Michael is not unlike Cornel, because both understand that after love of self, to love your neighbor is the natural progression. But at the same time practicing love at home is the real lesson.

Michael Moore is a filmmaker...most filmmakers are not the most eloquent and succinct of people...they ramble alot. What they lack in conversational ability they make up for in talent in expressing themselves through their films. Michael has a worthy point of view that he expresses in his films.

All people have biases. Awareness mitigates them. You can't walk out your front door without exhibiting biases. If you don't realize them in yourself, you can't deal effectively with the issue.

I agree with you that men change when they come into position of wealth or power. All men of every race do this. I live in America and I am a black man. That in itself should explain my position of America and the European race. I agree with your statement.

I don't know which vids you've been watching, but he always brought it in terms of arguments. Plus, he spent his career debating, whereas West has always been more of a solo speaker. Anyway, West often stated that they were friends, so they probably wouldn't have argued anyway. Hitchens was super affectionate to people that he liked.

see i'm more inclined to hitch. they're both without a doubt the two greatest orators of our generation.

Long live Cornel West and those like him. We need this kind of mentality now more than ever. Cornel West tells the objective truth whether the president is black or white.
@WeAreComingForThem12 жыл бұрын
Michael Moore lacks class and eloquence but he sure as hell makes it up in courage. We dont have to be scholars or politicians to bring about change; we need boldness and creativity. Despite all of Michaels imperfections, he has far more influence than the rest of the panel together. He's a modern day hero.
@JayArgonaut11 жыл бұрын
Agreed. West understands that social justice has to be all inclusive, otherwise it is a farce. I cannot help but think that Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man is now painfully relevant to the Native American experience. As Chris Rock noted, no-one in the USA has had it as bad as Native Americans.
@cswayzer111 жыл бұрын
True...all people do have biases or preferences, but that doesn't make them racist. I prefer to address my people's issues, but I am not racist nor prejudice and unsympathetic toward other's and their racial and social issues. I Cornel has stated many times that he cares about all people, but his people's issues are personal to him-and that's fine. A Palestinian fighting for his/her people's rights is not necessarily racist towards Jew.
@dinaheena942611 жыл бұрын
West is the only high profile commentator to talk about Native American poverty and marginalisation. It's sad how Native American's are invisible in the American political dialogue.

I hear you, but I think that is often a generalization as if there is one kind of intelligence. There is street intelligence, for example, which is vastly different than scholarly intelligence. I appreciate his style as much as Cornel and honor your feelings just the same.

But based on the fact that it is politically disadvantageous to directly address any political constituency (in particular Afro-Americans), speaks volumes to the racial and social issues in America. This is a nation that has a violent and racist history, so I'm not surprised that these problems exist. Afro-Americans have always attempted to make America a just nation, but she has resisted with violence and incongruous legislation toward minorities.

We don't want to play oppression olympics here. Indigenous struggles may differ in some contexts from the struggles faced by blacks in this country. However there are intersections where history notes the intimate ties , political connections and betrayals of black people at the hands of indigenous people in the context of European colonial expansion and the trans-atlantic slave trade. We have to remember that suffering wasn't just a one or two way street, but often involved multiple hands.

Intelligence isn't the only thing that's needed. Too often in the Western world, intelligence is the only thing valued because it's linked to "progress". But in reality there is a serious need for empathy and conscience, both of which Moore has in abundance. But I do agree with you in that I don't see how this dialog between these two will yield any answers. It's really just more preaching to the choir and back-patting rhetoric with very little in the way of solutions.

Neither of these guys are against capitalism; it is the unfettered capitalism that they are against. Obviously they don't have a problem with capitalism based on the fact that both of them are doing better than most of us commenting on this video. But what they speak against is the power and control plutocrats and oligarchs have in our democratic, republic (for the people by the people) society.

Cornel is not racist. Assuming you have read any of his books, you should read more of his writings. He only speaks to the racism coming from white America-which you cannot deny exist in our world today. Disapproving someone's racism , violence and hate, does not make you racist.

You've just given me the same sort of answer in a slightly watered down form. The 'blame game' will get you nothing but bitterness and it's one of the oldest 'divide and conquer' tactics there are. Your mindset is what the ruling 1% wants it to be on this issue. Like I said last time and you ignored, It's 'lots of people arguing over the crumbs they leave us on what will be a dead planet'.

If I might respectfully disagree - Hitchens was a thinker who was good at breaking down the barriers of political correctness, but after watching some of his debates I was less impressed with his factuality. A lot of what he claimed was only somewhat supported by actual evidence. In any case, sometimes his attitude seemed to be a little warlike and hostile to foreign culture, an area in which West has, in my opinion, a much more respectable and constructive viewpoint.

"I don't know which vids you've been watching, but he always brought it in terms of arguments." Yes, but sometimes those weren't backed up effectively, for example he tried to state that the Catholic church depicted Stalin with a halo, or his comments on the Afghan pipeline with respect to Fahrenheit 9/11. You're right that he's a debater and West isn't though.

Yes. You personally didn't commit those vicious crimes against humanity, but generations of your people have benefited from your forefathers' crimes. That is the reason some white people have "white-guilt". And I don't think having white-guilt is a problem, I believe it is sympathetic and understanding.

Moore is painfully inadequate here. He needs to do some studying and maturing before coming onto a panel like this. His unsophisticated, unenlightened understanding of the issues here show he's not even in the same league in terms of his ability to converse and contribute intelligently with Dr. West and Esther Armah.

I recognize more than 1 type of intelligence. However, I don't think Michael Moore, here, exhibits much intelligence in the form of scholarly intelligence, street intelligence or even common sense intelligence. Compared to the other guests, he's a distant third across the board.
@Non-Serviam30012 жыл бұрын
Once again, Moore reducing everything to you're-either-with-Obama-or-you're-a-racist. It's as if Moore doesn't think people, whether they're black or white, have the intellectual or moral capacity or right to vote without regard to race. I feel Moore would urge people to vote for Obama just to prove they aren't racist, without regard for whether or not he would actually make a good president or not. Therefore, Moore is still coming from a race-based position while trying to sound non-racist!
