Yeah but he's obviously been heavily influenced by the nu metal scene, atleast on their most defining works. So it would be better to admit they borrowed elements of Korn and Deftones which makes them kind of nu metal. Instead of admitting them as influences but also denying being nu metal. I think alternative metal is a better name, but nu metal really is it's own thing, and it's annoying acting like it's their genre, when they had such heavy Korn influence

Nobody cares about what I think, but I heard these dudes in '99 and they were a breath of fresh air to me. Slipknot was doing actual "metal" when boring bands like Papa Roach and Limp Bizkit were the bands on the top doing that boring mid-tempo shit. These guys were crushing it and nobody could touch them!

Still they r nu-metal but they don't want to be labeled like that today because nu-metal is the sound of middle 90's and middle 2000's today this music doesn't exist. Even KoRn and Deftones doesn't sound and play nu-metal. Soulfly aren't to and many, many more. There was a nu metal era. Todays is just a past. Even Machine Head was. MudVayne, Limb Bizkit, Coal Chamber, fuck a tons of bands !!!

I considered more Slipknot as a Alternative Metal Band than a Nu Metal: Their first album was the only disc 100% Nu Metal because they uses a lot of elements rap/hip hop with influence of other Metal bands. In Iowa they went a bit to the Alternative Metal with Death/Thrash/Groove Metal influence, also they still with the Nu Metal vibe. In Subliminal verses it was when they get more away from Nu Metal. SV is really a Alternative Metal disc with obviously the Nu Metal and Heavy Metal vibe All Hope is Gone is the least Nu Metal and more experimental disc of Slipknot. They went to a Thrash Metal direction with songs like Gematria,All Hope is Gone,This Cold Black,etc. And with Doom in songs like Gehenna. Also Hard Rock with Dead Memories. In Gray Chapter Slipknot still with Alternative,with Thrash and Nu vibe. This was the first album without Joey and Paul , giving that sad and melancholic feeling to it. And In Wanyk they try more with electronic elements, making in it a Industrial Metal vibe. Obviously, they never abandoned the Nu Metal feeling but Slipknot nowadays it’s a Alternative Metal band, But ITS MY OPINION SO..

I agree with you. I think a lot of bands find what "works" and they just basically remake what works over and over just adhering to current trends. I've always appreciated Slipknot because they have such emotion in their music. And to me I am translating that from the different "genres" I guess within the song. I feel like on most Slipknot albums there is "something for everyone" on it. With that being said, Slipknot is most definitely on the "harder" side of the type of music I like. So, I may be kind of speaking out of turn. 🤷‍♀️

I do to a point. If I hear something is categorized under a label I traditionally don't enjoy, I know to go in with low expectations. On the other hand, if something is labeled as something I am a fanatic about, I'll be more enthusiastic to check it out and likely to love it!

It depends on the person and theyre reasoning. If I'm looking for a band with a sound, it's easier to say what I want. If I want something heavy, angry, but slow, and no growls, then someone can recommend me some stoner doom metal. Now to some, that sounds rediculous. But I've been listening to metal for a long time now. So when I'm talking to people about it, it helps to differentiate death metal from doom metal from black metal. They know enough, and I know enough, to be able to tell the difference. But then I got really into doom metal. Now I can tell the difference in the styles of that. I can tell the difference about stoner, sludge, funeral, and just straight up doom metal. So when I'm talking to people who also know about doom metal, it helps to be able to clarify them. I don't havs to go into a long tirade about every aspect of their music so people can grasp what a band sounds like. I can just give a general genre, or even a more in depth one, and although they won't know specifically how that band sounds down to the finite details, they can get a good grasp of what they would expect.

I know its Korn as soon as I hear their signature bass guitar. And those are "Nu Metal" bands. Actually, sometimes I confuse new Slipknot songs with Stone Sour and vise versa.

I'm a metal elitist. And I agree with you. Nu Metal is part of metal. I disliked slipknot for awhile. Because I never gave them a fair chance. I tried them again while open minded. And I was amazed. Slipknot is one of my favorite bands as of now. I don't even understand why I hated them anymore. If you ask me, their music is very unique & different from most other bands that I have heard. Nu Metal IS metal. Regardless. Its painstakingly obvious. I haven't met anyone yet who classifies it as fake metal

peaner083 I would argue it's dumb to dismiss genres. Theyre there to help clarify different things. If I ask someone for a recommendation for a band recommendation, that's vague as fuck. So we simple it down to metal. But that's also a little vague since there's so many different styles. So we simplify it down to, say, doom metal. But I want something I little bit heavier. More distortion. And I'm not in the mood for growling. So now we can draw it down to stoner doom metal. Boom. People who like the genre can then recommend me a band to fit my current needs. Once you get into something, and learn the differences, then you can start breaking it down even more. And more. So there is a point where it does get ridiculous. Sure. But it's helpful in that I can help someone understand the general sound and feel of a band without having to write an essay about every detail about them.

If you were to compare “true nu metal bands” to slipknot there’s not a real correlation. Sure the first album of slipknot had some rap like spit it out but it’s by far way heavier than bands like limp bizkit. The vocals are raw and heavy, the drums and guitars are heavy. What is any different than the gurgling rock vocals of death metal or the heavy riffs?

Having blast beats or neat solos in your songs in no way invalidate of what your band is. I know some people think only truly "br00tal" bands have blast beats and only "tr00" metal bands have solos, but that's what I thought when I was around 16 too. It's a nu metal band disguised as something it is not. From the tryhard lyrics down to the unnecessary abundance of members and the edgy imagery that appeals to their core demographic oh so well. They're not bad or good. They're simply boring and formulaic to the bone. But I guess they're decent for someone who refuses to experience any new or engaging music in their lives and just wants to headbang to some chugs.

Bands I have listened to recently are Slipknot, Gojira, Ghost B.C, Periphery, Tesseract, Behemoth, Amon Amarth, and Dream Theater. They blend elements of other genres to make their own sound. You know the tremolo picking in People = Shit? Yeah it reminds me something that could come off Behemoth's The Satanist, which is a very good album. You do know the the beginning of Sarcastrophe has a jazz intro. How many bands do you see have that? Tryhard lyrics? Arch Enemy's War Eternal is tryhard, not Slipnot. "Friend or foe there's no way to know In the battlefield of life its kill or be killed. So many times its a matter of degrees. From being up on your luck to down on your knees. Its a hellish inferno. This is war eternal." That is tryhard. why do we worry so God Damn much about sub genres? as long as it's METAL! Maybe you like it, maybe you don't. I've never been huge on slipknot or Korn, but I'll throw them on from time to time. We need to stop being elitists. it's not like you like every single band in your favorite sub-genre. I like some death metal, some black. some progressive. some Metalcore. I can't invest everything in just one of the sub genres because it limits the total experience that metal really has to offer.

I think we have to stop creating labels or sub-genres in metal scene because if we keep doing that we will open the gap for anyone that wants to put the "metal" label on their music for me slipknot, deftones godsmack and many other similar bands are Rock and for example megadeath, cattle decapitation, whitechapel etc are metal that's my point of view.

They all say the same shit... "we have our own genre" and they all explain the same dumb way "because when people hear us, they know it's us"... right, just like any, at least mediocre, band with a little bit of originality. When I listen to Slayer, I know it's Slayer, and they are still thrash. When I listen to Obituary, I know it's Obituary, they are still death metal. When I listen to Darkthrone I know it's Darkthrone, and still, they are black metal. aaaand so on... And as to being a precursor of the NWOAHM that's so stupid... it started way before Slipknot with the appearance of groove metal with Exhorder, and was popularized by Pantera. Some would even say it started with crossover thrash, but with that definition I don't totally agree

Well. I do know its slipknot when I hear it because I've listened to a lot of nu metal and death metal. They're like and mix. Korn is nu metal and when he said they're classified in the same light, that basically said that they are nu metal. Now that nu metal is kinda dead, they do kinda classify as another genre. Not every nu metal band has made it to this point of multiple albums and a mass following. So yeah. What does everyone else think? I wanna know.
