I've suffered from recurring corneal ulcers for years. Sadly my condition developed while i was in the Army and it took almost four years to figure out what was wrong with my eyes. I spent months on quarters, confined to the barracks, almost blind, on serious antibiotics, steroids, pain killers, and being seen daily by an ophthalmologist. Hadn't worn contacts in years. Then deployed to Iraq, with a flight surgeon giving me bottles of opioids just so i could do my job. Finally got sent to a specialist at BAMC, got put on a few special antibiotics, and cancer medications and it fixed me up. Still have to worry about recurring infections, and have a lot of corneal scars, just fortunate they don't affect my vision.

I never wear contact lenses. But the doctor said that my eyes had infection. It was related to contact lenses infections. I experience the same symptoms. Going outside during day is very painful to eyes, can't tolerate the light outside. Been absent in school for 4 days. Both eye are infected I'm afraid this will worsen. Honestly don't know what caused the white spots coz like i said i never wear contact lenses. I just can't bear any lights rn and it's depressing actually.

I'm currently suffering from a corneal infection of my left eye due to sleeping in my contact lenses. On day two of antiobiotic treatment and things seem to have been healing up quite nicely. The redness is definitely down and there is very little photosensitivity. However, the vision loss is still present but hopefully that goes away with time as things fully clear up. My doctor was VERY not happy to hear that I was sleeping in my contact lenses, so the blame is entirely on me for this. Take this as a lesson for all you folks that sleep in your lenses and think that this can never happen to you. It can and WILL happen to you given enough time, I've definitely learned that the hard way.

@@sh.aw.NY. Unfortunately, I now have a tiny scar right in the center of my pupil. It's nothing too significant really, but it's definitely noticeable when looking at light sources. Imagine astigmatism spikes, but with a bit of curve in them. I already have a bit of astigmatism in my eyes so having the scar definitely doesn't help, but it's at least far from debilitating.

@Shaw NY From what I know, the easiest precaution is to not sleep in contact lenses, that's how I got it. Other than that, just whatever your doctor recommends. As far as healing, I'm not really too sure. It's been almost a year since my infection and the scar is still present.

2020 here. I got my ulcer from wearing my contact lenses which did contain bacteria. I most likely scratched my cornea as I was taking them out which gave the bacteria the advantage to crawl into the wound the next day I put the contacts back in. I had no idea I had an ulcer until I was diagnosed with it. Mine is more severe because I waited two days before seeing someone. The spec was very very tiny. I was able to spot it because I studied my eye closely only because I was in major pain. I tried to figure out what was wrong. The first morning I woke up I couldn’t even leave from under my covers because the light was unbearable. I slept in my sisters room which was really dark especially with her window shades down. Then the day after I noticed the spec growing. The pain went from light sensitivity to the feeling of pins and needles being jabbed down my eye. My eye was tearing uncontrollably. I wanted to roll on the floor and cry, but I didn’t. I did go to the ER the second day and they couldn’t diagnose it, but a physician gave me numbing drops which felt like heaven. I was able to keep my eye open and the throbbing stopped for a couple hours. It eventually did wear off and i was in major pain again. The physician later admitted me to a retina specialist, and she wasn’t so sure what it was that I had so she got a sample of the eye bacteria I had then she admitted me to a cornea specialist (which I should’ve been admitted to in the first place). That doctor then diagnosed me with a severe cornea ulcer. He told me there’s a possibility i that I could permanently lose my vision. I almost broke down in front of him because the first thing I thought about was school. I’m a nurse major. What clinics or hospitals are going to allow a half blind nurse to assist patients? No way! I’ve been visiting my eye doctor every single day for a week. Then the week after the visits became every other week since I’m surely but slowly healing. The scar finally healed so therefore no bacteria won’t be able to get into the cornea. I’m still fighting the white spot right now. That’s my main focus now that scar has cleared up. My sclera is a tinted pink. In the beginning it was blood red... it’s only been two weeks! The pain is completely gone also. I’ve been prescribed Atleast 4 drops plus an ointment. Now I’m limited down to 3 drops and the ointment is only used for night. I know I’ll be able to fight this infection. I just regret the use of contact lenses. I will definitely switch back to glasses when I get better. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone else! Hopefully by week 3 I’m out of the woods. Prayers is key

Update: it’s now week 3 and the scratch healed. I’ll be put on the steroid drops to decrease the scar size. Unfortunately the scar isn’t going anywhere, but on the bright side it looks cool. Hello, do you know what would be effective against cornea ulcer caused by Moraxella gram negative? My dad has been on vigamox, besivance, tobramycin, vancomycin for 2 weeks now with little improvement. The ulcer is right iris so he can't see anything, he was just prescribed Fortaz to be used in conjunction with besivance and tobramycin. Would this help and what is the next step if nothing works, should we do another culture to make sure? If the meds are working shouldn't they be working by now? Dr., please help!

I had noticed some discomfort with my lense during the afternoon but hadn't got any spares or my glasses with me and it was Valentine's day so I was going out to dinner. After we had eaten I told my husband I couldn't wait to take my lenses out as it was feeling very uncomfortable now. I then took them out and cleaned my make-up off. My eye started to stream with tears I had some eye drops with vitamins in so thought they might help. In the end I thought I would get an early night and best to keep my eye closed. It woke me in the night and I was in pain. My husband works nights so I was alone and just got some tissue and dampened it and put it on my eye for a cold compress. When my husband came home at 6am I was in discomfort and had sensitivity to light and hurt to open my eye. Almost like it would spasm to open it. I wanted to give my husband some sleep so reapplied the damp tissue. By 9am I told him that I needed to go to the hospital. Unfortunately I had a long wait and then referred to another hospital for eyes. I was triaged and then told to go back to the waiting room. I was in that room for hours with no further consultation and I was the last patient. It turns out they lost my notes and the computer system went down- great! In the end after me complaining at the delay I was seen. It turns out I had a bacterial infection from my contact lenses which the Dr saw clearly when he put coloured dye in my eye. He told me if I left it I could have lost my sight - scary news. I was then put on ExOcin eye drops. First every hour for 3 days (even throughout the night) then every 2 hours for a further 3 days. Followed by 6 times a day for 7 days then 4 times a day for 7 days and I'm on my last week of 2 times a day for 7 days. During this time I had to wear glasses and not allowed to wear make-up. Never have I been so scared and I will not take my eyes for granted. I plan to wear them for less hours in the future until I can afford to get laser surgery.

Hi, I really hope you can answer me. I have had a corneal ulcer in my right eye since 1.5 days ago now (second time in the same eye in about 6 months) and yes I wear contacts but I changed to daily contacts after the first corneal ulcer I had yet I still got another ulcer. Anyway, I've been given 5mg levofloxacin antibiotic eye drops to put in my eye every hour (including at night) for 2 days, and then every hour of the day for 3 days, then every 2 hours for 3 days, and then for 7 days 4 times a day. I was told I couldn't wear any eye makeup until I stop this treatment or contact lenses for at least a month. My question to you is, what do you recommend your patients to do in terms of eye makeup / wearing your contacts again? I really hate not wearing both but especially eye makeup. In terms of pain and look, my eye has already improved massively since yday with the drops however what has worsened is blurred vision in that eye which is really worrying me. It's really blurred and I'm not sure if this is due to the drops or possibly scarring over my pupil. I was told the ulcer was very small and on the edge of my pupil at 10 o'clock if this helps? Would really appreciate a reply if you can! Thank you !

@@jaymirador-business8164 Hey, thanks for asking. It healed fine thankfully and i wear contacts and makeup again almost daily. i have had a few instances since that nearly turned into an ulcer but i caught it in time with antibiotic drops before it turned sinister. My eye sight has deteriorated a fair bit since then but hard to say if its from the ulcer or just generally. luckily the scar didn't cover my direct vision.

I am currently struggling with getting rid of an ulcer, I had one in my right eye awhile back and after being prescribed anti-biotic drops it eventually went away for awhile, this morning I had trouble putting in my RGP contacts this morning and after taking them out to put them back in again for a more comfortable fit my right eye got incredibly red and stayed red the rest of the day. before my eye doctor has said to put in at least 4 drops of the anti-biotic drops, how long until I know for a fact it wont occure again? would love to find a solution to this issue as I desparately need my comtacts for everything I do in life! thanks!

It's been 7 weeks since I was diagnosed with corneal ulcer. The first week my vision was 20/400, and used vigamox 4 times a day, and gentimicin and vancomycin alternating every 15 minutes. Slowly my vision got better and I was started on steroid. After a few weeks I used all 4 drops every 6 hour, however, my vision started to worsen. From 20/25, I went up to 20/50 in just a few days. My doctor decided to cut back on the steroid and go back to the alternating drops every 2 hours. My doctor said that the ulcer is clearing up, but she still sees activities and swelling. I'm just wondering if it's normal for corneal ulcer to worsen while on medication. Also, besides having cloudy vision, it is also blurrier a few hours after waking up in the morning. Thank you!
@IsaacPorterMD
@IsaacPorterMD 10 жыл бұрын
No, it is not common for an ulcer to worsen when on appropriate treatment. Usually after the first few days, a bacterial ulcer that is treated with antibiotics will no longer have active infection. Ulcers caused by a virus, fungus, or other unusual infection that is not responsive to antibiotics could worsen when using antibiotic drops, or there could be another corneal problem at the same time. I hope it improves for you!

If I don’t wear a protective eye shield then my eye starts to water, is that a good thing due to treatment? Or should I continue wearing the eye shield all day? I am currently diagnosed with a corneal ulcer and maybe 2. Initially, I was given Ofloxin and there was no improvement after a week on this med. I was then seen by a corneal specialist who prescribed Besivance, Azithromycin salve and a steroid for pain. After a week, there was improvement. At that time, I was switched to moxyfloxin, same salve and decreased steroid pain drops. After a week on this treatment, the ulcer that had started healing was back with a vengeance. They have put me back on Besivance, Atropine and Bacitracin . It is some better but still not a lot. I am a little scared that this ulcer isn’t healing so quickly. I go back to the specialist in the AM.

Last Tuesday I was diagnosed with pink eye in my left eye. My doctor gave me polytrim drops and told me to put them in both eyes because the infection would most likely spread anyways. Surely enough the next morning I had pink eye in my right eye. Friday came around and even after using the drops I was seeing no improvement, my eyes were still completely blood shot red. So this time I went to an actual eye doctor, she said that it was a viral infection because of an infection in my upper respiratory system and that was why the drops weren't working. It's now Sunday and my left eye is now in great pain and I have a small white dot below my iris. Could this be a corneal ulcer and what do you think caused it? The conjunctivitis itself or the drops?

My dad has a Corneal ulcer for the second time in twelve months (the first instance occuring while he overslept with his contact lenses). This second time, however, was the result of using toxic chemicals while cleaning around the house. I'm doing what I can to make sure he gets healed. For now on, we're going to make sure he's wearing protective eyewear while he's at work or doing things around the house. I'm staying with him, for the moment, because he can't see while driving. And because he's a poor, working-class guy, he can't afford antibiotics (just a measly consult cost him $100-$300). I prefer that he just heals himself naturally, using eye supplements like Lutein or Astaxanthin, and when the money comes in, we can buy an antibiotic.

Lutein and astaxanthin can be helpful pigments for the retina but I haven't heard about them helping with corneal infections or ulcers. I hope it clears up for him!

Hello I wear contact lenses as well and I had gotten pink eye but I would still put the lenses on even if I was infected with the pink eye, so my doctor said I had gotten keratitis in both of my eyes, she gave me eyedrops with steroids in them so the bacteria and inflammation could ware off, and eventually it did and I only had 2% of inflammation and bacteria in my eyes after I was done taking the eyedrops, so further more she gave me my contact lenses back and today was my first day wearing them again, and as soon as I got home from school I took them off due to the irritating feeling in my right eye, when I did that both of my eyes had a spot of redness in them, what does this mean? What should I do?

just went to the doctor because i had irresponsibly slept in my lenses for several days and my eye became infected to the point of severe light sensitivity, redness and intense pain. he dyed my eye and looked it with UV light and said it was an ulcer.I was prescribed vigamox and so far no change...i can say that it is really painful and i bought an eye patch to cover my eye which definitely helps with light sensitivity. i need to take better care of my eyes lol.

Once patients stop using contacts for a few weeks, we usually do not see any after effects from the contacts. Would be a good idea to check back with your eye doctor to make sure everything is still OK. Thanks for the question!

I got my first ulcer about 2-3 years ago and most likely was caused by contacts. I have since stopped wearing contacts completely after the first incident but it seems every year around the same time of year (September-November) it will come back. I have read that if you get cold sores a lot then this can cause it and I do get them often. I just wish they would stop showing up because I'm worried how long my cornea can keep up with them.

Hi what about wearing a pair of contact lenses for 2 month instead of 1 month, like? prescribed? I had my left eye swell up in 20 minutes in the afternoon and turn red. I flushed it out it out with some water and 3 hours later it looks just about fine. The swelling was gone but I was still wearing the contact lenses. Could this be the issue?

I you have an ulcer on your eye, you have to have your eyes checked. The ophthalmologist will have to determine the possible cause, and administer appropriate treatment. If it is due to infection, you have to be given topical anti-infectives.

This used to happen to me often. I applied a cold compress for 5 - 10 mins to ease the discomfort. I was extremely sensitive to light and my eyes were watery. This happened for two days. I slept a lot (10 hrs+.. I usually sleep for 5/6 hours) and wore sunglasses (indoors and outdoors, even though it wasn’t sunny). On the third day, my eye was no longer red, but it still felt uncomfortable, so I wore my glasses that day. On the fourth day, I put in a fresh new pair of lenses and used a new case that night.

Hello! I have a bacterial corneal ulcer caused by pseudomonas... Its my third week having it. In the beginning i was on vigamox and another drop, alternating every 30 mins. The week after, just one of the drops was kept, i think its called torbomisyn. I had to put it in every hour. Now its dropped down to every 3 hours. The ulcer is slowly getting smaller so my vision is getting slightly less blurry. There was a 5% melt of my cornea. I don't know if you would know this...but by what ive told you, do you think my vision will be severely affected ? I'm pretty sure i will have a scar but will my vision be permanently blurry? Thanks!!
@IsaacPorterMD
@IsaacPorterMD 10 жыл бұрын
The best prediction of how much the vision will recover is probably how bad the vision was when the ulcer was severe. If the ulcer was in the center of the corneal and was a large ulcer, there is a greater chance of a large scar remaining that will continue to cloud the vision. A 5% melt is not a large amount, but still it could change the curvature of the cornea and cause distortion. Hopefully you have started to recover well!
