Maguffin blood aside, the Adam Monroe character was what made season 2 for me. In season 1, Sylar was built up as the ultimate bad guy that only Peter could go toe to toe with. In season 2, they brought in the nemeses for Hiro. What is the perfect foil for a time traveler? An immortal! To me that was pure genious. No matter what time Hiro travels to, Adam will be waiting for him. Plus the actor manages to do a fabulous job making him charming and almost sympathetic. There is a great chemestry between him and Hiro when they are on screen together. He was the best part of the season. Monica was entertaining, but Adam was brilliant!

The odd thing is, they had a chance to rectify this one in season 3 with the stupid Arthur Petrelli stuff. (Sidenote: shocker, yet another not-actually-dead-when-killed-off character) Maury is working with Arthur, yet I don't think Arthur chasing/posing a threat to Molly is even brought up, let alone one of the major plots of the season that it probably should have logically been. Had they made Arthur obsessed with Molly, then Maury could have spent good time threatening her and have that Season 1 tease truly pay off That said, the fact that Maury can not only communicate back, but even affect her when she uses her power to locate him ...well, that is probably the most terrifying thing she ever experienced, regardless if it was ever paid off more. Because of that, her Season 1 statement about Maury does still hold very accurate as far as what a child would think - just quite disappointing

@@CoreIdeas True, hindsight is an amazing tool for 'fixing' storytelling, and we have like 12 years of hindsight on this. However I do feel like for years I've felt this season felt hella funky, as much as I enjoyed the Takezo Kensei thread. I feel like most of your suggestions lean towards an understanding of story that would have fit right in with writing this show. Maybe coming up with the initial idea isn't where you're at right now, but like, someone supposedly named Homer came up with the idea for Odysseus and oral tradition lead to a bunch of people adding episodes to the series run. The blind trust Peter had for Adam seriously killed season two for me. I absolutely loved the concept of Adam as a villian, but he only got as far as he did by manipulating Peter in a way that would have crumbled the moment Hiro showed up. Like in season 1 when Peter reads Nathan's mind because Claire was expressing doubts. The death of the doctor and Hiro showing up would have been enough for Peter to doubt Adam. If they really wanted to get him to that point they'd have to give us a lot more of Adam and Peter's jail time. Have Adam and Peter banter in prison, Peter likes Adam but he doesn't trust himself out in the real world so he's not convinced they should escape, over time though he starts to doubt the possibility of a cure through Adam's mini comments, but what really flips the switch is when Elle lay's out her life of basically being trapped there.

The timing of this video...My best friend and I (who met through our mutual interest in Heroes way back in 2007) just started rewatching the show together. It still amazes me how GOOD the majority of season one was. Even some of the filler was a lot of fun, like Hiro’s casino storyline, because it got to show off the powers and how the characters were exploring them. But we find ourselves remembering some of the ridiculous shit that happens in later seasons and going "did that actually happen?" It really is a shame what happened to this show, and it’s a shame that they couldn’t let characters go more easily. I loved the season one characters, but I think letting them go as initially planned would have been the saving grace of the show.
@CoreIdeas5 жыл бұрын
Season 3, IMO, is where the show starts going absolutely bat-shit insane. At least the Villains arc; the Fugitives arc is actually fairly solid for a good portion until it starts getting dumb again.

@@CoreIdeas Based on what I remember, I agree. Everything that makes us scratch our heads seems to be from season three. We’re rewatching season two now and it’s genuinely not awful. It’s poorly paced, like you mentioned, but there’s some good ideas there and it manages to keep itself mostly on the rails. I would have loved to see that original ending play out. Introducing the blood transfusion thing was a horrible misstep, though.
@caldw6155 жыл бұрын
I'm glad I stumbled across these videos after I introduced this show to my GF and we're about to start Season 3. One thing we found very frustrating in Season 2 was how out of character Peter acted. Peter in Season 1 was genuinely someone who's heart was in the right place and wanted to do what he could to help others, but he wasn't stupid. Season 2 Peter after he regains his memories is just needlessly stupid with regards to him ignoring that he can read minds. He spends the last few episodes having multiple characters, both newly met and old ones he already knows, approach him and tell him Adam is lying and planning a pandemic, yet he never once thinks to try reading Adam's mind to check if everything is in order. Season 1 Peter would have been cautious enough to head other people's warnings and maybe check, not wait until after he has Hiro attempt to timestop kill Adam, after he has a telepathic mind battle with Matt (the important power here) AND have his brother tell him also that Adam is lying. Like I get that Peter is maybe trying to be respectful to Adam since he trusted him but when this many warning signs are approaching him and he never even tries to listen it just gets infuriating and makes anyone who liked him before despise him near the end. I do like your non-aging immortality idea for Adam as a way to still have his story play out but without breaking the narrative with how regenerative powers work. It's a shame we never really got to see how the show could have planned out had Season 2 not been cut so short.

alright, now having watched the video and understanding what that artwork was about ... nice. adam is actually one of my favourite characters in heroes, although less for what was done with him and more for what his concept really could have been, if he hadn't been squandered as a villain in volume three. I personally never really saw a problem with healing = immortality, because it seemed like a reasonable next step for that kind of power, and I think that would've been interesting to explore down the line (like would peter and claire similarly get corrupted the way adam was, over the years?) but you bring up a fantastic point about the healing (which ... as you said, pretty much killed any sense of consequence in the show) and I think your concept of adam's immortality NOT being healing would have been absolutely kick-ass. that would have been amazingly disturbing and visually striking. a highly lost opportunity and something I never had thought of myself before but now would love to see in fanfic or something, because damn. well done. in addition to your points I also think season two suffers a lot from Spot The Love Interest, where characters obviously introduced to be love interests (west/yaeko/peter's irish chick I can't even remember the name of/ultimately maya, with her storyline cut) have very little other personality or goal, and so what's the point in caring about them? heroes s1 had no romance other than the already established ones (save niki's and nathan's fling, but that wasn't actually about that) and s2 felt like a rushed way of trying to amend that, even though I feel like exactly no one missed that romance in s1. romance is fine, but it should come up organically through characters that have chemistry, not just be forced upon is. I feel like that was another reason everything dragged - we felt trapped with characters we had no real reason to care about other than superficially. very interested to hear what you have to say about season three. volume three is my least favourite because character assassinations abound all throughout the cast and plot holes were just all over the place, but I think volume four is actually a surprisingly strong story that felt very cohesive, coming after the disaster that was volume three and the meandering that was season two. great work, and looking forward to more!
@sobr49865 жыл бұрын
The forced in love interest in Ireland was Caitlan, I believe? ...which I've now watched all of season 3 though, and I'm left thinking we never had any type of conclusion to her situation, did we? Peter seemingly just up and forgot all about poor Caitlan being trapped in the future I do think you're forgetting a bit about Season 1 love interests though - Nathan is married but we find out about two of his affairs (Nikki and Clair's mom, Meredith) Hiro meets and falls in love with Charlie, we get a love triangle between Peter, Isaac and Simone, we have the relationship with Nikki and DL which is complicated by Ando's love for her, we are left wondering about the Matt and Janice relationship and if there will be something with Audry, we have the faked relationship between Claire and Zach, etc ...not quite the introduce characters just to be love interests thing of season 2, but it's the beginning of the series and their relationship status was already being set up as a major focus of the show. With most all of those falling apart in season 1, it's logical most would be replaced with new love interests instead since relationship drama was clearly shown so important from the start

Cool vid and some interesting ideas you had, without sacrificing much of the story. I feel they could have also shortened the Hiro in feudal Japan story as it dragged and felt at odds with what was happening in present day. I could be wrong but I'm sure Kring even said something along those lines.

How funny this video was recommended to me! I was just watching the show recently (attempting to, at least.) Back in the day I had seen most of season 1 but missed a few episodes late so I stopped even trying. I had planned on grabbing it on DVD and eventually catching up, but never got around to it (helped by friends/word of mouth telling me not to bother, lol.) Then a couple months ago I saw the entire series is available on Freedive and decided I should finally get around to seeing all this, only a decade or so later than initially anticipated. So I went into watching the show unbelievably fresh, with only a vague memory of the first half of season 1 and a knowledge that friends/others didn't care for later seasons very much - and I can say from this recent personal experience of basically first-time watching everything (up to so far S02E10,) man is season 2 ever difficult to get through. Some decisions in season 1 bothered me a bit but oh well, I was getting attached to the characters I did like. Then the conclusion of season 1 was really, really weak, as you pointed out, but okay, it's the character arcs that are most important in a long running series. Season 2 instantly left a *very* bad taste in my mouth though when I learned no one even died in said weak season 1 finale. Sylar and Peter surviving is especially stupid because it leaves you feeling as if the entire season was for nothing at all, we might be in this *exact* same "one of them might blow up a city" boat at the end of season 2! And like at least I assumed DL was the one unlucky soul to actually bite the dust in NY (despite being the one with the least threatening injuries,) but nope, come to eventually find out, he too survived!! So many episodes into season 2 finally finding this stupid crap out, in that extremely dumb and pointless side-story, plus the modern day reemergence of "Adam" were tough to swallow. And I am beyond fed up with the always seemingly going-absolutely-nowhere stories centering around people like Maya and Monica. But the Noah "death" is what has left me having still not bothering to even watch the final episode of season 2 yet, about 2 weeks after I last watched a couple. Now hearing you tell me it is *after* season 2 where things really go off the rails, meaning this isn't even the bad part yet … sigh BTW, and maybe I just missed it, but did they ever explain why Nathan isn't a Congressman in season 2? His election was such an important part of season 1, and yet it seems to have been completely forgotten in season 2?! I barely even have a vague understanding of why he isn't with his wife anymore, and knowing I have just 1 episode left in season 2 before the spoiler in this video showing his (I hope, permanent) death, I am guessing I will never really know what transpired ...which is absolutely asinine considering how much time they spent setting up nonsense backstory to characters that are of no importance to anything. (of course, I doubt Nathan will stay dead anyway seeing as Peter went through so much trouble to save him the first time he should have been dead, and he now knows how to easily cure him - Peters own blood, since Peter has spent so much time with Adam at this point) Anyway, sucks knowing the way too over powered Peter is apparently going to survive to season 3 - that means at least another season of trying to keep tabs on all the powers he's obtained but will probably never/rarely ever use. Hoping the same isn't true of Sylar, and that pointless and boring character we spend way too much time on finally bites the dust, but I sadly doubt we will be so lucky there either. Still planning on sticking this show out till the end, but shocked and kind of bummed this show only had one season of being even halfway good before it started becoming a disaster. Had great potential
@sobr49865 жыл бұрын
Not surprisingly, I was right - not with the how, but Nathan is still alive none the less. Then in a desperate attempt to make Monica more than completely pointless, her arc kills Nikki ...only for us to get New Nikki! - yay :/ And of course they had to force a reason for Maya's being, so Mohinder was turned into Goldblum's Fly! - yay :/ But wait, there's more! ...Linderman is back because yeah, of course he is! - yay :/ And that's merely scratching the surface of the stupidity going on. Wow, was everyone ever right about this show, sadly... :(

The problem with Season 2 and why it felt slow, etc., was because, as they said, they assumed fans wanted tension and buildup as characters discovered powers/new powers. But while pursuing that goal, they made some critical errors: * Peter Petrelli: His whole character development was centered around powers as a metaphor; as he grew as a character, he grew in use of his powers. As he approached Superman status, writers didn't know what to do with him, so they constantly depowered him, eventually erasing his powers entirely. I remember feeling like everything slowed down because he was suddenly starting over from square one, again and again. The Haitian is blocking him, the pills are blocking him, then his father erased his powers. His whole arc changed as a result. It felt like it stalled out. * Separating Hiro in time the way they did, made things feel slow. They could have had him experience all that stuff in flashbacks while Future Hiro is looking for Adam in the present time. Instead, he was stuck in the past, on what amounted to many episodes of a side quest that showrunners took too long to tie into the main group again. They focused more on signs of what Adam's machinations while Hiro pursued him in the present day, while cutting back to flashbacks like Lost. * They separated everyone after NYC, really. The problem with the way they came together is that they had no reason to stay together after that. So everything was scattered. * They handled the future virus thing disasterously, which invalidated all the episodes related to that. NO resolution to the virus or the Caitlyn stranded in the past. *Fans didn't want adrenaline. They wanted writers that a multi-season arc plan instead of writers that unintentionally undid the narratives of previous seasons.* They wanted narrative momentum that didn't stop because writers thought they had to start over with tension and the like. An anthology was unnecessary.

There is what I think about each season; 1- the most atmospheric (Perhaps the most nostalgic for all of us as well. Fist feelings. First sight. First emotions! Very grounded. ) 2- the shortest (More like the 1 season, but much shorter, and and quite possible pretty nostalgic too.) 3- the darkest ( Very villainous, and terrifying in some ways. The longest as well. It kinda betrays the 1 season by "not saving the cheerleader anymore," and killing of Nathan. Where is the healing or time travel to safe Nathan? Has my favorite character- the future Peter ) 4- the most distant ( Kinda sets apart all the characters mostly from their past lives. We get a different look at things. 5- the most different ( Very few original characters are present. Different villain. Different powers. Different, and super mysterious ending.

When I first watched Heroes, I wasn't one who really noticed plotholes or inconsistencies, but I remember the episode where Nathan was being killed off and I literally screamed at the screen "CLAIRE IS RIGHT OUTSIDE YOU DUMBSH**S! USE HER BLOOD!" It wasn't till later I was brought in the know about the behind the scenes drama unfolding but it still didn't make any sense form a narrative standpoint because at least two characters knew about Claire's healing blood in that scene, probably more but my memory is fuzzy on that, and no one thought to bring her in for an impromptu blood transfusion. The healing factor was incredibly over powered for what they had to work with since she could literally cure cancer but "No, gotta keep her hidden."

7:37, yeah, personally I wasn't entirely convinced that what killed him. Considering that Matt parkman took several bullets and was unconscious by the season finale yet survived, and yet dl just took the one and was conscious
@sayitsayuri89514 жыл бұрын
the difference in Matt's case was the speed and force of the bullets, Sylar should learn not to multi-task. HOWEVER Sylar himself should have died about three times over in season one, the first of which being when Peter tackled him off that roof.... or maybe when Parkman shot at him, depending.
@Anonomius04 жыл бұрын
@@sayitsayuri8951 see, I just kinda assumed that Sylar already had some regenerative ability, hence how he survived getting shot twice (separate occaisions) as well as falling off the building, so I didn't understand why him taking Claire's ability was so important
@sayitsayuri89514 жыл бұрын
@@Anonomius0 Nah, the show established he didn't have healing abilities or any form of invulnerability. The scenes where he almost died in the first season (except when Hero stabs him) are so muddy that you could try and explain it away. Maybe he used telekinesis to stop Parkman's bullets. Maybe he fell on top of peter, somewhat cushioning his fall....
@Anonomius04 жыл бұрын
@@sayitsayuri8951 Or maybe they were so muddy that before future hiro explained that whole ability thing it was easy to assume that he had some regenerative ability and when Hiro explains that he took claire's ability you're like 'what the heck, he already had a regenerative ability!'

I think they should have had nathan survive the same way, fall and stop hovering over the water, New York notices the giant fucking fireball in the skies. Some pilots and passangers near the event go blind due to the flash of light. The power gets knocked out in parts of the city, at least one plane has crashes and a few others have to make emergency landings. Peter wakes up with new powers the same way but it's in episode five. Nathan talks to the authorities but dispite the cast beating the bad guy missis Petrelly faints ignorance and Lindermans body is gone. Keep the Adam arc but have him burn himself alive after Peters Dad shows up and temporerally steals his powers aging him over the cource of 3 episodes. Adam burns himself to bring himself back and then uses that to show up at a press event later in the season and go phoenix to reveal his mesiah complex to the world. Adam invents a vast story for the press telling of many immortals roaming the planet most of them wanting to be left alone, but one man having aquired the ability to manipulate minds. Two powers. Peter doesnt trust him but because the government thinks Nathan was being brainwashed and they are trying to create a magneto helmet he lets Adam do his thing. Adam keeps the ruse up for two seasons untill he finally reveals his intentions to a grupe of people who are going to die. Mohinder talks to a phoesisist and they learn of a quantum element to biology. An alement that the government wants to exploit with a supersoldier program. The revelation spawns a wide vuriety of supersoldier programs and Adams healing powers are exploited on a world stage. Adam and Linderman have the same power and so does Claire, Adam uses it to basically become a bit of an international Jesus Christ while Claire lingers in blackops bases and gets tested. Claire runs off when she learns that she can resurect the dead, Adam warns that if she tries to use this power on people who have been dead for over a decade it tends to turn them in to Zombies. The blood resurects them but it makes it harder for them to remember their past and they start ageing quickly, He makes an "Apples of Idunn" refrence where new blood has to continually be added to keep the people young, they go freeze or burn their old skin off and the more they do this the less they remember of their old life. They change in their new life, becoming eider wiser, more violent if it's been a long time or stupider. Adam talks of a woman he resurected once who bore him children for twenty pluss years but with each burning she drifted away from him. Adams children were all over the place in powers but some remained immortal. So now Adams children come to meet out vengence. Adam reveals that he was planning to kill a giant part of the world so that he can rule it as it's new mesiah and make himself an army of gods, and he did it all for them they shaw see. As for the tripplet the second personality is revealed to be an actual sister as her husband is alive and they are held on base for observation. A third sister is introduced but shes more on the side of the military and used to oversee a team of supersoldiers. Hero meanwhile is hanging with Peter as they look around for clues of the organisation. Veriouse other teams are introduced one by one looking to get as much information as they can on the same things, some corrupting the supersoldier program some serching for a way to make their loved ones special. Keeping people relatively close with the hatian and Parkman working as a team raising Molly and Claire alongside the others. Syler on the other hand seems to be lerking around and killing people but when Peter is about to catch him he finds that it's not Syler, he's found a way to turn other in to his soldiers giving them telekinetic and other abilities. This only ferthers the idea that Syler is manipulating people and making them do things. Now that would make a good show!

11:36-12:07 I honestly don't agree with you about how Hiro should be reminded of his so-called wrongdoing by having Adam Monroe be covered with scars from his betrayal. And although I only watched the first half of season 2, I see that Hiro had given Adam MANY chances to step up and become a hero only to remain lazy and drunken. The only time he ever really stepped up was after he retrieved the fire scroll from the 90 angry Ronin and that's when Adam, Yaeko and Hiro set out to rescue the swordsmith. Hiro only disguised himself as Takezo Kensei to protect Yaeko from bandits on her way to save her father. With both Hiro and Yaeko having a common goal, it's easy to see why they both fell in love and by the end of the arc it's implied that Hiro is Takezo Kensei from the tales not Adam. He (Adam) didn't deserve to be called a hero nor deserved Yaeko if he wasn't going to step up to the plate. I also believe Yaeko and Hiro made a much better couple than she did with Adam even if it was for a short time. Quite honestly, I would have written a fanfiction about Hiro encountering a reincarnation of Yaeko and then finding a way that they could be together.
