St. Elmo’s Fire is a weather phenomenon where a glowing blue or violet light appears near sharp edges or points, such as an aircraft’s wingtips, nose, or antennas. It occurs during thunderstorms or heavy electrical activity when the surrounding air becomes ionized, creating a visible discharge of static electricity. While visually stunning, it is harmless to the aircraft and its systems.

Kerosene behaves alot like diesel. As long as there is nothing to hold the flame, its completely fine.

The flame temperature is very much dependent on the ratio between kerosene vapours and oxygen. 2000 degrees is only reached in the stoichiometric ratio and with an adiabate combustion. Secondly: Kerosene produces very little vapours and has a minimum flashpoint of ~38-60C depending on which type. In this case, its most likely JP-1, meaning a flashpoint of 42C. This means you would need to heat the liquid over 42C to get it to ignite. You could most likely throw a burning match in a canister at room temp, without anything happening. In this case it would be sprayed, meaning there would be way higher vapourisation, making combustion much more easily. Still the air speed of the aircraft would remove the vapours so quickly that there wouldnt be any combustion or sustained flame. The speed of the flame front would be to slow for that. Also fun fact: the kerosene used in the SR-71, JP-7, has a minimum flashpoint of 60C, and that made it so hard to ignite that they couldnt use sparkplugs but needed to use a pyrophoric chemical to get it to ignite (TTAP).

こんな不良な視界の中で航空機同士が触れ合わんばかりに接近して飛んでいる映像自体が珍しく、 見ていて不思議な感覚です。 画面上では速度を感じないので、まるで暗い深海の探査機の映像のような印象でもあります。 A-10 なんて顔も描いてあるし、探査機の照明と餌に寄ってくる深海魚のよう。 高感度カメラで飛行中の航空機と共に映る星らしきものが伸びて見えるのも不思議。 また、よろしければ、今度、空中給油装置のジョイント機構の紹介、解説をお願いします。 どうやってシールしているのか、前々から疑問なのです。

その「星らしきもの」がセントエルモの火では？ 大航海時代、荒天時に帆船のマストの先端が光る現象、だったと思います。 私もこうして映像で見るのは初めてです。

@@yoda_dayo 返信ありがとうございます。 伸びて映る「星らしきもの」と表現したのは、具体的には、9:20 以降の背景の空に写る、 画面左下に向かう浅い角度で短く伸びる複数の光点のことです。 一方、セントエルモの火とは、本動画冒頭に明確に捉えられている放電現象のことと認識しています。 前者は、セントエルモの火とは異なる現象に見え、また、下記のように説明が困難な現象に思えました。 UAP でしょうか（笑）。 ・通常、星ならば点として映るところ、概ね一方向に短く流れている。 ・一方、それ以外の被写体は流れない（A-10 のコクピット内の照明が流れているようにも見えるが、 　元々そのような形状のものであるか否か、残念ながら存じ上げません） ・A-10 を追ってカメラがパンするが、光点はそれと逆方向には尾を引かない。 　従って、長時間露光で星が流れて映る現象とは考えられない ・カメラパンに合わせて画面上を移動することから、画素の焼き付きなどではない ・A-10 の機体によって覆い隠されることから、それよりも遠くにあるものが映っていると考えられる。 　また、これもカメラ画素の不具合を否定する理由 ・カメラの移動に伴い画面下の雲が相対的に画面左へ流れていくのに対して、まったくといっていいほど動かず、 　消失点に近い非常に遠い距離にあるように見える 9:13 あたりで、A-10 コクピット内の照明が他と違って上下方向に伸びるので、 これは、超望遠光学系の滲みが高感度撮像素子の特性とデジタル画像処理に伴い強調された、 アーチファクト的なものかなー。

Um... this is happening because they're flying... lol The aircraft acts as a Faraday's Cage and the built up charge travels the body surface and towards points of release - that's what those long antenna things you see on larger aircraft wing tips are for. The small protrusions of these probe like whisks are not always sensors or pitot tubes, they're meant to direct the current back out into the atmosphere.

Well the A-10 has the shark face on it and there was another fighter that either has a kill count or deployment markings behind the cockpit

Barely. At all. They used to have a lot more freedom but these days only approved stenciled work is allowed, such as "call signs", kill markers and squadron identifiers. The Warthog gets the under nose maw because it was designed IN THE 50s and has had that Maw installed for decades... grandfathered in bc the A-10 has no stealth characteristics at all. These days, modifications are rare because all grey coatings for actual combat operations are RAM (Radar Absorbing Material) and thus promote stealth to sensors. Because it's imbued with RAM performing material, the colors allowed are highly restricted by function, its very hard to make RAM in a form of Yellow or Red without the Yellow or Red dyes having materials that are highly reflective.

there's not too much fuel that is exposed to any potential discharge, and i believe jet fuel isn't easily ignited. if it does ignite the air will carry it away and it wont spread to the rest of the fuel, plus im not sure how much oxygen is in the fuel tanks, maybe it all gets flushed out with vapors or something
