A recent survey compared over 1400 cities, towns and villages and assessed them against 18 criteria to give each place a score. Using this tool, we discover which town is the best place to live in Cornwall. We were shocked by the result!

The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film around Cornwall and publish on KZbin, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.

We moved to Saltash 2years ago and love it! Would not live anywhere else. The shots shown in the video was mostly the waterfront under the bridges. There is a town, a park, leisure centre, amazing views over the river Lynher, great access to Nation Trust @Cotehele, Anthony House...the list goes on. The best thing about living here is the sense of community. Fore Street celebrations for May Day, Christmas lights, a huge remembrance service where I think the whole town comes out! The proximity to the Rame Peninsula is fantastic. Been here less than 2 years and have a wealth of friends. The Saltash ferry has started again linking directly to Royal William Yard. This is not to say the other places aren't lovely too, but when I see a comment about "as rough as rats" it makes me smile.

Great video as always, thank you. Top 3 for me are Hayle, Penzance and St Just. We visit multiple times each year and always stay on the holiday parks near Hayle. It’s perfect for the beaches, wonderful views and some great takeaways. Chilli, Sanders and Hayle kebab!

Hi Sarah and Andrew. I was surprised Mousehole wasn't on the list but as you say it's too small . The place I would live was as Penzance is my dream location. Although Cornwall has got some wonderful places to visit and to live. I think it should come out on top in the way of county to live.

I’m from a village near Epsom in Surrey, which was ranked third…but don’t believe the hype…it’s London overspill, and I couldn’t wait to get out. There are good schools and lots of amenities, but Epsom is a dump. We moved to Devon a few years ago to be nearer to my husband’s family, and couldn’t be happier! My favourite place to live in Cornwall would be somewhere in the Helford estuary, and I love Falmouth, which is nearby. I do love visiting St Ives, but it is too busy in summer; maybe I could live in Lelant or Carbis Bay🌊

Disaggree about Epsom, Lived there for donkeys years. Great place to live, good bus and train services, Good Hospital (until they eventually F**k it up) Libraries, Supermarkets etc. All this until I retired and downsized to Canford Cliffs, Dorset. The best place for me in Cornwall is St Ives, always has been since I first went there in short trousers on holiday every year with my parents. Still love it today.

@@keithjackman8886 yes, Epsom used to be lovely when I was growing up, as did Cheam and Banstead, where I’m from, but by the time I moved in 2020 they had all changed so much unfortunately. St Ives is lovely and I was there last month; luckily it was a sunny cloudless day and the sea looked turquoise and the sand almost white in the sunshine; it’s an amazing place to be except in July and August, when it is far too busy for me!

"Best" is very subjective. Especially if we are talking about Living rather than visiting. There are some amazing places down here but they are a 30 mile round trip to the nearest A&E that haven't been on a bus route for 25 years.

SALTASH !!! Wasnt expecting that. I spent several years living in Plymouth and often visited Saltash. I would take the train to Looe and walk the coastal path to Polperro which Im surprised wasnt on the list. I Agree with Falmouth, has really interesting history, beautiful river cruises for a day trip and of course Pendennis Castle.

Really interesting video, we've been visiting Cornwall from Glasgow for a few years now, and love it, never been to Saltash, but on first viewing, don't think we'll be rushing to go there. Top 3 (in no order) are, Charlestown, mousehole and St Mawes.

Very entertaining and educational video. As an EMMET (with capital letters, and from Norway 😂) I have probably no say in this matter. But I have walked through and visited most of these places. I had expected Falmouth, Penzance on top of the list. And if I were to choose a place to live I'd probably pick one of those two. Truro would also be high on the list, as would St. Ives and St. Agnes. But Saltash came as a surprise. I admit I have never visited Saltash, but I have passed it a number of times by train, and sat foot on the railway station when we had to change to another train. ​@AndrewMinns Thank you for the tips 😊. We are walking the South West Coast Path and we have now covered the path from Westward Ho! to Charlestown. There is limited time to take inland walks, as we are travelling from Norway each year and want to make the most of the days we are away. And we have seen quite a few abandoned mine ruins and rural areas, woodlands, gorse and brambles, farmers' fields and livestock. And we love it. We have also taken a couple of detours, walking St. Michael's way, and visited friends who have shown us a bit of Bodmin Moor and the very narrow lanes, and walked the Hall Walk from Fowey. This year we are going to take a pause in continuing walking the path, and revisit West Penwith and stay for some nights a couple of places; walk some kilometres along the coast again and take more time to look at the area. And also do some inland walks to see old ruins and stones from the bronze- and iron age. It is all beautiful and the people are friendly and welcoming. 🤩

Saltash was a genuine surprise! We didn’t show much of the town, mainly focussed on the waterfront. The town was heavily bombed in WWII; they were trimming to hit the Brunel bridge and we think that’s changed the character of the buildings completely. Sarah :)

What? Neither Fowey nor Lostwithiel on the list at all? Astounding. And as a town, although it is gorgeous, St Ives is hardly without problems for residents, considering how awash with tourists it is in summer, and the limited, expensive parking and traffic issues.

You have to be Cornish to really understand what Cornwall is like. Everywhere has its pros and cons. So many people are moving down without a clue where they are. They just want to move to Cornwall because they’ve seen it on the telly and the sun is always shining and everything looks lovely, but they are all aiming for the coastal towns, in particular, St Ives, Hayle and Padstein, but then they realise they can’t afford it. Saltash is as rough as rats, as is Plymouth. However, the north east part of Cornwall is very quiet as is the Roseland, which is what Cornwall was like 100 years ago. So tranquil and unspoilt, but extremely remote. I notice the majority of the top places are based in the Thames Valley, which is understandable because it’s good for work, but I am quite surprised Twyford is top. It’s just a large village with a few shops, but there are well paid employment opportunities in the vicinity and a train link to London.

I agree. I lived more in Cornwall (from the early 1980s in Redruth, through to Perranporth later in the 2010s) than any other county, and I have seen the changes first hand. It has sadly changed beyond all recognition.

Love your KZbin site. I was brought up in the UK and moved to Australia when I was 18. We travel back to the UK quite a bit and drive everywhere and have been to Cornwall a lot. I agree that Falmouth is lovely and St Ives is too but both can get very crowded in the summer months. Like you, we always drive over the bridge and have never stopped at Saltash as never seemed appealing.

I totally agree with the place that is number one on that list when you take into account the criteria - particularly, employment, transport and education. S also has great access to the very best (in my opinion) part of Cornwall - The Rame Peninsula. I wouldn't mind living there, although Bude is still my favourite by far, it would get marked down for connectivity and employment. I was very surprised those two towns that you mentioned didn't make the list. I used to work in St. Ives (I was the manager of the Woolworths store there from 1995-2001) but I'm afraid to say that I would hate to live there - ugh! I loved that Woolworths! My husband and I used to visit western Cornwall annually for many years, starting in the late 90s. I agree with you about St Ives now; it's just too overcrowded, and those pay toilets and crazy parking prices are depressing. But back then, to us, the town was perfect. Woolworths was maybe the last example of a regular store in St Ives that was meant for the residents, rather than for tourists, and I always loved stopping in there because I felt at home. :)

@@marthaj5466 Yes, I miss Woolworths too! Woolies in St. Ives was very special store - I was very lucky to have had a fantastic store team, and wonderful location. I have very fond memories of working there. St. Ives is still a great place to visit, but not to live in now, in my opinion. From the late 19th C to the early 2000s it would have been great, with a terrific sense of community.

Well, the best pastys are from Prima Bakery in Scorrier. Mount Hawke is only a 5 min drive from there and Porthtowan is only a 5 min drive from there. Falmouth is a lovely place and they have Trago. And then there is Hayle, Nice and flat, lovely walk down St Georges Walk and then pick up a Philps pasty and sit on the harbour wall. Bleddy ansome.

As a St Blazey resident i think its a great place to live, well connected, near the coast and the facilities of nearby St Austell, accessable to both north and south Cornwall.

I guessed Saltash straight away from your clues, and like you, surprised it was first place. I presume the proximity to Plymouth (for jobs)and as John Betjeman said, lower cost council type housing, reflecting the property value criteria. For me though, anywhere around the Penzance area. My own home town (Bristol) was 104th , far higher than it should be.

II live in Saltash and am surprised at the rating, but if you consider it in the context of more affordable housing and proximity to employment and facilities, alongside its more attractive elements, I can understand this. Despite it being on the very eastern border of the county there is a distinct feeling of 'Cornishness'. There is also a very good community spirit in Saltash. The town calendar includes a May Fair, Regatta and Christmas Festival, and there are many activities and groups for young and old too. The waterside and heritage trail that you explored are not the only attractions that Saltash has to offer. The China Fleet Club, Leisure Centre and Churchtown Farm Nature Reserve are all within the town boundary as well. Looe is a 35 minute drive away, as is Bodmin Moor, while the Rame Peninsula, Whitsand Bay and Tamar Valley are also close by . You can reach the North Coast in just over an hour too. I grew up in S.E. Cornwall, and lived in Plymouth for short while, but moved to Saltash because I thought it would be a good place to bring up a family. 40 years later my family has long flown the nest and I have considered moving further into Cornwall, but for all the reasons above I'm staying put! www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/nature-reserves/churchtown-farm

I agree with it being number one, and it absolutely is 100% Kernow, and not a Plymouth suburb. It makes sense on a number of levels. I used to work in St. Ives, and I would hate to live there! Expensive, crowded, noisy, no sense of community.... I would also rank Redruth and Liskeard highly in terms of livable places too. Paul

Lovely video.Many people retire here because it sounds like a healthy place.Like many places in the UK,Cornwall can be very damp in areas ,this leads to people with respiratory problems suffering more than they thought they would in comparison to where they lived before which were drier. I was surpised by Saltash as it's only just in Cornwall...a few hundred yards from Devon. Having said that, whenever I travel down and cross the Tamar Bridge, the tense shoulders drop and my heart gives a sigh of relief at Saltash, and then I know I'm in Cornwall! Penzance is the one for me. It's always had a special place in my heart...I've visited on and off for over 30yrs. I like its slight quirkiness in architecture and mood/culture, and the layout. Not being a motorist, It's also a fantastic public transport hub for all parts of Cornwall. As soon as I possibly can I'll be moving to Penzance :)

I was on the list!!!!haha!! - all joking aside ‘Saltash’!!! I suppose it depends what they were looking at or through (rose tinted glasses perhaps) Probably employment - Plymouth is on the door step, the River Tamar is pretty, cheaper housing, transport links, & history but, I have never thought of Saltash as somewhere I yearned to live. Saltash is awful, lots of much better places to live in Cornwall. Whenever we have been to Saltash, everything looks so grubby and unattractive, I know that it is probably great for employment opportunities having Plymouth so close but it's a hard pass for me! My personal favourite is Falmouth, closely followed by St Ives.

Really surprised that Fowey wasn't on the list. That would be in my top three, along with Looe and Truro. Also think St Austell should have been higher, as the areas on the outskirts (between Mevagissey and Charlestown) are lovely; it's well positioned to access north and south coasts and has great transport links for the whole of Cornwall.

I never go by a list. Your heart tells you where home should be, although that's not always possible of course unless you have pots of money!! Saltash seems a very strange choice for No.1 on a list that size. Anywhere around the Penzance area would be lovely, or the Lizard...which is where my daughter is right now! Redditch, where I live is 1,352 on the list! It's a Newtown, or it was in the 60s. Lots of employment, lots of rabbit warren housing estates. I'm a Brummie by birth. My dream Cornwall town is Helson as I love that part of Cornwall. My second choice is Falmouth. I have friends who live just outside of St Ives in Lelant and their two bedroomed terraced house was awfully expensive. They're very happy there. Never been to Saltash.

Hi you two Lovely People ❤😂, now that’s really interesting, as a Non British Citizen I was Daydreaming about Cornwall for a long time….maybe if I win the lottery 😂😂 But playing around with that thought I was looking at property websites etc and I always favoured the Countryside behind the North Coast or close to Falmouth, but away from the high Tourist Streams still with Stores open Year round and a bit sheltered from the Winter storms…lovely Video like always…❤

Falmouth for me, still vibrant in Winter and it's a working town. St Ives forget it, unbearable in Summer. As for Saltash, it's too close to Devon lol. What wasn't on the list was crime rate per 1000, that makes for interesting reading.

Like you, Saltash never really features as somewhere to visit in Cornwall. Sadly not surprised Wadebridge was lower down the list. Been holidaying in that area for over 40 years and its not as vibrant as it was. Love Falmouth, would like to be away from the coast though and near a good pub.😂

It doesn't matter, as long as it's in Cornwall 😅 my Favorite Place is Mevagissey and evereything around Kynance Cove/Lizard, but I only know it from vacation ❤.

There’s a big difference between going on holiday and living somewhere. Out of all the places I’ve visited in Cornwall, Falmouth would be my favourite place to live, followed by Looe and Newquay.

The pollution off those bridges is a no!, let alone the white noise from all those vehicles, try going to some of these places in winter time grey and glum, always wished to live in cornwall but now I'm older I know I'm better where I am, it's a nice place to visit once in a while.

I spent almost 6 months in Hayle with my dog during lockdown - and hadn't it been for Brexit AND the housing situation I would gladly have lived there...They have everything for a dog owner - from the beaches to King George III Memorial Walk, the bridges.. Hampsons of Hayle, St Erth, shops, lovely library❤️ and lovely walks all the way to St Ives ...or to Gwithian and further...I miss everything there 🏴‍☠️💔

I can’t speak for St Ives as I rarely go there,but Falmouth has,since I’ve lived in Cornwall for years ,has been dragged down to a place to avoid.I think it might have something to do with Falmouth now having a large student population since the opening of Falmouth College ,part of the University down here. Most students have very little money to spend and so can’t contribute to the higher end of marketing like other places enjoy.The result of this is that many businesses fail because of lack of customers.Even hair salons etc. that are very good and deserve the charges they make find they cannot survive in Falmouth. There is also a high vagrant population who sit around in the streets intimidating holiday makers.I was once told that word gets around about how it’s much nicer to sit around streets in a coastal area with beaches etc claiming benefits than in the middle of land locked cities.

I agree with you , st ives should have been top. But having been going to Cornwall over the years , it has changed immensely. But tbh i think a lot of the country has gone down in the last few years. With places closing and parking being a problem for many .

If I chose a place to live and size of the place didn't matter I'd always choose Padstow. It has everything for my family kayaking on the estuary easy access on the water to rock and Wadebridge, has fishing and a lovely harbour too with fab food. Not yo mention Camel trail and amazing walks all over the place don't forget the beach it's there a lovely beach near hawkers cove... I'm currently up the coast from St Michael's mount going out towards praa sands short walk out of marizian. Lovely museum there free my kinda place. Causeway we walked it came back refused entry too many people already.. 😮 Thanks for the video must visit that No 1 place to live, but gladly leave after a day's visit. Kev the brinklow kayaker

Redruth for me it’s in the middle of Cornwall easy access to all of it not Saltash take hour an half go St Just and the Lizard St Just is my one my favourite it’s bit to far west but 👌

Seems to me the company that put this list together probably came up with their results from ‘on line’ statistics and maybe some photos. Am sure they didn’t visit the listed towns. Hi i really don’t understand this list I’ve I’ve lived in Camborne and Redruth for a combination of 15 years and the crime down here is through the roof it’s awful down here, also Truro and Newquay are high up which makes me no sense. I won’t deny Truro is a beautiful city the crime there is really bad one of if not the top for crime! I don’t think you realise how bad it is down where I am which includes Truro. Sorry I’m not trying to be offensive but it’s the truth…I’m so glad I’m moving to Port Issac in a few weeks 😊

Oh dear near the bottom of the list comes Bude , our regular summer holiday place for over 10 years . Still prefer it over some other places on the list . Not too big and crowded . As for Looe , what happened to Polperro ?

Often the lack of parking in Polperro puts people off which is hardly surprising.Years ago I took my sons and their friends shark fishing on a hired fishing boat,no Great Whites landed but the day out was loved by all.

Saltash has its up and downs like most towns at least we are better than liskeard Saltash is better in the spring and summer in july we have a regatta which is really good for tourist

Interesting video with a few surprises. I feel like there is a lot of snobbery in Cornwall when it comes to places like Redruth,Camborne and Bodmin. All of these places clearly suffer from some poverty and lack investment in the town centres, but if you spend some time there and scratch beneath the surface they also have a hell of a lot to offer. They are all in Cornwall for a start 😂, so close to amazing beaches and countryside, amazing community run projects, lots of history and heritage and if you seek out the right type of people in these areas you will find friendly , outgoing folk. As pretty as St.Ives is I would personally say that apart from that it doesn't have a great deal going for it. Overcrowded in the summer,lack of parking and too many second homes/holiday rentals. It's a personal choice at the end of the day that depends on individul/family needs. For me I prefer a down to earth friendly community within walking distance of a town but also the countryside but overall I think that living anywhere in Cornwall is a win 🏆

It's hard to make a choice as the truth is that no single Cornish town really stands head and shoulders above the top rated ones. I live in Penzance and have done for fifty years, it is my choice for no 1, but i am biased. St Ives, Truro and Falmouth are lovely too.
