Third And Final Chick "K3" Hatches, Receives First Bites At

Big Red and Arthur's clutch is complete! K3 was first seen working its way out of the shell on the evening of May 5 at 6:58 P.M. after 34 days of incubation. This morning, K3 joined its nest mates during feeding time and finally got its first morsel from Big Red.
Congrats to the hawks for another year of successfully hatching all three chicks! Now Big Red and Arthur will spend the next month and a half raising their nestlings into free-flying juvenile hawks!

A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since at least the 2012, making use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012 and 2015, they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus.

I actually wrote this for the Decorah North eaglets years ago, but it works here, too! My fans call me a bobble-head, it seems that this is true. My neck is long, my head so round, my feathers are still due. I flail around the nest bole when mom and dad aren't watching. I've got to start exploring, else what's the point of hatching? My siblings are my buddies, we usually get along. But there has to be some bonking to prove that we are strong! Our meals are all so yummy, there's squirrel. racoon and trout. Our parents stuff us to the gills until we just pass out. One day we'll leave, that is the plan. Well spread our wings and fly ... For now we'll stay with mom and dad until we claim the sky.
