLED Phone APP instance that can work simultaneously. That way you can get multiple groups to work together. If you utilised a powerful external Power Supply to drive the LEDs you can power long strips of 300+ LEDs. WLED supports up to 1500 individual LEDs, getting power to all those nodes is the hard.

What do you do for strips of greater lengths where the current that can be delivered by the esp is a limiting factor or the required input voltage to the strip is 12v? Do I step down source voltage to the esp board to 3.3v, and run 12v to the LEDs, connecting the data pin to the esp still? Do I have to worry about bleed back into the esp, using a diode to ensure the pin is not at risk to be shorted?

@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, As a first note, the max current you want to be pulling through an ESP32 Development Board Chip like the one shown is ~1200mA. Each RGB LED draws approximately 50mA when it is set to full brightness and powered at 5V. That means for every 30 LEDs that you have your LED strip could be drawing as much as 1.5 Amps. Also for those curious, the max current out of a USB3.0 is 900mA. USB1.0 and USB2.0 deliver up to 500mA. That means, for peace of mind during testing, power the system via any USB as it will then not be possible to break the ESP32 by overloading it with the current.

Can this be used without the internet? I am trying to understand how to use a phone app to control some ESPs on a truck, mostly mobile IOT? Like battery monitoring, temps, etc, but also to control valves to inflate tires to needed pressures for specific duties. Driver accesses devices via smart phone or tablet.
@Core-Electronics

WLED works best when you have the internet as its much easier to customise. If it isn't connected to the internet the ESP32 does create a hotspot which you can then access using a phone to control the LEDs. To control/indicate all those different features potentially a Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer would be better for the task. Come hit up our forum and we'll best be able to make recommendations regarding your project for you - forum.core-electronics.com.au/ Also a completed project like this definitely belongs on our Projects page! core-electronics.com.au/projects/. @Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics 5 ай бұрын
You can add multiple ESP32s into the app and they will show up as separate WLED objects in the main menu of the app, from there you can select each ESP32 and change settings as you need. If you want them to synchronise, so that when one changes it updates all the others, you will need to set up one WLED controller as the "Main" controller and then set the other ESP32s to sync to the main board.

Hey mate, we have some great guides on how to deliver more current to your Addressable LEDs whilst safely powering a Micro-Controller via External power supplies. It is all about making sure that the system shares a common ground and that the ESP32 board is insulated from current peaks (via the logic level converter). Give these guides a look for an understanding on this - core-electronics.com.au/tutorials/ws2812-addressable-leds-particle-quickstart-guide.html and core-electronics.com.au/tutorials/WS2812_and_NeoPixel_with_Pycom.html There are always more than one way to do anything and I'd like to in the future create a definitive guide on powering Addressable LEDS with an external power-supply and specifically the ESP32 boards. Also I'd like to throw in Sound Reactivity to that guide as well for good measure 😊.

I have now my 2nd ESP32s nodemcu chip.... When I got the first I had problems "getting it to run" properly (without I knew in detail what the problem was).. It always ran like 10 minutes after it was turned on... Then came across a post somewhere suggesting to use thicker power cables for it.. Thought that was a good idea (instead of thin jumper cables I used år first) that seemed to solve it my first chip has run smoothly ever since... Now I have a new chip I ofc have soldered thicker cables onto it from start (same cables as first one)... But despite that my new chip is actually also acting funny... Gives me only some seconds of connection from Wled.. if at all... so that got me back to zero I have no idea why now doesn't seem logic... It can without a problem run on USB (also how I installed Wled) there it just can't control the led strip when on USB... the connection problem is related to when I run on 5v power supply but there when runs some seconds it can control the leds without a problem

Now its not my place to advise on Vehicle Modification here mainly in regards to safety (also in my country darn near any mod gets classed as a revenue boosting defect). Nevertheless Underglow Effects look awesome! If I was to do pursue this the most important thing to do is making sure every system gets the correct Voltages and Amps it requires safely. Buck/Boost converters are a great way of managing this and I talked about that in this guide - core-electronics.com.au/guides/prototyping/how-to-drive-high-power-leds/ Hope that helps and good luck to you!

Great video, thanks! Is it possible to connect these addressable strings in parallel, as you can with non-addressable RGBW led strips?
@drewnoakes
@drewnoakes Жыл бұрын
I think I found an answer to this. You can run the power in parallel, but not the data. It seems like each LED's address is really its distance from the controller, and each LED passes the message down the line, likely decrementing some counter such that when a unit receives a command with a zero count, it knows that data is for itself, but for counts higher than zero it passes the command after decrementing the count. With this design, running strips in parallel would mean each strip would be a mirror of each other strip. i.e. if you have two strips and send a command to the LED with ID 3, the fourth LED in both strips would respond. Does that match your understanding?

I used a Single 5V 4A supply for the large panel. Link to the exact one I used here - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/AM8911B And you can control heaps of ESP32 boards (I've had 5 connect all at the same time once, but I'm sure you could go much further) and you can control up to 10 separate LED strips from a single ESP32. So Much Power!
@MaxSMoke777
@MaxSMoke777 Жыл бұрын
You really shouldn't be hook up too many LED's to a single chip, you'll burn out the power system. What you need is a separate power system for the LED's and just wire the chip into the control pin. The ESP32 should never be too hot to touch.

You have a brilliant video which shows exactly what I want, however I have different LED strip and ESP32 board to you. My LED strip (RGB 5050 Colour Changing Tape) came with it's own controller which runs through my Android using 'Lotus Lantern' App, so I know the LEDs are working OK. Unfortunatly it hasd none of the functions do what I want, but your WLED project seems to. My problem with my LED strip is that it is labelled differently to yours, it is Black wire = +5v, Green wire = "G", Red wire = "R" and Blue wire = "B" so I am not sure how it matches your pin out (Black wire = Ground, Red wire = +5v and Green wire = Data) To make matters worse my ESP32 has different chipsets and numbering (it is a WEMOS LOLIN32 ESP32 Lite V1.0.0 Wifi Bluetooth Board CH340G). I installed the WLED web installer and can access the WLED from both my PC and Android, but so far I have not had a sigle LED light. Would you be able to help me with the pinouts please?

Heyya mate, as you've got WLED running on your ESP32 that is a really great sign. Inside the WLED settings (under LED & Hardware setup) you can select the type of LED strip you are using. I believe your working with a PWM RGB LED strip. This will also enable you to select what Pins to use. Then just match those Pin outs in the settings with your physical system. If you run into issues come write up a forum post and we'll get your system up an running proper 😊 forum.core-electronics.com.au/

@@Core-Electronics Hiya, Thanks for reply, it was very helpful. I have now found out that am indeed using an analog RGB LED strip rather than a digital LED strip. I had soldered the right pins but I hadn't known how to configure them at all. I've now set it as PWM RGB LED strip in the setup menu, and it has asked for GPIOs which I have set at 12, 13 and 14, so it now outputs some basic light. However, the effects are extremely limited (e.g. can get it to flash mildly) so I now either have to try and understand the ESP32 configuration better to alter the config (need online instruction manual), or I need to buy a digital LED strip where I ought to be able to run the desired effects more easily. Anyway, at least I am moving forward now and beginning to understand the difference between types of LED strip and how these things work (as a 70 year old I'm rather pleased that the old grey cells still work a little). Thanks once again for giving me a shove in the right direction. Kind regards. Alan

Will this work as a stand alone or Does this require external wifi to operate?
@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can. The catch is that you need to have WLED in AP mode and you need to join that WIFI network to communicate with it (the one that the ESP32 board is creating). This will mean that the phone or tablet you are using will be isolated from any other network you would usually be on. This does mean you can have full control of LEDs on your costumes/projects when your away from home, but the ESP32 will take up more energy doing it so make sure you have a big enough battery.

You will need to power the LED strip externally if you are powering more than ~30 LED nodes. If you are interested in powering a huge amount of LED Strips please note that there are some great standard practices (when powering hundreds or thousands of LEDs). Refer to this fantastic Adafruit guide on the topic if you are planning on powering significantly more LEDs than a single 5 Metre roll. learn.adafruit.com/1500-neopixel-led-curtain-with-raspberry-pi-fadecandy/power-topology

So this guide demonstrates WS2812B LEDs. Some 12Volt variants have 2 pins for data (WS2813). You would only need to connect to 1 of the data pins and ensure that correct voltages were being sent through it (logic/data Voltage is 5V in that case).
