Here in mid Michigan we always hang as far to the right as we can when breaking open a new lane, allows the chopper operator way better view around the spout, when first guy is almost full the next truck creeps up on left side and operator just moves spout with no stopping. I must say the American trucks certainly have more character to them though given the number of winter resorts in North America I'm surprised there isn't a company buying the secondhand PistenBullys and modifying them for use on farms for blade and compacting the clamps/bunks like have started up in Europe which are popular with large silage contractors due to their large blade with adjustable wings and inherent stability on steep sides.

We have A LOT of snowcats in the USA, definitely more than in Germany. That said, we prefer articulated tractors on big piles because they’re a lot heavier and can be equipped with duals.

Impressive operation. Thanks for capturing it. Two questions: (1) Why are the two packer tractors, 4WD articulated JD, moving so slow? They were on both sides of the divider, but their movement was the same. Why does speed of travel impact the packing function? (2) Who is making the call on where a truck returning to the field is to drive? With two choppers, and several trucks, how is the instruction on where to catch which chopper done? I think I only saw one case when a chopper was waiting on a truck. All other cases, when one truck is filled, another was right there to take over.
@samwaterlander81204 жыл бұрын
(1)there are two reasons for the packer tractors moving so slow one is because it helps pack each part of the pile better because your not spinning your tires and ripping up the pile and because on that pile it was fairly steep (from what I could tell) and that will save the transmissions on the tractor when you're going in forwards and reverse all the time especially on a steep slope it can take a toll on the transmission. (2) Generally, on most chopping crews all of their trucks and choppers have 2-way radios to help communicate with trucks and choppers sometimes the packer tractors will have radios as well to help guide trucks on where to dump on the pile.

A few comments -- 1) It is quite amazing to see all these heavy farming equipments and must cost a ton of money are they leased or out right purchase? 2) I find that there is a lot of spillage during harvesting is that figured in the cost of farming or written off as a loss. Thanks for the video very informative. God Bless and Best Wishes.

Fantastic footage Mike! Apparently soil compaction isn't (yet) a big issue on this type of land in the US, although adding organic matter at some spots it does at some places😉 In Europe and have seen in Canada and elsewhere in the US, much attention goes into tires, tire pressure, wide tracks and so on, all to prevent from soil compaction. I guess the trucks don't use tyre inflation system or how you call them ? Maybe you can explain why. What type of soil this is? Visually I don't see damage from the air from heavy trucks. Thanks again👌👍🙂

Great Video. I love machinery and am a Power Engineer. Anything with big engines and diesels and turbines is my favorite. I am curious as to how do the forage harvester operators know where to keep spraying the corn into the truck. Do they have a TV camera on the end of the auger arm? I never see them dump or waste any at the end of rows or when turning. How do they keep pace with the truck and fill it evenly w/o seeing it from their cab or can they?
@farmhandmike4 жыл бұрын
A lot of the forage harvester have a camera on the spout with a monitor inside the cab but you also have a pretty good view from inside the cab of the truck.

Hello, I am not a farmer, but I am the of person who likes to learn. What I basically do is I pick an industry that I don't know and watch videos on it, I seen all types of farming, this farming has got me curious, is this corn or a type of corn and what is it used for. I see corn harvesting where they take the meat and get rid of everything else, but only in Europe I seen this type of harvesting. Great video
@eltontv60024 жыл бұрын
really nice that you actually show interest in Farming. Yes this is corn. you can basically distiguish between two types of corn. there is corn for silage wich is what you see here. the whole plant gets chopped up into small bits and then compacted on a big heap, this is done to force any air out of the heap. After all the corn is chopped, you have to seal it up with a air tight foil. after you covered it with foil it will begin to ferment into silage. its done by lactic acid bacteria and basically the same thing as sour kraut/cabbage. this is to make sure that the corn is shelf stable for a long time until the new corn gets harvested in the next year. its high in protein and has a high amount of energy wich results in a big milk production in the cows. then theres the corn thats being threshed in the fall. its basically the same plant but in comparison to the silage corn its specifically cultured that i puts the most energy into the corn kernels to make them bigger and with a high amount of nutrients. that means the plants for threshing are a bit weaker and smaller with a big corncob instead of a smaller corncob with a bigger and stronger plant for overall bigger yield as you have in silage corn. i hope you can unterstand what im trying to explain to you because english is not my first language and im not sure if everything makes 100% sense in my sentences haha. Feel free to ask more if you like to best regards
