Thank you very much! I like learning doing things by hand because I feel it's easier in the long run to train your mind for the skill. Most people just use jigs and as that probably works for a lot. I would prefer to know how to do it freehand as well.

Nice beading technique, Sam. I turn a lot of Bradford Pear and have never had a ring shake. Growth rings are almost imperceptable because of the tight grain. Could that have been a bark inclusion from a crotch? BP is notorious for very deep bark inclusions at crotches.

I generally do not care for added color. I prefer the natural wood colors. But sometimes I see something interesting. I like what you did with this one. thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Thank you. My issue with this particular project was I should have used a piece of wood from a limb or in grain. It would have warped a little differently. But it turned out OK Sam

The idea of using the threaded inserts is a great one. I think I’m going to give that a try for the 3/8 Thompson spindle gouge that should show up here today. I have some in stock that I used for some take apart hat display stands I made for my wife. I’ll go looking for the handle video now. Many thanks.

I have done a few similar but different chucks myself and my idea was to turn a cylinder with a tenon to mount it to a scroll chuck, hollowing it to project size and instead of holes etc I just cut a series of slits on the end with my bandsaw down parallel to the grain (spindle turning) out on the end down far enough to push the piece into place and then use a hose clamp to put the squeeze on the work. Works exceptionally. I keep the back end close to the chuck intact. One or more of the sections between the slits could be easily cut off to accommodate the handle. Super fast way to achieve the same result. Awesome informative video Sam as usual. One of my favorite channels along with Mike Tomislav and Richard! Hope this made sense. Take care Scott

Sam, great review. I was just recently made aware of it and appreciate your input. I have resisted the “captured” type system for various reasons. Feel like those might be better suited for really deep hollowing. Would love your thought? Winter is gonna hit here in MT one of these days . Stay say Sam.

Thanks for leaving the comment. It's never winter inside my shop.....😁 I have the Trent Bosch stabilizer that I would consider a captured device. The stabilizer is well suited for deep following. I personally don't hollow much beyond 11 or 12 inches deep. That is enough for me. With the Mike Mahoney Halloween kit, I am just figuring out the ins and outs of using it. But I think you could hollow a little deeper than with just an individual tool. But I do agree a captured system is far easier on my old hands and my hollow a little deeper. I am currently making another video on hollowing using the Carter and son Halloween tool. I'm getting more used to it and I can really believe you could hollow beyond that 10 inch depth. Anyway, hope this helps Sam

...cool little project...I like the "extras" you put into this...👍 I have only made two so far (newbie) and except for pen blanks, I've only used branches from tree trimmings or hurricanes...😨 As such, I don't "repair" holes or cracks...my second birdhouse has a split down the body and it gives it some character...however, using the large inclusion on this birdhouse was brilliant!...thanks...🥂 Matt

@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 19 күн бұрын
Andy Sorry this happened to you. The brush I have in my shellac is an artist brush. I’m not sure if there’s anything special about it. I got it at Hobby lobby. I’ve never had that happen to me. You might find another brush and leave it in some denatured alcohol And see what happens at least then it won’t contaminate your shellac. Not sure what else to recommend again sorry about this. Sam

Really superb video! Love this design! Idea. Take the 2 wings you sliced off and glue them together making a clam shell looking thing then sand it up nicely to match all the edges up, then either put a flat piece over the hole and make it the bottom of a bud type vase with a hole drilled in the top, or make the hole that was made after gluing the top and then put a base on it maybe using a dowel to attach the base for an open topped skinny football shaped vase with base. I think it would look great. Anyway, loved this one Sam! Take care, Scott

Very good Sam. Quite well done. Nicely sized and proportioned. Your idea to turn a bowl then bandsaw the sides off is quite interesting. As you were describing the idea one came to me. Why just cut the sides. Maybe cut triangles out for three legs. Or maybe ever four. I think you may have started something with this idea.🙂🙂
