There are several replies to your comment. I didn't really see one agreeing or disagreeing with you directly. So I'll come right out and say: you're right. I'm actually amazed, because usually Big Mac's technique was WAY different from the great Warren's. If I hadn't been informed that this was McNeil, I would have assumed it was Warren - on an especially good day. As a long retired singer myself, I would hazard a guess that in this particular performance, Mac was trying out a different technique just for the hell of it. Thankfully, he must have later been talked out of it by colleagues. Nevertheless, this is a world class rendition, making this very difficult aria sound easy. Best regards. 😃

Sounds VERY similar to Warren in this clip. Interesting to note how many of the great baritones actually sounded similar to each other. Same technique I suppose.

Aaron Dimoff I’d argue Warren covered more (especially on top) than Mac. I wonder how well Warren’s voice would have aged, as I think he sometimes over-covered and bordered into woofy territory. Mac sometimes was the opposite and didn’t cover enough, but I think his voice aged very well, all things considered!

Correct. I tend to think of Warren as having a bit more "head voice" function, while Big mac having more "chest voice" in his sound. I'm sure they could sound like each other if needed as a party trick. A lot of the best singers sang the way they did out of preference, not necessity.

Chris Stockslager Warren had a great, large and very developed voice no doubt, but a lot, if not most of the time, he admittedly is somewhat woofy in the middle

Agree, which is why I to think of his technique being more head-voice oriented than Mac.

Aaron Dimoff Yeah I can’t day I disagree with you,it probably is so, but woofy has more to do with depressed tongue, meaning pushed in a, too far back and down position, and also depressed larynx, to some degree at least. Basically over-muscling the yawn-like position of the larynx and pharynx. I’m not sure if I’m getting my point across clearly enough..
