Worst was the 4 season, where a villian is introduced out of no where and everyone is ready to save the world from him. 3 biggest individual mistakes, giving non powered people powers with a serum...thereby taking away actual mutants special meaning and uniqueness, 2. taking peters powers never returning them and dumbing them down to one power at a time from there on forward, and 3. killing off wayyyyyy to many charatcers to make caring about them difficult. Season 1 4.5 out of 5 stars, season 2 3.5 out of 5,season 3 2.5 stars, season 4 2 stars.

Actually, taking away empathic mimicry from Peter and letting him develop ability replication was a good choice and a common sense one. Many bad writing decisions and bad character arcs happened because Peter's unlimited skills put the writers' backs against the wall. Gaining intuitive learning from Sylar and then going into a sort of villain spree (after ruining a couple of futures and trying to fix them) made a huge point against returning them...specially as the "multiple power road" seemed to make him more intelectually stupid every day. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. Second, I don't believe every non-powered person can become evolved if they don't have the proper gene in their DNAs. Evidence to that is that Peter's ability replication is a variation of Arthur Petrelli's power that only manifested after the serum, the same way that happened with Tracy, Niki, Nathan and Mohinder (all of them have family predisposition that we know of). In Heroes Reborn, one of Claire's kids has the exact same ability than Arthur and Peter, suggesting genes play a part on it. Last, IMHO bringing characters back from death is a bigger problem with the show than killing the characters that shouldn't have been made regulars in the first place.

@@romicor9 No, it wasn't, it was a stupid idea to take away his powers and replace them with one power at a time. Also In the future, he was killed by Claire even though the Haitus was nowhere near him and he had picked up so many powers, it was literally a god. You think with all that power he will be able to sense Claire all at least heal a lot faster from bullets. He placed Peter his younger self in another vessel and gave him control of that vessel. Another stupid thing was making Peter evil after taking Sylar's powers, Using Claire's blood to heal someone after there are dead. I mean if the person is dead how do even pump blood into his body, there is no heartbeat but not using to heal original Nathan. Yeah, the writers had difficulty coming up with threats but all you do is to create a villain who stronger than Peter and empathic mimicry does work. Superman one million has the power to block other people from mimicry his powers. Peter was able to take Sylar's powers until he allowed it.

@@romicor9 The fact that Nathan up and ignores the fact he used to have a wife & kids he now has zero interest in as of mid-season 2 is something I couldn't help think about the rest of the show. It is a major issue that helps destroy the character (as well as his mother & brother, who similarly just ignore their grandkids/nephews exist) ...not even when "Nathan" was running around touching objects and regaining old memories did "where are my wife and kids" ever come up. That's a joke Another issue is, everything we know about powers indicates those children have them as well; yet apparently no one anywhere cares. This issue is highlighted when Matt's son uses his powers at a very young age, yet no one is concerned that Nathan's kids would be doing the same?

Peter's powers could've easily been nerfed without having to actually take away his original power. It's rather simple. Since Peter's power is literally called "empathic mimicry", it would stand to reason that he instinctively absorbs other people's abilities into his body, but he can only call upon powers of people that he has strong feelings for. Another nerf is that he doesn't have their powers working all the time. For example, Claire's power of healing is ALWAYS on, whereas for Peter it would have to be something he calls upon. Or another thing would be that he can only absorb powers of people he has strong feelings for, rather than just anybody around him.

To be fair, even at its worst, it still was better than most superhero/other shows now at its best. On TV, that is. That being said: - Claire's blood can bring people back from the dead so the Nathan dying problem in Season 3-4 didn't have to happen. - Too many 'heroes' was exactly a problem though at least having Sylar kill them is more believable. As long as they just limit how much Sylar has to kill them because they could always just do those episodic 'evos' which only exist in one episode to be Sylar'd - Season 1 was epic and Season 2 should have rather focused more on the corruption of the Company (which they attempted) rather than the virus or Sylar again. Having Sylar appear around Season 3 or 4 would have kept it more engaging. - I feel sorry for Peter. He wanted to be special and save the world so many times but he's basically a huge part of the problems in the early parts of Heroes. He was a bomb. Got Simone killed. Became Sylar. Helped to unleash a virus, nearly. Became amnesiac and got people killed. Became a 'criminal.' Just oof. Things probably would have been better if he didn't discover he could fly. And he became so serious and like Batman later on in the seasons, like I never seen him smile there compared to Season 1. That's not a problem it's just me feeling sorry for him. - Claire confuses me. - Everyone forgot about Lyle. - I feel sorry for Micah too. - Mohinder has an obsession with these things. Cool, that's good. But don't monsterise him

What got me was that after Nathan was shot by Peter at the end of season 2, he is revived by Linderman (who was killed in S1) and Nathan is the only one who can see him. It is later revealed that Parkman's dad was showing him images of Linderman... so that means that Linderman was never there and there's no way that Nathan could have been revived in the first place. Not to mention, he died at the end of EVERY season.

Volume 5 had a bit more of personal stories. Yes, exactly! I just pointed out on the old Jump The Shark review that the real Jump The Shark moment came in the Season 1 finale, when they changed the plan from the mega-budget blockbuster type ending to *no one dying* Almost all the problems came from characters having their arc changed from that planned death to ever ongoing, and the forced ways to try and have that happen ...case in point, the Adam's blood issue was almost certainly only added to correct the fact Nathan needed to continue as a star of the show, but logically couldn't survive without at least the severe burns they gave him ...or Hero randomly all of a sudden needing a sword and going back in time to give him something to do while keeping his powers out of play for the plot lines ...or Peter needing to have amnesia, and therefore lack of memory/control of his laundry bag of powers (but not surprisingly, there is one massive exception to that - a power that he doesn't have control over, but is conveniently never brought up again. That is...) Think about the consequences of having Sylar and Peter survive the Season 1 ending - they are both still a continuing threat to blow up a major city (or worse, the world) and *no one* ever brings it up again; we are led to just forget it because the show wanted to ignore the power was ever introduced. So for the next 3 seasons we have two emotionally unstable guys with the power of an a-bomb they can barely control running around the world, and no one anywhere ever even bats an eye. Why didn't Peter blow when he awoke, in a panic, in Ireland? Why didn't Sylar blow after being stabbed in NY? Why didn't "Nathan" blow when he started redeveloping Sylar's powers, powers he is shown to have no real control of? As soon as they changed to have everyone survive, massive plot holes were created which (through contrived explanations, retconning and ignoring) continued to ruin the show up until it's end.

Great review man. I just finished the show. my rankings of the 5 volumes. 1. s01(Genesis), 2. s03a(Villains). s03b(Fugitives). s04(Redemption). and last is s02(Generations). When I first watched s01, the 2 key ingredients that made it successful were: 1) The mystery element. The whole mystery of who or how new york blows up and hows isaac's paintings affect the future of our characters was so intriguing. It was always gonna make viewers glued to their tvs. Although s3 part 1 did try to maintain the mystery with Arthur Petrelli/the company , the mystery was no longer impactful. 2)The second element was chemistry of the characters working together. When you introduce a show with a unique set of characters, its vital that these characters spent time together just like how LOST did. After s1 we rarely saw that. There should have focused more on friendships between hiro-claire or peter-claire or hiro-nathan or matt-noah or even mohinder-nathan. At the start of later season each of these characters would start where they left off and it was annoying. Other big blunders: One of the biggest blunders was making peter claire's uncle. In a show like this you should have a main couple. peter and claire were perfect. what was the point of making nathan claire father? they hardly developed that relationship. Making sylar take claire;s power ruined the series as there was no way to kill him. Tension is gone. So neither the villain nor the hero could die. Sylar was ultra OP and should have not stayed beyond season Taking away peters and hiro;s powers was also dumb. Like you already made a blunder by making the villain op. so now you take away the powers 2 heroes that can actually stop him?

Peter losing his main ability still keeps me up at night. They could have had Arthur take it and then when he died, the light from his body should have gone to Peter and gave him his abilities back. I mean yes he was OP but so was Sylar having them both was part of what made it all interesting and exciting. A lot of things could have been better.

Not only the producers/writers weren't invested, but Milo Ventimiglia seemed to be not that invested either. There were some disappointing performances that left me thinking "WTF Milo, you can do better than that bored face", and badass special effects didn't compensate for that. Other scenes were better, specially in Volume 5. He had acting ups and downs...after the show ended, he considered to quit his acting career and taking a sabbatical in a foreign country. I wonder if other members of the main cast felt that the show took its toll on them too.

In his own words (from the interview he gave to CBR.com in Oct 2010): "I remember during the first season, we were sitting at an Emmy panel, and there was a whole bunch of us on stage. Somebody asked us about catching this lightning in a bottle and how exciting it was, and I was the only person who raised my hand and said, 'Look, the reality is the show will get canceled.' Everybody was looking at me cross-eyed, like, 'You’re crazy! Don’t say it!'. But that’s reality".

my biggest issue was introducing characters that had no reason to be a part of the plot. they at least tried with micah's family being important, but aside from that, ellie and the deaf chick who can see sound/weaponize are the only new cast members who got to do anything effectively. sure the main big bad of season 2 is there, but then season 3 happens. i didn't care for copycat, i didn't care for micah's family, didn't care about budget aquaman or black hole dude. they added to many characters that adds nothing to the main plot and only serve as development for the core cast. which is sad honestly

I've been going back to the beloved first season for the first time in many years, and I honestly believe it still holds up incredibly well! If you leave Heroes as that first season, it's pretty solid and allows it to end with you thinking of "what if" scenarios as to where it COULD have gone, whilst still having fulfilled its narrative purpose as a mini series. It's much better this way at least! I don't quite get the "dated" argument though, as I've seen it mentioned a few times by a bunch of people, but they never specify. I mean for one, the majority of scenes and even set pieces are filmed practically with very minimal CGI. Even then, it's serviceable CGI at that, for the most part! I'd argue it still looks and feels very believable... The issues I have with the series mainly come down to its structure. The writers clearly favoured certain characters over others, and even give the majority of screen time to the most boring and two dimensional character with Niki. The series also pushes the whole "everything AND everybody is connected" thing a bit too far at times... And of course, does enjoy introducing cool questions without ever really exploring them that well (if at all). Other than that though: great characters that really can compete with the greats in my opinion, memorable themes throughout, and really captures a sensational amount of feelings into its first season that rival the majority of the superhero stuff today!

I love heroes as well as heroes reborn. Having said that, there's only 1 major issue that I believe hurt the show and I'm sure others would agree with me. The show never had only 1 plot, at least until season 4, it also had several subplots/futures. As an example, season 1, New York exploding was the major plot but then, syler became president, disguised as Nathan. All those tiny plots continued to exist throughout the seasons and they were heading toward that...until season 4 completely undid all of that and focused solely on 1 plot only and they did that all within 1 episode, after 3 season's worth of work to set things up like they had. It was a tragedy that they did that and also a lil disappointing that heroes reborn only had 1 plot with no sub plot.

Just rewatched S1... anyone who blames the writer's strike (during S2) for the show's failure is fooling themselves. The show had major problems right from the beginning. Poor pacing, rehashed narratives, and numerous inconsistancies abound. The show had an interesting premise and some really good acting, but the overall execution was awful. It just got worse in subsequent seasons.

What went wrong......in season 2 they neutered Sylar and in the 4th season the did the same to Peter. Doing this is akin to ripping superman of his powers in the first 5 mins of a movie and him getting them back in the last 5 mins, then wondering why ur 3hr movie didn't do well. Season 1 was amazing and season 3 was a marked step up from season 2...... shame!

I've always been pissed they left Peter's girlfriend in the future where she was left to survive in a place she didn't know and was held prisoner. That and Claire's boyfriend had her father's power, lame. Peter's dad took his powers away. Peter was the most badass character and they neutered him. It should've ended with the first season because the writers strike killed it.

I still wanna say the first two seasons I truly loved. Even though season 2 was never intended to continue their stories, I felt like from season 1 to season 2 they did a really good job at pulling the characters into a believable direction. Though it definitely wasn't perfect, especially for DL and Nikki. However season 3 onward they dropped the ball. It wasn't good. I didn't really love anything they tried from there onward. Some things were okay, but nothing was good enough to match the first two seasons.
