I remember my mother commenting of 1930's Dublin that "You didn't walk down Grafton Street on a Saturday afternoon without dressing up first" - these films of Cork in the early 1900's seem to catch some of that same outlook on life. Did poverty hide itself, or was nearly everyone poor, by modern standards? I noticed the same thing in a movie reel from the 1930's of a Sunday Mass crowd on Inishmore, Aran Islands - the people looked reasonably happy and prosperous, in what we are usually told was one of the poorest parts of Ireland in the impoverished 1930's.

Like any of those loyal to whom ever the "ruling powers" are, if you acquiesce, and dont question, you reap the "goodies".

Delusions of grandure more like. I was born and reared in Cork and couldn't stand the Delusions of grandure they had. People looking down their nose at people who were better off than they were themselves.
