The merry-go-round examples helps so much! After watching this, i was about to ask how this works with an object “thrown” directly from east to west or vice versa, but i was able to figure it out by picturing the child at the edge of the merry-go-round throwing the ball not towards or away from the center, but to another point of the edge of the merry go round.

Sir i can't understand that why the ball overshoots the observer though the velocity of the observer will be more than that of the ball if compared...….??because the observer is at the periphery so he will cover the max distance and hence shall have max velocity...?? I am talking about northern hemisphere.....when the observer throws the ball towards the centre….
@iamitkr4 жыл бұрын
Velocity of the observer will NOT be greater than that of the ball. Two forces are acting on the ball : 1) tangential force due to rotation 2) force applied by the observer (thrower in your case). Both these forces are perpendicular to each other. The resultant diagonal force here (Pythagorean’s theorem) will be greater than any of the component forces, mainly because of the high tangential force here.. Hence, the ball will cover more distance than the thrower in same time interval.
