Cornerstone Gladio Pedal Review by Dr. Ric

This is a review of the Cornerstone Gladio Pedal. In today's video, Dr. Ric is playing his new Gibson Les Paul into his new favorite pedal called the "Gladio" from Cornerstone effects. The Gladio is a Dumble-style overdrive featuring some pretty amazing tones. This pedal is handbuilt in Italy and like most effects from the EU, it sounds wild. Cornerstone sent this pedal to Ric at a discount and we have not been paid to promote or produce this video.

I've had this pedal for over a week now. It's absolutely a tone machine. Touch responsive, very dynamic, no noise at idle. Quite pedal, soft foot switches. Single and stacked drives unreal tones. Into a clean amp or one on the edge. This pedal delivers. This is the most expensive pedal I've ever owned so I was super critical if it's worth it. Let me put it this way it's staying on my board for life!

Thanks so much Robert! 12 months ago I was using a Friedman Dirty Shirley head & cab as my main live rig. Awesome tones for sure... but I wanted a more versatile rig... and switched back to using a clean tube amp as a pedal platform. Finding the Gladio preamp (after owning dozens of great overdrives) has been like the holy grail for me. I know it’s not cheap... but if I dared to add up how much I’ve squandered over the years on pedals, the price of the Gladio would pale into insignificance. The amp-like dynamic response of the Gladio melds seamlessly with my clean tube amp...it doesn’t “feel” like playing a pedal. Stay tuned for more content featuring this wonderful preamp...I’m so happy to have it as the heart of my guitar rig!

Beautiful playing, Dr, thank you. It brought Mossie and One Long Day (my fave Chisels track) to my head - despite the Strat/LP thing. But the style, sweet bluesy/jazz feel, and dynamics were reminiscent. Maybe I need to listen to Robben Ford more (thanks for recommending that album). Great work, and lovely tones!

I’ve loved Robben Ford since I first heard “Talk To Your Daughter” in 1988. He’s a “guitarist’s guitarist” if you know what I mean. I’ve been lucky enough to see Robben live several times... and it’s always like a religious experience! Amazing tone, super tasty chops and a cool energy! If you love Robben’s tone...you’re gonna love the Gladio! I’ve owned a couple of Zen Drives previously and I know that Robben uses them when he can’t take his Dumble ODS on tour... but to my ears the Gladio sounds so much closer to his tone. Cornerstone is making the Gladio SC which is more economical but still nails the RF tone. I love the Gladio so much that I’ve pre-purchased the SC...go ahead...make your day!!!

Would love to see a video on Dr Ric thoughts on moving from single coils to Les Paul! I’m a tele player and I would love to get a LP but haven’t bonded with any that I played too heavy/ muddy. Everyone I talked to said you have to search for the right LP.... interesting concept! A tele you just pick off the wall and it sounds great. Merry Christmas both!

I was exactly like you mate...seemed like every humbucker I ever played was dark and “flubby” with no top end clarity. That all changed when I played my mate’s ‘64 Gibson 335 with a pair of PAF’s and 50’s wiring configuration. I loved the chirpy open tops, vocal mids and warm clear bass! I found great tones at all settings of the volume pot. It was a powerful epiphany after 30+ years of playing single coil pickups exclusively! I recommend Gibson Custombuckers and Burstbuckers, Lollar Imperial low turn HB’s, Seymour Duncan Antiquity HB’s wired in the classic 50’s configuration. This will give that big “Tele-on-steroids” tone that I’m now completely hooked on!

The other pedals on my board are: -Sonic Research Turbo Tuner -Pete Cornish NB-2 linear boost/line driver -Drybell The Engine foundation preamp -Cornerstone Gladio -Strymon El Capistan tape delay simulator I’m super happy with this configuration...probably the only other pedal I’d think of adding would be a Drybell Vibe Machine for some cool modulation effects. Hi, thanks for your question and support! I have the Pete Cornish NB-2 linear boost second in my signal chain after the tuner. It’s a great sounding buffer that helps to maintain a crisp treble tone that can get lost when running through multiple pedals and/or long cable runs. It’s a great clean booster too!

Hi Glenn, happy new year mate! I used a Two Rock Crystal 20 watt combo in this video. It was plugged directly into the Two Notes CaptorX reactive load/IR interface. I’ve been using this same setup live (see the short live clip at 3:32 in this video)...and I’m really pleased with my tone! I’m also really impressed with the Gladio running into a Milkman Creamer combo fitted with 6L6’s and a Magnatone Twilighter 6V6 combo. Thanks for supporting our channel!
