Which is the best way to make silage? Corn or Grass?

With both product I'd say there equally as good. To have both of them is brilliant rather than just one you certainly get the most out of it for winter feed. With maize you can harvest it for corn so you get that or can just forage it up for maize silage. Grass is also very important as it's mostly past or the cattle diet and feeding system and it's practically what they live on. To get the most of of both you need to make sure your looking after then of course. With grass to get the best yield your looking at slurry at best. As it's organic and extract nutritious and nitrogen rated high. Also with grass you can spread in organic fert and roll the grass aswel. Also you get different grass types aswell not in the game

All good points for the real world. And if you play with something like MaizePlus you often want both.

Very interesting, however for those wanting more from this get the Gowiel as it has its very own silage additive tank thus you can get a slight increase on top of what you get off the field and yes if picking up with a forage wagon with an additive tank you still get the bonus when emptying into the stationary Gowiel baler so that's a double bonus from silage additive you can get and yes silage additive will give you the the bonus from the Gowiel when putting chaff through it. So its a win win.

@CavalierRoy
@CavalierRoy 11 ай бұрын
Hahaha yes and no, if you want real cheaty then you could use a forage wagon with a silage additive tank to pick up the grass, then dump it out and pick it back up with the forage wagon keep doing that as each time you do it you get that bonus lol.
@DisTurbedSimulations
@DisTurbedSimulations 11 ай бұрын
@@CavalierRoy That's a lot of time for a small bonus. I don't think using the Goweil for an extra 5% would counter the differences. Does remind me of when I tried to do a triangle of beet cleaners and crashed the game
@CavalierRoy
@CavalierRoy 11 ай бұрын
Lol, now that would have been interesting. Personally i have yet to really use the Gowiel, but we did find this out in MP and was shocked that it was possible to do this however as you say is the bonus worth it in the long run. If your working with bales then yes but to go out of your way to get that bonus then not really.

prediction before watching the video... Corn silage comes out on top. not by much but time, fuel costs help the corn.
@DisTurbedSimulations
@DisTurbedSimulations 11 ай бұрын
Fuel costs are a tiny fraction of things, I think maybe £100 for the corn.

Not sure I understand the maths, but for one thing, if you did 2 years of tests, you would have to reseed the corn, while the grass grows back, so for longevity, grass would keep providing at low cost while corn needs the same processes every year.. that skews it quite a lot, I think? Also, why get a harvester for the grass as well as a forage-wagon, you could just do the pickup with the wagon, saving massive amounts on not buying the harvester that you don’t need. You could get much cheaper foragewagons that runs roughly the same amount per minute, so that seems skewed as well, but maybe I misunderstood
@DisTurbedSimulations
@DisTurbedSimulations 11 ай бұрын
Having already spent 7 hours collecting data there was a limit. You are welcome to run the tests for longer. And I didn't not buy a forage harvester and and forage wagon. The maths in the presentation was either or. And I talk about the cash savings and the fact the are many ways you can make both cost more or less... but thank you for stating things I said again. Looking at my spreadsheet ... year 2 corn is still more time efficient. (using the equipment I used faster / slower / cheaper / most expensive options are available)
@docd3d
@docd3d 11 ай бұрын
Not picking a fight, just trying to understand here 😊 In year 2 and beyond for corn you still mulch, fertilize, sow, roll, 2nd fertilizer (?), weed and harvest, right? With grass you roll then harvest so I don’t understand how corn can “win” time wise. And with the 66% yield advantage, that must surely compensate the 3x prep work? But even when counting the 3 harvests per year vs the one corn, you still drive over the field fewer times in total 6 for grass vs 7 for corn -if you fertilize twice.
@DisTurbedSimulations
@DisTurbedSimulations 11 ай бұрын
Ok.. here's some of the details. The first year of corn took ~1.7 hours to harvest ~169,000L Grass took 4 hours to harvest ~280,000L So over twice as long with the equipment I used for 66% more yield When you remove re-seeding grass that drops to ~1.95 hours, in the data I collected Running the numbers (I re-check) for year 2 corn is still slightly ahead on total time vs total yield (0.036 / 0.038). At year 3 grass becomes more efficient. I haven't accounted for the need to plow with corn as I don't have the numbers so that may skew things for year 2 onwards. Those are based on the total over the multiple years, not individual years And that assumes the equipment I used and steps I followed. Swathing mowers and faster collection of grass would alter things.

@@MrBertstare it’s doesn’t advance a growth stage when I tested it. It’ll change it from harvested to growing when you walk on the field, but when I tried on two fields next to each other, they grew at the same time. Unless that was a recent change?
