Good run by Scott. The real time to be challenging Ovett though was in their peak years 78-83 and Scott only won 1 encounter at the WC 1983.

Wow, thanks for uploading this; I've just found it! Ovett was closing in on 33 years of age in this race but it looks like he clocked a sub 4 minute mile. Does anyone know his exact time? Steve Scott was six months younger than Ovett.

The LA Olympics destroyed Ovett. He had brief success at 5k in ‘86 but after that season he wasn’t training with intensity, he’d lost his kick and was just running for fun.

@@jamescarpenter6585 Well he did get 10th at the world 5k in 87 and beat some good runners - many good runners didn't even make the final. Also, he came second to Aouita that year in a 5k at La Corunna in a very strong field indeed.

Anyone know where this track was / is? I grew up in Cork but left at 17 in early 1987. North Mon boy. Not been back. Mardyke? Some university?

It's sad to watch a once dominant runner like Ovett become a pale shadow of his former self. In his prime he would have won this by miles easing down. I wonder what happened to him. It isn't age as Scott was the same age. I guess some athletes just have a shorter shelf life than others. Cram was washed up by 1987 in terms of Major Championships and he only had 4 years at his best level! 83, 84, 85 and 86. Cruz also only had a fleeting period at the top.

why did Borg retire at 26? Perhaps Ovett didn't want it as much and saw his future in the tv studios

It’s sad seeing Ovett a shadow of his former self. He was washed up here and should have retired in 1986 after his 5000m commonwealth title. He aged so fast and peaked quickly as a youth.
