My parents grew up during the Great Depression and Cornmeal Mush is a breakfast that was eaten during that time. Even today, this is still a cheap meal and you can make it for 10 cents a serving. Grandpa loves it topped with brown sugar and cinnamon.

Dear Ms. Grandma Feral - you can greatly reduce the chance of lumps by adding 1 cup of cold water to the cornmeal and letting it stand while bringing the other 3 cups of water to the boil. Then add the wet cornmeal to the pot and do as you already do. Thank you for your history - please can we have some more 30's to 80's recipes.

At our house growing up we would have it at times for supper then mom would pour what is left over in a pan and put it in the refrigerator. Then in the morning she would take the firm version of it and cut it in about half inch slices and fry it in a pan with butter. We would have stewed crackers, mush, eggs and scrapple. With tomato gravy or beef gravy. Yummy

When I was about 10 my mom asked me if I would like to eat something from her childhood. I always thought my mom was a great cook n my mom was born 1923 n the oldest of 14. She made cornmeal n a pot of beans with all of the seasoning that grew in her window sill in Puerto Rico. I really enjoyed that plate n she smiles and said its poor peoples food. She really worked miracles with what she had at hand

Cornmeal mush is wonderful stuff, nutritious, delicious and very economical; thank you, dear Grandma Feral, for sharing this recipe, accompanied by a story that reminded me of my mother's tales of eating _polenta_ (Italian for "cornmeal mush," FTR) for breakfast, lunch and dinner during her childhood during the First Great Depression. WALMART sells tubes of pre-made Polenta. Its not full of preservatives either. Its usually in the baking Isle, if not just ask or you can Google shop it on your phone to find the location of it in your local Walmart store. It still sells for under 3 dollars. You can slice it and warm it in the microwave and add warm milk to make it into cereal in a bowl add your own toppings or fruit.. Or you can slice it and fry it in butter in a non stick pan and use the fried Polenta slice for a sandwich or serve it with bacon and an egg. You can also use it in thin slices to make a Polenta lasagna if you layer it with spaghetti sauce and shredded cheese and bake in the oven. Or you can fry it and serve it with a scoop of ice cream or chocolate sauce. Its very versatile and so many ways to make it tasty. I hope you try it out, maybe make a video of it and see how Grandpa likes it. 🥰

@@semperfi818 Hello C.R. Barboni!!!! So happy to see you here. Yes, if you have very simple Italian recipes, I would love to try them. It is about time I learned how to cook. I cringe when I have to toss out spoiled food ----- left over ingredients which are used once for a psrticular recipe. I have been transitioning to a vegetarian diet , not quite all vegetarian. I shall email you with subject : Italian recipes ------- Grandma Feral channel. THANK YOU C.R. BARBONI!!!!! ☺☺☺

Mom would make mush from Cream Of Wheat. I LOVED it when there were lumps in it! Fried mush in our house was when Mom would put a batch in a loaf pan and the next morning slice off pieces and fry in butter. We would eat it with syrup, powdered sugar, and butter. I taught my kids how to make it and they still do! Thanks Grandma!

My father use to make this then pour it into a loaf pan stick into the refrigerator until It sets up then slice it into sizable strips pan fry it on both sides until it becomes golden crispy brown , serve with butter and salt and pepper or just real maple syrup. That’s fried corn meal mush.. delicious!

I used to have cornmeal mush with my Grandma as a kid at Bob Evans. After she passed, I would order it at Bob Evans because it reminded me of her and brought back warm memories. It has since been taken off the menu.

This is called “mamaliga” in Romania, and it’s another traditional food - served with feta cheese on top and some sausage on the side. A whisk breaks up all the lumps while you stir it in.

Mom and I used to have cream of wheat when I was little, and still have oatmeal, but I don't think I have had cornmeal mush for breakfast. Filling, economic and tasty, this would have been a godsend in the Depression.
