Corn Planting Population

What corn population should you plant? Brian and Darren Hefty have some ideas to help you decide what's right for your farm.

Tim W....did you get abundant rains? Just enough rain or on irrigation? We corn farm beside a dairy farm. They planted at 38k on 30 inch rows. And we did 31k. We planted different varieties obviously, and we know our nutrient levels are less than theirs. We combined both fields that are 15 ft apart. All I can say for sure is that 38k and good manure out produces on a wet year. BUT...they had no cobs on the dry hill. Tall plants but no cobs. Huge gamble for a grain farmer. But not for a dairy. Perfect rains from above make a lot of decisions look like the right ones.

Best corn we ever raised was 39k on 15" rows. Out yielded 30" rows at 36k bu almost 40 bpa. Only factor changed was row spacing and higher population.

I thought that in the seed corn bags specified the optimum corn population to plant per acre

my corn this year only grew between 2-1/2 and 3-1/2 ft my soil is not bad, I planted sweet and yellow dent corn, what do think may have cause the corn stunting in the corns growth , I have sandy soil . I have seen other farms in the area with the same problem. I have notice there soil is not sandy but dark soil.
