Honestly I like the Corona more. It's just comfortable in the hand and cuts well. The steel the blade is made from is exactly the same, I've now had a Corona folder for years and this summer I used it to process 2 full trees (diameter 18 inches) and it's honestly just as sharp as I got it... Personally I like bucksaws more where they can be used as the blade is thinner, but the technique on a pull saw is more... forgiving I would say. Easier for a novice to use. Also the Silky costs 3x as much as the Corona brand for the same tool. Just saying, but with how long these last I'd rather have the 7 inch Corona for my pack, a 10 inch for my car, and another spare 10 inch all for the price of one bigboy. I actually have the 18 inch non-folding saw too and despite the fact it comes with no sheath it's a great saw. You can easily harvest decent trees with it.

I have a Silky 180 Fine tooth which I use while camping. It cut's well on 1-3 in branches, but I find it is a lot of work on downed trees, so I've been thinking of getting something a little bigger but still portable. I was looking at the Sven saw, but am hesitant due to the bow design seeming like it would limit where I could use it. For instance, my last camping trip there were no downed trees where we stopped for the night, but there were plenty of pine trees with dead lower limbs. I imagine a bow saw would have been difficult to get in through the initial tangle of small branches. Anyways - I am thinking about a Gomboy 240 - the only concern I have with the Silky saw...and really any folding saw is that my 180 fell apart at the pivot point the very first time I used it. I almost lost the nut. Luckily I noticed because the blade didn't actually fall out and I just happened to glance down and saw the nut laying in the pine needles. The second day it happened again only I was so tired I didn't notice and never found it. It turns out that the bolt is some weird size as well - the Lowes near me didn't carry anything metric or English that would fit the hole, but luckily Silky was very nice and sent me a replacement. Unfortunately, it also got loose after light use. I ended up supergluing the threads as well as the opposite side of the bolt. It seems to be holding and it still folds..albeit with a little more resistance. I'm not really happy about it, especially with the price of the Silky, and I find myself feeling nervous it will fall apart again when I most need it. - Sorry for the long context - but have you seen any similar problems with either your Silky Gomboy 240 or your Corona?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Жыл бұрын
My problem with the Silky 240 is the coarse teeth. I have to put so much of my weight and strength into holding the branch steady that there’s almost nothing left to saw with with the other hand. It seems to be better suited to ripping and cutting punkier woods. I still like the Corona best. No parts have loosened on the Silky.

I have owned and used a corona (several)for yrs. Never once used it to start fire. If i find myself down to char-cloth and only a saw, i should find a new hobby... Silky has a very good chrome plating. Chrome does not produce sparks but does resist rust. I own a silky as well. I have a bias so i let my non outdoorsy wife take both to the yard to trim branches on some cedar. She stole the silky and will not give it back lol. Curve blade for curve blade i thought the silky was "smoother" myself? Dollar for dollar the corona is a fine saw. I can buy 3 for the price of a silky bigboy. But the silky seemed to hold edge better and less effort overall. I am not talking aboutthe gimmicky "outback" silky models either. If Budget would be a big factor, id go with a corona. If i have a choice id buy a silky. From Alaska to Iraq ive never had a bic just "fail" and i am a smoker so i wont be beating my saws anytime soon haha. Good video, odd comparison.

This wasn't a comparable comparison. Your corona had a curved back while your Silky was a flat back. A curved blade Silky definitely cuts faster than a flat blade. I own both so I sort of observed the difference. Maybe I wasn't watching too carefully, but it seemed like you were also striking the Corona harder than the Silky to create the effect that it is a better steel.
