Corey's vocal style is different than Layne's, so of course it's not gonna sound the same. The fact that Corey was able to hit the notes is impressive, and Man in the Box is not an easy song to sing anyways, so props to Corey for giving it a shot.

Layne can sing Slipknot songs, but corey can't sing alice in chains songs in the same key, Layne used to be in a hair metal band in the 80s where he did high pitch screams like metal singers do (Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson etc) but Mike Patton beats them both in terms of vocal range and versatility.

Something else I feel most people don't account for is that Layne sang this when he was in his early to mid 20s. Corey's in his late 40s and has 2 decades of tons of touring behind him... We have no idea how well Layne would be singing this track in his mid to late 40s. I think it's fair to Corey some slack. I'm sure if he was in a controlled environment and was around Layne's age, he would've performed it much better.

While I understand that Layne had an exceptional voice, I don’t understand all the hype and people saying that it’s so difficult. No disrespect but this video and it’s host are often saying that it’s near impossible. I’ve sung this song many, many times. In fact I just performed it a few minutes ago. It’s honestly never been difficult for me. When I sing it I usually tune down a half step to accompany my vocals on guitar, but I have sung it in E standard before. Which would be higher than Layne sang it. It’s just more vocal work than necessary. Am I a freak of nature ? I don’t think so. I think I’m just a first tenor. It just takes a certain type of voice, and the right amount of vocal compression. No mixed voice for this song. I personally don’t think it would sound right.

Corey sounded like he was singing from his throat. It has that stangled quality. But, it could've also been bad monitors and he couldn't hear himself and just didn't have the muscle memory to get through it without sounding strained.

Only person that remotely could live up to Layne's vocals on this was Chester Bennington, he nailed it, he was just a different breed, screams like the devil but sang like an Angel. From singing songs from Pantera, Nine Inch Nails GunsNRoses, STP, to Adele, Jeff Buckleys Hallelujah (absolutely blown away by that performance) to Oasis - Wonderwall and Yesterday by Paul McCartney

Corey Taylor is a great singer in his own right, anything that is Alice In Chains or Soundgarden is going to be out of most singer’s wheel house. Chris Cornell and Layne Staley were amazing generational talent. I pray those two never are forgotten.

To be fair, Corey’s scream in that clip was because he trashed his voice after the first two albums and he was trying something different back then. Not sure if he can do it nowadays 20 years later. Also, listen to Stone Sour demo 1994 when Corey was only 21. Back then he could ABSOLUTELY sing those notes. But years of smoking and screaming(a lot of them with unhealthy technique) has changed his voice.

There are videos on youtube, I think it was a Brazil show, where Layne was struggling to sing this. It's hard no question. I think Corey did great. He sounded like Corey Taylor which is fine for me. He loves AIC just like I do. That's all I need.
