These older episodes are the best from 60-85 and off and on after that, in the 90's they started changing and by the 2000's it wasn't the same anymore and I prefer these older ones better.

Absolute classic. A big strike over a broom. All Baldwin had to do was get a new broom. The writers were brilliant at creating engrossing storylines based upon the everyday lives of the working class. Bet Lynch truly was at the peak of her powers. The days when all the queens were female.

It's interesting how the writers changed Jack's character when he became Jack properly. Vera refers to the possibility of him giving her a black eye if she doesn't come home with a wage that week due to the strike. Obviously, domestic violence is always unacceptable, but judging by how their relationship panned out, if either Duckworth was going to have a black eye the other had caused, it would surely be Jack.

Jack was supposed to be a violent lazy drunk, much like Stan Ogden, hence why 2 of their kids were taken into care. Albert use to be a amiable happy go lucky chap, but was turned into a miserable old scrounger

It was implied with Hilda screaming and then running away. Irma laughed and said it was "just like the old days". When asked about her black eye Hilda said that she walked into a door. I think it was just so pervasive in society, it was generally accepted that it could happen at least in stressful situations. A bit like smoking, there would have been people who stopped doing that once the behaviour was vulgarised or demonised. Not illegal until 1991. Ghastly. Xxxxx

In a 1990s episode Jack blamed himself for how Terry turned out and admitted that he had been a terrible husband and father. As I said below re Stan Ogden, domestic violence simply pervaded society like smoking indoors. There would have been those who would have stopped being violent towards spouses once it became vulgarised and demonised.

I loved the factory/strike scenes. Ivy, the bolshi Shop-Steward and downing of tools. Mike, the Capitalist and wet behind the ears Steve. The Rovers clientele winding Alf up about him and Bet living together. More fantastic Oggie scenes and a rare appearance from Bill Waddington prior to his regeneration into Percy Sugden. This is the Street at its pure best, great and unbeatable for acting and writing.

Agree, Rita was hard-faced, cold hearted & treated Mavis terribly. Their relationship was toxic. I have great empathy with Mavis now I rewatch these classic episodes. As a child I found Mavis irritating but with more mature eyes I feel sorry that she had to endure Rita's passive aggressive behaviour...with friends like that who needs enemies! Looking through these last few videos fr 1975 to 85, Bett Lynch ( played by Julie Goodyear) was extraordinarily attractive & Very very pretty Those huge expressive eyes, Beautiful skin & complexion Shape of her face Stacks of silver blonde tresses Lovely shaped lips & mouth Great figure & legs Put together in her prime were Really quite beautiful! I keep marvelling at her clear fine complexion! If i could maybe find one small flaw then i think Julie's teeth could have had cosmetic dentistry on them. It didnt make a titch of difference really to her looks Esp when younger, we were so used to seeing " Bett" as a hard faced, common Barmaid with outrageous outfits, huge hairstyles, comical earrings her trademark, Bett didnt start out as a parody of the 'Dirty Postcard ' Barmaid She, in the early Corries ive just watched, was a very unusual beauty! That i doubt we realised at the time. Combined with Julies great acting, her expressions, the roll of her great big eyes & numerous Faces showed what a character she was RIP Julie Goodyear 💜 Deirdre was also pretty in the early days married to Ray, Expressive eyes, pert nose & a lovely mouth. Gorgeous skin & although a dated style, her hair shone like spun silk, ultra glossy! Pretty Rita ( Barbara Knox) also had beautiful eyes, really spunky Peppy energy, fab singer, great actress figure & was Knock out in her younger days! I still love Renee, though not A classic beauty, she has the most sunny lovely smile 😊 A face that radiates great humour, kindness, care & compassion, Madge Hindle who played Renee had a great figure & hight, super legs & if she had been young in the 2000/2010, she Would have been a very good model! As fashions in model looks are very different from the 1970s & 1980s when "Dolly Bird" looks were vogue. At the begining of the 21stc more unusual looks became the look big fashion houses wanted! Some models, bare faced were NOT typical model girl faces but when made up they were fascinating! So Madge would have looked amazing in todays cosmetics!. Ive chuntered on enough!! I grew up with the earlier ones I recall back to 1961 & the gang Including Ena, Minnie & Martha Uncle Albert, young Ken Barlow & brother David Hilda & Stans daughter Irma & son Trevor, Harry & Concepta Hewitt & daughter Lucille Kens mum & dad, Jack & Annie Walker, Elsie Tanner with kids Dennis& Linda Oh yeah, kens 1st wife Valerie! I noticed when Elsie returned back from her daughters she was remarkably slimmer! I think Pat Phoenix (Elsie) must have gone to a health spa & lost quite an amount of weight She was rather stout previously Not that extra weight detracted from her attractiveness, but she looked amazing upon her return Theres never been such an attractive older woman than Pat She was drop dead gorgeous when young & she was Elsie Tanner, the whole nation was a huge fan. I was amazed when i learned who her 1st husband was, in real life! As a young actress she married a politician called Jim Callahan Jim Callahan went on to become Britain's Prime Minister!!! But our Pat had divorced him before he got to the premier job I cant remember if, like Elsie Pat had another marriage after Jim Callahan, but her last marriage was to Tony Booth Actor ( & activist) Tony Booth used to play the roll in the tv Series " Till Death Do Us Part" As Alf Garnetts son in Law from Liverpool ( Tony was a Liverpuddlian in reality) Then his real life daughter called Cherie Booth was married to our more recent Prime Minister Tony Blair. Although Cheries mum wasnt actress Pat Phoenix Still Pat ( Elsie) had double links To 2 British Prime Ministers Her 1st Husband Jim Callahan And her step daughters husband Tony Blair!!! Pat & Tony were an item for many years & only decided to marry when Pat discovered she had cancer. So sad! Our newspapers front pages announced Elsie Tanner Has Died... Or other such words but i can remember the news headlines in the newspapers & tv! Id love to know if anyone knows Exactly how many of the origional cast & other well loved Characters died & who they were All i know who passed were Pat Phoenix - Elsie Johnny Briggs - Mike Baldwin Julie Goodyear - Bett Lynch Doris Speed - Annie Walker Betty Driver - Betty Turpin Peter Adamson - Len Fairclough Anne Kirkbride - Deirdre Barlow The others were Albert Tatlock Madge Hindel ( Renee) both Jean Alexander ( hilda) & Bernard Youens ( Stan) Eddie, Barbara Knox, Eileen Darbyshire ( i think) Mavis Reilly ( ?) I think i did see that only Gail, Ken & ...? Another of the origionals were still alive as of today. Also that beloved rogue & street cred Susie Birchall played by Cheryl Murray ( i think) did she go on to other parts & roles or did she finish with acting Its just that i never heard of her in any other role than Susie & she was really very good in that part. She was very cute & pretty & as ive a good eye for spotting actors from old roles when younger then they appear in bigger roles or film parts later in life. But ive never seen Cheryl nor recognised her name in any other programmes or series on TV. If anyone knows id be happy to know! Thanks 🇬🇧👧

Not sure where you got the info on James Callaghan from. Pat Phoenix and he were never married. He married his wife, Audrey, in 1938. They were married until her death in 2005, 19 years after Pat Phoenix died.
