Some notes about this.
We each repeated the experiment 3 times, and got the same results every time. For those of you who might be skeptical, great! The good news is that right circularly prismatic kiddie pools are only $10 and you can do the experiment for yourself at your latitude. There's really no reason you shouldn't do this on your own, so before you criticize how we've done it, I'd strongly encourage you to do it for yourself.

Gordon McGladdery did all of the sound design for the video. We used two songs from other artists (licensed of course). Derek split the first one up so it fades from video to video, and Gordon split the instruments up on the second one. There are violins on one video and percussion on the other for example. It's really neat.
The neat earth animation at the beginning and the synchronizing timer was made by eisenfeuer.com/. He also made still images of the earth from the top and the bottom.
Thanks to Jacob Vehrs for helping make the plywood pool platform.

There was a study performed at MIT years ago (web.mit.edu/hml...) that explained the physics involved. We repeated some of these demonstrations, but on opposite sides of the globe…and in a way that can be easily understood.

1 test and not testing to get counter results is not "real". Sad U say the is a "best example" of any science. Simple filling is not enough counter testing not to mention closely irrelevant as the pool settled before as well as the drain point influence is obviously the main bias that should be purified.

***** I think the number of people correctly "guessing" which one to put left and right has less to do with random guessing and more to do with their setup. In both videos Destin's on the left and Derek's on the right, and they keep pointing in the appropriate direction when they mention the other guy's channel. I think they subliminally told everyone which side to put it on with good planning.

The speed of the earth spinning at the equator is 1,600 KPH. A meter is 1/10,000,00 of the distance between the North Pole and the equator. The kiddie pool is 2 meters across. So the difference in speed between the "North" end of the drain and the "South" end of the drain is 2/10,000,000 of about 1,000KPH (due to your latitude). That equals a speed difference between the north point and the south point as twenty centimeters (about 7 inches) PER HOUR. As my analog watch dial is 3cm in diameter, the speed which the hour hand moves around the dial is 10 cm per hour, a rough approximation of the speed of the one of the furthest points from the drain on the pool. The viscosity of water, Brownian motion, and how the drain was made (is it made by the manufacturer to spin?) would completely overwhelm any Coriolis effect that is this small. Even tornadoes are too small to have them spin in any particular direction. Hurricanes are much, much, much larger so the Coriolis effect does indeed make it spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. The math first before the experiments begin can show how much trust you can put into the results you see. EDIT: the Wiki article about the Coriolis Effect had an example of a scientific experiment in 1908 that showed a statistically significant result of CCL draining of a 1.8 meter tub of water with initial conditions similar to what was done in this experiment but under "carefully controlled laboratory conditions", it took over 15 minutes before any rotation occurred, it was done many times, and the results averaged (which to me means that sometimes it did NOT go CCL). Was this experiment done under such exacting standards? I donno.
@smartereveryday
@smartereveryday 9 жыл бұрын
John Pombrio 7 inches per hour? Thanks for doing the math. This checks out. It took about an hour to drain. and the deflection observed was a little less than 7 inches. Awesome! Thanks for convincing me John!
@johnpombrio
@johnpombrio 9 жыл бұрын
SmarterEveryDay I am not trying to support your experiment, I am debunking it. The Coriolis effect is way too small to affect something as tiny as the wading pool unless all larger effects are removed. Since the water started to swirl (CL or CCL, it does not matter) almost immediately, the water around the drain itself would have moved less than a hundredth of a millimeter per hour east or west during the time that the initial swirl started. yes, tiny variations will cause the swirl to start in one direction or another but the CE is just so tiny. There is NOT ENOUGH SPEED caused by the Coriolis effect to determine the initial direction of the swirl unless all other possible larger effects are ruled out. Once it starts, and as long as the swirl continues in its initial direction, it DOES NOT MATTER what else happens (one hour to empty, two hours, who cares?) Other factors are way more likely to swamp such a microscopic movement. Your apparatus and environment a too crude to think of this as a valid scientific experiment. I can think of several flaws in your experiment. One is that you were lucky and the water spun CCL during your limited number of tries. The most likely one is how you designed the drain. The major problem was simply that your drain was way too large (it takes a lot of time for the tiny movement to affect the water swirl). If you used a flange that was not completely symmetrical (how the hole was drilled out could leave microscopic marks affecting the flow), the flow would be affected (does modern plumbing supplies deliberately swirl the water to aid in draining like they do in toilets?) Another is the bend in the PVC. Water flowing past may have been bent by the Bernoulli principle and sped up on one side, causing the water to swirl in a particular direction. Opening doors going into and out of the unheated garage could cause unwanted eddy currents. UNEVEN cooling of the water in the garage would certainly affect the results (sunshine through the garage doors during the day could do it). Ribs in the bottom of the wading pool may have been added to prevent slipping (are they in a spiral shape ?) or even tiny winkles of the plastic pool bottom and sides. Outside vibrations, air leaks in the garage doors and a subsequent breeze, how level the pool was all could add enough outside influences to get the water to swirl in one direction. Move the entire experiment in a deep cave. Use a huge ultrasmooth and dead flat tub. Create a drain that had its enter hole punched out and machined completely smooth VERTICALLY (rather than in a lathe). Have the water pour out directly onto the floor (no pipes). Add distilled water. Let it set for a month making sure that there are no thermoclines. Then run your experiment a hundred times. You still won't convince me but it will be much better attempt at eliminating other factors. www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-or-fiction-south-of-equator-tornadoes-spin-in-opposite-direction/
@pinkace

John Pombrio But... it worked.
@johnpombrio
@johnpombrio 9 жыл бұрын
pinkace Not enough tries to make it statistically significant. And the setup was designed to prove the CCL spin. There were no other factors except the Coliolis effect mentioned which makes it fail the Baloney Detector Test: www.brainpickings.org/2014/01/03/baloney-detection-kit-carl-sagan/ I still think the drain plug is designed to swirl the water to make it drain faster (like the toilet jets mentioned in the video). I will have to go to Home Depot to see for myself how they design the things. Or perhaps the kiddie pool has a ribbed design (to prevent slipping) that affects the way the water flows. The math does not lie. EDIT never though about how the draining valve causing eddy currents that could affect the spin. Thanks for whoever mentioned this.

Great concept, great video, think you got the right answer for the setup you have, but . . . .to get a confident result that you both didn't just do a coin flip predicting one would get heads and one would get tails (25% chance is pretty good), you each need to run this experiment a minimum of 30 times to get a statistical handle on the consistency of the result. Then there's making a connection to the toilet bowls. In the formula for Coriolis sits velocity. If the velocity is zero, there is no Coriolis. The water in both the toilet bowl and your pools started at near enough to zero, but both get velocity as they move in toward the drain. Problem with the toilet is that there is too little time and distance to build that up to any significant degree. You rightly pointed out that it is more jet and bowl shape dependent. Your pool had time and enough distance to let that very small Coriolis that had built up with motion, to finally overcome (probably, we don't know until you run 29 more) the other forces possible. Was it deionized water with no magnetic fields? I know that would be small at best but an ionic gradient in a field could come near the Coriolis force involved here.

***** Hurricanes travel away from the equator because of the Coriolis effect.. If you had a very large pool on the equator, I'd assume you'd get 2 swirls forming in opposite directions. Someone go try it!

Is the threading of the plughole and the direction in which the pipe flows the water not a variable?
@wol377
@wol377 9 жыл бұрын
VidSheridan Yep... there's lots of variables not taken into account here. During the time lapse you can see a lot of movement on the surface of the water in the garage due to air currents. The side of the pool nearest the windows would be a different temperature than the other side causing thermal currents in the pool (vertical, yes, but the sides of the pool are not perfectly vertical so you get horizontal currents also) As small as these external factors may seem, they still outweigh the Coriolis effect. Consistent bias leading to consistent results.
@NickSheridanVids
@NickSheridanVids 9 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I'd be curious if the result had been negative, how would Destin and Vertiasium package have packaged it.. Would we get a "the coriolis effect isn't real!" or "the coriolis effect is inconclusive" or just scrap the whole project.

VidSheridan The question isn't whether the effect is real, it's whether or not it's observable at these scales. The maths show the effect is extremely small at these scales and negligible when compared with resting water currents unless extreme measures are taken. That being said, if they had swapped pools, draining mechanisms and did it in a few other locations I would be more willing to believe this was the Coriolis effect in action.

Excellent point, I'd forgotten about the application to larger systems such as weather etc. Maybe they just needed two much much bigger paddling pools ;)

wol377 They said they bought the same pool. Do the random variations during the manufacturing process affect the draining system that much?

Ok Destin, awesome video, BUT: I had the Veritasium video on the left, and yours on the right, which in the beginning made sense, as it looked like you walked from his screen to yours. In the end though, it was all swapped around! Those are some continuity errors Destin, don't let me catch you on one again.

Another fun part about the Coriolis effect on hurricanes is that hurricanes cannot cross the equator without being ripped apart by the Coriolis effect. It’s actually pretty cool, since the Coriolis effect effectively repels hurricanes from the equator, when you look at a map of all the recorded hurricanes in the past 30 or so years, you’ll notice, none of them *EVER* cross a particular latitude. There’s like 10 or so degrees around the equator where no hurricanes have touched.

There seems like a lot of variables that could induce "vorticity" I mean, what about minute variances in the surface of the pool? Or putting the drops of dye in? Or if the pool isn't perfectly level? I dunno, with something so precise it seems like there could be a lot of variables unaccounted for.

+Ndoki Hasaki How do you know that the opening of the valve didn't affect the flow pattern? It would have to unless it opened from the exact center. This is not the case with a ball valve which relies on a twisting fashion which would create a bias in one direction or another for the initial inertia of the water to begin a circular rotation.

+Ndoki Hasaki being outside, wind can play a factor and coriolis effect has to do with air not direct gravitational pull. Inside a warehouse as a controlled environment is the ideal place. Also, direct flow with no valves must happen to not limit the drop.

this has been disproven, the direction depends on the nature of the drain itself.

Your point is well taken. Veritasium pulls a plug to drain. Smarter Every Day turns a valve to drain. The dropping of the food coloring was inconsistent (and ultimately unnecessary). Doing real science requires controlling every variable possible and there were many here that were obviously not controlled which gives one reason to call the entire "experiment" into question. To see the CE arising from Earth's rotation, one would need to see an appreciable latitudinal speed difference from one side of the system to the other. That's non-existent at the scale of less than 2m. Beyond experimental design, the explanation of hurricanes is either grossly oversimplified to the point of being incorrect or just incorrect. I recommend anyone interested read up on cyclonic circulation. The rotation of a cyclone stems indirectly from the CE, not directly from it.
