Cork Bark Elm Bonsai Pruning and Maintenance

My 15-year-old Cork Bark Elm bonsai needs some pruning! It's overgrown and is shading out the smaller inner branches and looking a bit shabby so today I'm doing some seasonal maintenance so I can prune the new growth back that will promote back-budding lower down on the branches and create a nicer looking tree with leaves growing closer to the trunk. It's easy to do with simple tools, jus snip the branches back to two leaf nodes.
A quick tidy up of any weeds growing in the bonsai soil and she's looking much better than before, in just a few months I will show you an update when the new leaves have back-budded.

8 to 10 year?! 😲 how neat! It looks exactly like a mini tree lol..this is def going on my plant list. Yes the clippings are very therapeutic 👍

You should definitley grow a nice bonsai tree, they are a lot of fun! The Cork Bark Elm is very had to find now in some countries due to import restrictions but if you cant find one a Chinese Elm is also a very nice tree to grow and much easier to find. Can you start one of these from a clipping from a full grown tree?

Technically but you would have to grow outside in the ground or exercise extreme patience as it would probably take 15- 20 years to reach this girth in a bonsai pot. It’s better to buy the girth or trunk you would like and grow on and style.

BONSAI （盆栽）is a Japanese word actually. I found some in local Costco last week but none of them looked as nice as yours.

Thanks for the info! I stand corrected. :-) These that I buy are only really available from Bonsai growers, the local supermarkets don't get very good quality trees unfortunatley.
