Man...I have heirloom corn and as you point out, they pollinate so easily. I've just grown one variety at a time and that prevents cross pollination where I live.

You don't have to go through all of that Hassel to hand pollinate. Just need a newspaper to catch the pollen and blow the pollen onto the silks,using pollen from different plants as you go.
@chadhumm Жыл бұрын
On a research nursery it's done this way to prevent contamination. You want specific pollen to specific plants. That's why the bags. Only way to get 100 percent purity

Thank you, great demonstration, I have watched a few different videos and you have added to what they covered, thanks for the additional information. I am only growing 100 to 300 of each variety, do I have to save so many cobs for seed? What is the minimum to maintain diversity? I am just saving the seed for myself.

Very well done and informative video! We'll have to try all this next year! I have a couple of questions: - when do you start trimming the shoots back? - do I understand correctly that the silks can be pollinated pretty much as soon as they come out? - and for how many days can they be pollinated if I don't get to them right away? Thanks much, I look forward to next year's corn now!!!
@jhanks20123 жыл бұрын
i'm still learning too but from what i've gathered you want to pollinate the silks within 10 days of them showing

This video is very entertaining. I cringed and laughed out loud several times 9:45. Other times, I just laughed 10:54. If the corn stalk is looking really straggly and ugly, make sure to double bag it. Might as well take it 1 step further and use a Seasoning or Salt Shaker 14:55 Thanks again. Please continue to make these funny videos.

You dont want to sweep your tassles like that. So like when she says "and sometiems you break them and thats ok" no, you dont want to break them off and shouldnt tell ppl that info if theyre serious about growing corn. The anthers produce pollen for up to over a week, and if you are damaging them or breaking the stalk, you're going to stop the process. You could easily tap them over a bag gently and leave the corn as it is after that, you can gather pollen for days and sprinkle it over silks. So after she's done, that corn is all slouching and bent over. That's not good lol the ears aren't even pollinated and youre leaving a stalk injured. Just because you've gathered pollen and are self pollinated doesn't mean the stalk doesn't need to be left untouched and healthy. That damage can hinder the way the corn grows because the energy is going to that injury. Plants try to heal themselves. You could gently tap that pollen, sprinkle over the silks and then gently gently move the silks every day to rearrange any that pollen hasn't touched. Sry but this isn't a good example.

If you are doing this at home could you wash the pollen into a cup then put that in a spray bottle to spray on the silks? would the pollen pass through largely unharmed?

Unlikely. Do it their way.

Will the bags keep worms out also?
@peterlamont6472 жыл бұрын
My guess would be yes .. I started inspecting my silks when they are green. If you catch corn ear worms early, they never get inside the corn. For a little while(days?) They feed on the outside silk. Just pull them off and kill them before they ruin your ear of corn. I've never found an egg and they seem to lay eggs on fresh green silks. Once the silks begin browning the moths don't seem to like them anymore. So you only have to be vigilant for a short time.

@imbwildrd36933 жыл бұрын
As long as every silk gets pollinated then yes, every kernel will develop. Each silk corresponds to one kernel.
