Sam turns 2 Box Elder bowls from one round burl. After truing up the blank, he cores a smaller bowl from the interior of the larger one. A good review for turning a bowl as well as for coring one.

As a newbie I wondered about doing that coring ... I didn't know it was an actual thing. So cool. Besides saving money ... The fact they nested in the tree is more interesting, they belong together. Plus finding good burl is probably hard and if a friend gives you some, gotta make the best of it. The big bowl for the chips the little one for the dip! Fwiw, I prefer it when those inclusions are filled with black or dark brown filler than funky iridescent resin. Looks much classier IMHO.

I don't know why but I love the wood turning videos even though I've never even used a lathe. I'd been wondering why there were so many bowl turning videos where the entire inside of the bowl was turned into shavings--interesting and even mesmerising (to me) but it seemed like there should be some way to get a smaller bowl out of that wood. And it turns out there is! Excellent, sir, and I also enjoyed your commentary.

Nice work mate. As well as being a wood turner I am a machinist and toolmaker. I have made my own bowl savers. I have now designed and built one that allows me to stack bowl blanks that are of identical profile but quite thin if need be. I can remove one inch thick bowl cores giving plenty warping when drying allowance and a family of five or six cascading bowls to be made from one decent sized burl. The main problem is getting decent burls to work from. I have " harvested " a few using a cordless chainsaw. The tree is treated after removing and the healing process grows new burls? What gets me is the crazy price of buying pre- harvested burls. Here in U.K. It can cost the equivalent of 100 to 150$ for an 18 by 6 inch burl! This is why need to get six bowl blanks from it! Can't be making one bowl and 80 to 100$ of shavings! By my reckoning I am at 80% usage which is pretty good in my humble opinion? Have you weighed a before and after to find your usage rate? Becomes a bit of an obsession to get this number as high as you can, anybody can do 20% but 75% + takes skill!
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER7 жыл бұрын
I read your comment with interest. I benefit from being an old "woodworker". That knowledge helps with turning a lot. I wold love to be more of a metal worker but lack the tools and will power to get into that. Have you seen the TV show Forged in Fire? It is really cool. 4 blacksmiths make some sort of knife. It is fun to watch. The coring I feel is essential for large hunks of wood. I can get lots of burl wood and fairly cheep, as long as it is box elder. Later Sam

That coring you made left such a perfect surface on the larger bowl!! Thank you for sharing Sam!

Hello from 🇨🇦Sam. This is an old video BUT new to me. I for some reason missed this one. Like I said I’m up here in 🇨🇦 and what you call Box Elder we call Manitoba maple 🍁. I recently bought several BEAUTIFUL figured and blood red burls of maple. I’m Very new to turning and have been told that I have s natural talent🤫. So I went and invested money in wood to turn??? A crazy concept I thought when I wasn’t turning, why buy wood when it’s free aka fallen tree branches. SO I THOUGHT. But I have and am ready to start maybe selling . Well I have no idea how much $ to charge? You mentioned with coring just that one bowl that you can buy a cutter .i have no idea how much they cost . So how much would a ( Unknown ) turner be able to sell the small bowl and the big bowl for. YOU OF COURSE being EXTREMELY talented AND FAMOUS would get much much more than a regular non famous turner would . So can you give me a rough idea ? Thanks for your time and for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
Mr B Unfortunately whatever fame I may possess it does not necessarily translate to sales.....(haha) You will find that our audience for one reason or another is made up of other woodturners who often are not in the market for the work of other woodturners. I feel we must collect and buy from other woodturners. If we don't buy the work of woodturners, it is difficult to expect other turners to buy our stuff. Sorry, I got off on a rant.... But here is a video that might help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpXNoIN4Yr1ni6s Sam

Lovely. my son is going to bring a truckload of box elder in the spring hopefully with burls. I would be interested on your philosophy of werin gloves ... or not? (Montana Wood Art).
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER6 жыл бұрын
Good morning Jack,Box Elder is by far my most favorite wood. Just curious whereabouts in Montana are you located? My wife and I are trying to move Billings Montana but the housing market here is really bad. You asked about wearing gloves. There are times when I wear gloves to protect my hands from the heat and chips coming off a piece of wood. I also wear a glove when I time turn the inside of the bowl, I were a glove to back up the outside so it prevents vibration. However you must be extremely careful. Getting a glove caught in a spinning chuck or imperfection in a piece of wood can be disastrous. It is totally your decision, just be very very very careful. Don't do it if you're not comfortable wearing a glove be safe Sam

@WYOMINGWOODTURNER6 жыл бұрын
It is all about slowing down the drying process. And I am in no rush. I first use the same wet shavings that came from the turning. I let the piece sit for a month or so then replace with dry shavings and eventually take the shavings out altogether. Sam

Hey, great video! Have you done the update where you finish those bowls yet? If so a link would be great! Also, I am pretty new to wood turning but was wondering how you feel about microwaving wood to quick dry it. I've seen it done on KZbin and tried it myself a few times with maple/birds eye maple and have had pretty good results from it. I'm too impatient to wait months for wood to dry as I get too excited for final results! What are your thoughts? Also, you need a Michigan shirt 😁
