This video shows how the Coriolis force can be seen and felt on a rotating platform, called the Utah State University Coriolis Carousel. As seen by riders on this carousel, balls that are passed between them and dumbbells that they thrust forward are deflected sideways. Discussed are: (a) applications for motion on the earth's surface, (b) how this force arises when transforming Newton's second law into a rotating frame of reference, and (c) the quandary in naming this force.
The USU Coriolis Carousel was designed and built by Boyd Edwards, John Edwards, and Reynold Edwards for a Science Unwrapped lecture on January 19, 2024 sponsored by the USU College of Science. The carousel is robust, collapsible, and portable, and can be used on any smooth, flat surface without damage to the surface. Boyd and John respectively teach physics and computer science at USU, and Reynold owns Rapture Audio.
We gratefully acknowledge support and encouragement from Lauren Anderson, Michelle Baker, Dana Chambers, Vanessa Chambers, James Coburn, Megan French, Mary-Ann Muffoletto, Greg Podgorski, Lisa Poulsen, Charles Torre, and Jan Sojka of USU; and Cori Stromberg of Triangle Manufacturing. For assistance in shooting the video, we gratefully acknowledge Aiden, Amy, Angie, Elanor, Isabelle, Jocelyn, Nadine, Olivia, and Sadie Edwards.
Established in 2009, Science Unwrapped is a series of monthly science outreach events featuring lectures followed by hands-on learning activities and refreshments, and held on the USU campus in Logan, Utah. Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to learn about the wonders, the joys, the mishaps, the fun, the unexpected detours, and the excitement of scientific discovery (www.usu.edu/sc....

Yes it is not a fictitious force at all but we all read this in high school as a pseudo force. Thanks for this amazing demo🙏

The dumbell is exercising a different force. As it moves closer to the center of rotation it moves faster. A similar thing happens when figure skaters pull their arms in while spinning.

Excuse me sir, I‘m Korean high school student and trying to make this machine in my school physics club. So if you don’t mind, I want to ask you if I can get a blueprint of this coriolis carousel.

I've uploaded some videos and other information about the construction. They're not really ready for public consumption, and I've not really finished them, but you're welcome to look them over for ideas. You can find them here: usu.box.com/s/4queixc923wlnixn5f59yxe0uziwkly5.

But I thought if it had the same momentum, it would work differently, Like if you are walking and throw up a ball, it will travel with you and inside your hand .
@michaelweir9666
@michaelweir9666 9 ай бұрын
You're right, and believe it or not that's exactly what's happening! The difference you see here and if you were to, let's say, throw a ball up while driving straight down a road, is that the force applied when the object shoots out is not the same as the rotating motion that the children are experiencing. Instead, the force is pushing the object in the direction that the child was going at the precise moment it left their hands, which would send the object straight outside the circle. Picture a shepherd's sling from ancient times, these men used this exact same idea to their advantage. They place a bullet into the sling's pouch and spin it in circles around them, storing a great deal of momentum into a small area, before letting the bullet loose at a precise moment. What happens to the bullet after it leaves the pouch? Does it fly in a circular curve around the man? No, it flies straight out. In fact, in the hands of a skilled slinger they can fly so impressively exact that its holder can aim with deadly precision against targets hundreds of meters away (when accounting for the downward pull of gravity). Where does the video's coriolis explanation come into play with this? Imagine this same scenario, except that you were the sling's pouch, holding the bullet as the sling is spinning. The moment the bullet leaves your grasp, we already know it will fly straight out, but what you will see from your perspective as the pouch is the bullet sharply turning as soon as it leaves the pull of your grasp. If the slinger were to keep spinning his sling, and therefore the pouch in perfect circles after the bullet leaves your grasp, then from your perspective it would look like the bullet is continually drawing circles around you as it flies away. Because you're still spinning, and the bullet is not.

It sure does and the sad thing is the majority are past the point of return, no matter the truth shown, the dumbed down will remain dumbed down unless God opens their eyes to see but even with that, when in doubt of God, dumbness will remain.
