Some right royal rigs to help your Accession To The Tone!
Blimey. Here we are during the celebration weekend for the coronation of King Charles III of the United Kingdom. So what better excuse for a royal-themed challenge show?! We must both choose up to five things and one guitar that are either royal- or heraldic-themed… in order to demonstrate some key concepts of guitar tone. What could possibly go right?
Who shall be crowned King Of Tone, and who will be sent to the Tower?
Enjoy the show…

For years, Angry Charlie just had the Electric Mistress on the side. Hidden under the pedal board. They still had the RAT on the board though, i.e., the dodgy brother Andrew. Angry Charlie's second son Harry rebelled and went for a digital model from the USA.

This episode was in parts hilarious and in parts genuinely informative. Mick's reaction to the unveiling (can I say that) of the Electric Mistress was priceless. The age old punishment of deportation! On a serious note, Dan's lesson on pedal gain and amp volume really hit home. I'm forever believing I'm setting pedals to a unity volume with respect to each other and then (not often but sometimes) changing the volume on one of two vastly different amps. Absolutely nothing is the same. Reminded me that while hearing new and innovative pedals is always cool, an element of TPS trouble shooting concepts is invaluable. Thanks, guys.

A lot of these principles have shaped the evolution of my rig over the last few years. The main takeaway I have is that my tone is overall bigger and broader. The how to use the pedals stuff is far more fundamental than which particular device(s) you use. Thanks guys!

If I remember correctly, the swell function plays back "repeats" from each head. So if you engage the swell but have no playback heads selected you will only hear those four singular "repeats." When you engage one or more of the playback heads those four "repeats" will playback through those heads. IOW swell mode is kinda like turning on all four heads in repeat mode.

I played in a heavy, but very dynamic band, playing VERY loudly. Our band was stupid loud. The drive level on my pedal never hit 9 o’clock. The notes would sing/take off just like Dan’s here. Brilliant the relationship between the guitar and amp at those levels. Regal, indeed (fitting today’s theme).

In the mid-late 70’s, I was messing with a Les Paul and my silverface Princeton at home, and decided to send the secondary output of my first-gen Deluxe Memory Man out to one side of the stereo. When you split the Memory Man and turned on the modulation, there was no “swirl” happening inside the pedal- you just got the unaffected sound on one output, and the pitch-shifted sound on the other. That meant that the chorus effect was created acoustically in the room as they blended. As the slowly modulated direct signal from one of my Klipsch corner horns mixed with the slightly-pushed Princeton, it literally made it feel like I was being physically pulled back and forth between the two sources. Mesmerizing…

The playing of God Save the King at the beginning triggered an odd memory. As a person that grew up pre cable tv I watched a lot of reruns of 1960s television. There was an episode of my three sons where they were greeting an exchange student from the uk by playing God Save the Queen on guitars. This surely was post Beatles on Ed Sullivan and the height of the British Invasion. Greetings and salutations from Muscle Shoals Alabama hit recording capital of the world 🗺️ 🎉

I've been on a recent journey to do my first pedal board and making my own cables to the correct length. So any time you're making your own boards, i'm paying close attention and have no idea how you can get them so neat. Quick aside: saw Crowded House in Seattle this week, really cool, but i did think when Neil Finn was changing some of his pedal settings, "thats probably the board Dan made for him". Excellent night of music. Eddie Vedder was sat directly in front of me enjoying it too.

Hey Mick! I think the reason you were having problems with the Boonar before this video was because even though the buffered mode was on, you had it in a true bypass looper. Every time you switched to that loop, no matter if the pedal was on or bypassed the phase would flip. In this video, because it’s not in a loop, the Boonar has a constant phase flip, allowing the humdinger to compensate. I hope this explanation makes sense!
@ThatPedalShow

It does, thank you. Now I’m wondering about analogue dry through, because there’s definitely something weird going on with the phase.

I’ve been gigging with a JTM45 head like that for a while always into a deluxe reverb as the cabinet. I have the same 2061cx cab. Opening the back of the cab / using the JTM45 with an open back was a revelation for me… I thought I heard you guys mention you are moving the head along for a bluesbreaker combo? While that will achieve the same thing, I’d urge you to try that head with any open back cabs you have first. JTM45 into a G12-65 heritage speaker is absolute magic. Edit: forgot to mention my bright cap is clipped and I go into channel I with no jumper.

I will start with my tc electronic Arena reverb, and the "Royal" patch, which is a cathedral algorithm intended to evoke Westminster Abbey. For an amp, a Mesa/Boogie Road King. I'll choose the tc electronic Corona chorus ("corona" means "crown" in Latin, perfect for a coronation chorus). For a boost, the Hamstead Ascent (because HM is ascending to the throne). And for a guitar, the Mayones Regius (Latin, "of or pertaining to a king"). That's five items.

Ah, The Boonar! Love it! Only problem is it hasn't got tap tempo (nor tempo input). Angry Charlie (Prince Charles?) and the Electric Mistress (not to be named), just brilliant Dan!
