Even though it‘s true that there is a low conversion rate, one has to consider how many corners there are in a game. I don‘t know the exact numbers, but having 10 corners in a game isn‘t that uncommon. If we boost the effectiveness to just 10%, we‘d end up with a corner-goal every match… not saying that’s something we definitely don‘t want, but it would change the game quite a lot. EDIT: in the Premier league there were an average of 10.15 corners per game in the 2020/21 season

I'd go so far to say that this would be something I wouldn't want. The beauty of football lies within adapting to situations in the flow of the running game, not studying set pieces. @shambhav9534

Most of those corners are due to the opposition just mindlessly clearing the ball. They would stop doing that if the chance of the ball going in is 10%. I'd say it needs to be 20% so that we get more fluid games and interesting corners.

I remember that back in the 90s, I heard someone (probably a former player or a pundit) saying that a corner is a 1/4 goal. It was either a big exaggeration or corners were much more effective in the past. That being said, Sporting scored two almost identical goals from corners in the CL the other night, so I checked the stats and they had 7 corners. This is certainly more of an anomaly and it was probably games like this that made people think corners are more dangerous than they actually are.

wait wait wait wait. (1) 3% is a relatively high rate. it’s higher than goals scored after throw-ins. and it’s higher than goals scored after the ball switches possession. it’s only logical that corners should yield less goals than free-kicks from the same distance. (2) it’s good defending to kick the ball out in corner. (even better defending to kick it out on the side, where a throw-in has an even smaller chance of scoring). It’s also good goalkeeping to punch the ball in corner. The game should reward good defencing not punish it. Football is not broken don’t try to fix it. The fundamental rules and regulation lines of football are so darn perfect it’s no surprise it’s the most popular spectator sport ever. It just works. It’s a game that seems to reward the right actions, and at the same time anything can happen. It’s perfect. The corner circle radius is perfect. Just as the size and shape of the penalty box is.

I think you haven't thought about the consequences in the dynamics of the game with these new rules... I am all for improving the game but goals on corners are not something we want that much. Teams would just try to gain corners instead of trying to score goals through technical plays. Also, corners are not always a sign that a team is attacking effectively, so punishing a team so much for conceding a corner is not good for the game as a whole. That said I would increase the corner a bit, maybe 1.5m... just to make for more room and I would keep the No Offside rule on corners

No one logically plays like that. It’s the same argument as the nba will get obsessed with 3s yet the best teams in the league last year had the best driving and best rebounding of any other team. It’s a new layer that takes a vestigial limb and makes it useful again. If anything it’ll balance games where big money teams just pass themselves to a win. @@devononair 3% conversion rate doesn't mean they're useless. On average there are about 10 corner kicks per match (Premier league 2020/21 season the average was 10.15). Yes, and especially as it's worth remembering the game isn't played by just pros - young/inexperienced players are terrible at preventing and defending corners and to make them even more punishing on the defense would probably dramatically affect youth development in terms of what coaches have to focus on, and then you'd eventually see effects on the overall game at higher levels, i.e. lower quality of open play.

This means the team which is taking the corner is in control of whether to prevent the counter attack or go all out for the goal, which I think is fairer than it currently is.

I think corners are fine as they are to be honest. Never thought of them as an issue. It's not like we're short of goals in modern football, so I wouldn't think that more attacking changes were necessary at all. 🤷‍♀️

The biggest issue with this is that you could, within regulation, have a pitch which is 50 yards in width. If you consider the penalty area is 44 yards in width, you are only left with 3 yards either side of the penalty area. So there would be no way of making the corner quadrant any bigger than 3 yards. And trust me there are pitches out there that size, I've played on them

Would love any of these suggestions to be given a go, but could you imagine the uproar if any were to be trialled?! The sky would be falling in for so many people. I think the bigger corner spot is the best idea. Maybe not quite as big as you suggested but opening up angles would certainly help.

Interesting recommendations. I actually quite like the last one (4:49) as, at some point in the future, heading will be outlawed. That idea would work in both today’s and tomorrow’s game.

Why do you believe heading will be outlawed. If anything they would implement helmets first, which could see microphones added into those helmets for manager, player communication leading to the rapid evolution of tactics.

Corner conversion rate being at 3% is a good thing. Tweaking it and making it easier to score from would mean teams would try winning corners for 90mins rather than attacking “normally”, especially for underdog teams. They would boot the ball up to the corner flag and contest the ball there hoping to win a corner. Then after a corner is won, their chance to score would be 10% for example, if these ideas are implemented.

Absolutely love the idea of developing the game, to better fit modern players and tactics, without damaging the fundamentals of the game, but I think some of this might be a case of "the punishment being too harsh for the crime." Moving the corner "spot" 3-5 meters backwards, would be a great start.

the first 2 sugestions seem ok. still: 1- 3% sucess rate may mean less goals scored but greater enthusiam/joy when a goal does come from a corner kick. Football is about emotion and everybody loves an underdog. 2.-40% dont fo pass the first defender just means bad corner kick takers.

Interesting video. In the last two home matches (16th & 19th Oct) Bradford City both scored and conceded directly from a corner. They scored and conceded against Bristol Rovers, and scored against Hartlepool in the following game. Maybe corners present a greater threat in the lower leagues, possibly as a result of poor defending for set pieces. I might be wrong but corners maybe do produce more goals in the lower leagues than the top divisions.

Instead of expanding the corner quadrant, because it creates problems with distance to the goal, just allow the attacking team to take the kick anywhere along 10 yards of the side line (ie where you’d normally have a throw in)

Very interesting perspectives, I would support the 10 yards expanded quadrant, seeing that it would not take away much from how the game is currently played, and without restricting players' movement into areas at any time. Great idea.

One thing that crossed (ha) my mind watching penalty corners in field hockey with a mix of American football would be to make all defenders stay on the goal line, between or outside the goalposts, and forwards on the edge of the box. It would become a game of kicking the ball into space and hope your guy gets there first, or use movement to trick defenders into, for instance, cover the near post and watch the ball fly past them and connect with the 5'7 midfielder who nobody paid attention because what's he going to do, head the ball in?

Would like to see a corner how they play it in field hockey. A long corner is awarded if a defender accidentaly puts the ball over the back line. Long corners are taken approximately 23m back from the goal line and in-line with the point at which the ball crossed the goal line.
@mikexkennedy
@mikexkennedy 3 жыл бұрын
Check out field hockey long corners. They're now taken from 23 yards from the back line, in-line with where the ball went out of play. So if a ball deflects off a defender and goes inches wide of the post the attackers aren't penalised and pushed all the way out to the corner flag.

You need to up the crazy for equal numbers of attackers and defenders in the box - there has to be EXACTLY the same number, including the keeper. So if there are no attacking players in the box then the defending team can't even have a keeper in the box. Then you also add a rule that says if no-ones in the box the taker can't inswing the corner you have to take an outswinging one to make it harder to score direct from the corner

Sounds like the Americans trying to change the rules of football after World Cup ‘94. “Let’s make the goals bigger”, “let’s introduce different coloured zones that give you higher points for scoring from further out”, “let’s take away goalkeepers”, “let’s halve the weight of the ball” “We need higher scoring numbers and more stats!” How about just leave it? They’re just corners. Same as always.

i have a way easier solution. pick a spot 5 yards from the sideline and 25 yards from the endline and draw an x on it. The ball goes on an x and you get a wide free kick instead. you get the corridor of uncertainty, and the ability for teams to change up how they defend or attack them. the real way to change corners is for teams to determine how to shoot from distance better (i think a designed screen game to keep the keeper unsighted like a close in free kick could work but requires alot of moving pieces, italian set peices at euros) if you could shoot from range that opens up corner possibilities.

I think you tackle the problem precisely in the first 30 something seconds, in the intro: corners aren't more effective because most teams don't care about working on them in training and making them effective. So, the problem is not in the characteristics of the corner kick in itself, but rather the teams/coaches who should be practicing them more, if they want more goals from them. I remember that in the 19/20 season, the club I like (FC Porto) scored 74 goals, 13 on which where from corners (+5 from indirect free kicks). That's almost 1 out of 6 goals, or almost 1 goal every other game! It was so common that, if the game was kind of difficult, the fans were almost betting on a corner goal to save the game. This was because it was obvious that the coach practiced them frequently, because he saw corners as an opportunity to unlock the score and the team, at the time, was not the best at creating goal chances against tight defenses (which they encounter in 90% of the games in Portugal), so this was a good way to do it. Of course, it also helped that we had a good crosser (Alex Telles, now at Man Utd) and tall guys in the back (Pepe, Marcano and Danilo-now at PSG) that were skilled at heading the ball accurately.

Make it so that the attacking team's goalkeeper is allowed to punch the ball from a corner before it hits the ground. Imagine the goalkeeper being sent forward in the 65th minute to get a team back in the game. Alisson vs West Brom happening more often. Insane counter attacks when the defending team clears the ball, and the goalkeeper having to rush back to his own box.

What would make teams more dangerous and score more goals is to allow the use of hands and make anything scored outside of the box 6 points while anything inside the box 3 points. We should also change the whole line up every 7 minutes or so.. make the game really excited.. oh and if the goal keeper scores it counts as 21 points
