the "secondary position" you were wondering about is for cutting wood directly on the ground. So the blade won't dig into the ground when you cut on an angle. Hope that helps. Thanks

Ive also found the second position to be great for above the head cuts. The second angle helps keep sawdust from falling directly into your face.

The oval hole that you are asking about at 10:30 is meant to provide a place to grip the blade when you are opening the saw. Pinch the hole between your thumb and index finger and pull. It helps when you have wet conditions.

if you are pruning a tree the proper way to saw it is to cut it partway from the bottom and then cut from the top. That way the bark doesn't rip down the tree and damage it. That is what the second position is for. Too make it easer to make that cut from the bottom.

I am a timber framer and I use these saws for cutting joinery. It is great that they make saws with straight blades for wood working. I guess different strokes for different folks.

The F180 will definitely work for most backpacking adventures. It's lighter than the smallest pocketboy. Most saw per oz that silky makes. The big boy is definitely one to own if you want a saw to handle any condition around camp. I often use the 2nd cutting angle when cutting branches over head. It helps with angling the sawdust away from your face.

Hello, nice collection. For many years I have been using Bahco folding saws for wood, model 396 JT with a unidirectional cutting direction and teeth identical to those in Silky. Laplander works worse in wood, but will cut a plastic pipe or animal bone. the large Silky tempts with the convenience of work, but discourages with the fragility of the blade :( In my opinion, the broken tips in the saws disqualify them for field work, even though they are great tools for carpentry. Regards.

The Gomboy 210 and 240 now come in a curved blade as well (they're called the 'pro' versions). Curved def gives more power. Gomboy is the best all-around saw I think: compact for packing, fast for firewood, and throws good sparks off a ferro rod (in fact you can just use a good hard rock, quartz etc. in a pinch since it's high-carbon steel). Yet it also gives a smooth enough cut for woodworking projects. Straight blade might be better if you're using it for carpentry perhaps. Orange handle = curved blade I believe (both curved Gomboys have orange handles, as does the curved Bigboy). Oh, and you don't sharpen these blades, you eventually replace them. I've never met anyone who's had to replace the blade though :)
@ReviewOutdoorGear

The curved blades are only used with large and extra large teeth, which have red or orange handles, respectively.

I love and own about 7 silky saw all folding. Silky can't be beat but their are saws as good at least 1 brand and i own 4 of those.They work on the pull back technique. The name of the saws are Felco. Silky has a larger line of saws but if you like silky add some Felco's to you collection. I'm getting ready to but the Kattenboy. I watch a lot of these guy's doing video's on the saws and I'm surprised that if they would change their technique they would get thru the cut faster. Stihl is also as good but the price on stihl ooch.

The one with larger teeth has a curved blade so it doesn't jump around as much, and the medium teeth and smaller are straight because they have more bite points... that said I prefer the large in general and the curved ones, the more aggressively curved ones are sweet

I have a Silky F-180 and a Gomboy Outback and Bigboy Outback Saws, in addition to a Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet, a Wildlife Hatchet and a Small Forest Axe. I'll take the saw/hatchet/axe combination that best suits my needs. A Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel and a Mora Companion Heavy Duty knife complete the set. You have two different models of BigBoy there. The normal BigBoy has a straight blade. The BigBoy 2000 is the one with the curved blade model. The curved blades tend to be more aggressive as the blade pulls itself into the wood a bit more. They also sell curved blade Gomboys and PorcketBoys. They also sell a fine-tooth version of the F180 with a yellow handle... so not sure how much your color-coding theory holds up. If you want to spend a little more money, you can opt for the "Super Accel" over the Gomboy. It's got an aluminum chassis, so it's lighter than the Gomboy.
@anstef1485
@anstef1485 Жыл бұрын
These saws literally eat wood! The second locking position is very useful when cutting near the ground so you can still use full pulls to cut. Cutting on the pull stroke also reduces the chance of squeezing and bending the blade.

ReviewOutdoorGear , not quite, the curved blade is for pruning usually fruit trees etc either above or below you IE tricky positions being in older fruit trees and such like stretching over on a ladder and the bigger teeth are for wet green wood. A medium teeth is better for drier / harder wood but larger teeth for green fresh branches that need pruning back. Thats why an arborist will have a selection of silkys, Horses for courses and all that 😊. Take care kind regards.

Good review. I am in the market for a new saw and am considering the new big boy expedition series. Is this with the large teeth better than the medium teeth big boy for firewood in the real world? Every man knows there is a discrete and perfect tool for every job, however imho the silky that is the most useful is the gomboy 210 large tooth curved blade. The bigboy is too useless for most jobs as it requires two hands really. The gomboy curved 210 can do almost anything the big boy can. If you learn technique and to "snap pull" the blade for smaller twigs it can do twigs to 5+" trunks. Ig at some point the bigboy does become needed, say over 6" but man you are in chainsaw territory by then.
