This reminds me of a joke my grandfather used to say: A guy went to his neighbor's house and there was rainwater coming in through a hole in the roof, so he asked why he doesn't fix it. And the neighbor said "It's raining out, I can't fix it now". So he asked why he doesn't fix it when it's not raining out, and he said "Well, when it's not raining out there isn't water coming in, so I'm not worried about it...".

With myself working in a grocery store, and my partner currently for a pizza chain, I have never been more acutely aware of our safety than during this. I've been physically threatened more than once over shortages in the store I work in, and cursed/verbally threatened more than I'd care to count. My partner is put at risk with every house he has to deliver to, and that's in tandem with the "normal" issues with delivery. On top of that, customers have coughed and/or sneezed on us more than we'd probably admit. And tbh, suddenly being referred to as "essential work" within the past month has me extremely conflicted. On one hand, I completely see the reasoning. People need to be able to eat, and we're both doing our part in that. But, on the other, these are a lot of the same people who, pre-Covid, called people with jobs like mine & my partner's "unskilled", "lazy", and would berate us for not having "real jobs" while simultaneously saying that we don't deserve an adequate and livable wage for what we do.

Even better, Wendy's was given a loan from the government to give out "bonuses" to their workers, and if they didn't give us the bonus, they'd have to pay it back, so yesterday I got my "bonus" for risking my health for a shit company and it was only 140$ because they chose to pay us based off of ONE week of work, instead of the now months we've been working during this. For fuck's sake, if you're not an essential worker and you're going through a drive through at least put fucking masks and gloves on.

Just a quick point: Masks yes, gloves no. Gloves do nothing but transfer contamination from one surface to another. You do not contract COVID through the skin on your hands. Hand sanitiser is not designed to be used on latex, it is designed to be used on skin. It can actually degrade the latex and make it more prone to transfer infection. As well as a mask everyone should be carrying some sort hand sanitiser. Gloves should not be worn outside of healthcare settings (where there are very strict procedures, training, and guidelines/indications for PPE) unless dealing with specific risks like chemical exposure or blood/body fluid exposure. Just wash and sanitise your hands like crazy. To protect yourself, and protect others. All gloves do is prevent people from practicing correct hand hygiene.

@Julie W. It's a trade off. Should I be lucky enough not to get sick or unemployed, even the better, someone else will profit from the social net...we call it a community of solidarity.

There is an iceberg but we didn't hit the iceberg. We hit the iceberg, but the damage will be repaired very shortly. The iceberg is a Chinese iceberg. We are taking on water but every passenger who wants a lifeboat can get a lifeboat, and they are beautiful lifeboats. Look, passengers need to ask nicely for the lifeboats if they want them. We don't have any lifeboats, we're not lifeboat distributors. Passengers should have planned for icebergs and brought their own lifeboats. I really don't think we need that many lifeboats. We have lifeboats and they're supposed to be our lifeboats, not the passengers' lifeboats. The lifeboats were left on shore by the last captain of this ship. Nobody could have foreseen the iceberg. And despite the fact that it's very unlikely any of us, rural, YT commenter, random person on street, will actually ever be rich enough to any of those policies to apply. She has one child who is severely autistic and is mostly nonverbal. She spent her days locked in her room barely able to lift her phone to send a text. Meanwhile, her boss is trying to send over patient paperwork for her to work on. Apparently, our time off the clock is never really our own. She was expected to be back in the store TREATING PEOPLE whilst still being infected not three days later after her initial fever. I myself got a low grade fever just after she went on sick leave. I had been treated by that nurse two days prior and so I was understandably nervous. Hours ahead of my shift and tried to call in sick. I hadn't called in once in 7 years, so I figured that to be on the safe side I needed to stay home and wait it out. However, my boss told me that there wasn't anyone who could take my place and that he would only come in if my fever spiked. So, I went in. I needed the money and I certainly don't want to risk any retaliation. As an aside, I have sold very little of what constitutes as essential goods. Mostly, I've sold hair dye, cosmetics and liquor. I've had such an uptick in criminal activity that in the last 7 days I've had to call out police 4 times. I don't know. Some people recover quickly, others slowly. I’m rewatching all the segments where Covid is the main story. This one reminded me of something. I work in healthcare (front desk receptionist I’m not a hero). I used to work Monday nights were we saw patients with symptoms of Covid for testing. I was actively exposing myself to them. I did have the proper PPE on (double masked, googles, and plastic shields between me and the patients) and I was sanitizing once an hour during that 3 hour overtime shift and patients were not allowed to come within 6 feet of me. I NEVER GOT COVID! I am extremely lucky. Also my employer gave us extra money in our holiday bonus. I’m talking hundreds of dollars for me alone! I told my bf that I wasn’t doing anything special and that I’m just happy to help. He then told me that I am “an essential worker and I am putting my life on the line to help these people. The bonus I got is also kinda hazard pay.” I started crying because I never thought of it that way. I know it sounds stupid because of what I did but still. My nurses and providers had more contact with those patients then me. I’m just up front checking people in and out. It never scared me because I knew I was protected.

They've also already told us that we won't get pay raises next year because of the state budget cuts. My favorite thing about this piece is how Judith Kudlow's still life work is actually very good 😂
@Kevin_Williamson4 жыл бұрын
The question that hit me during the Kudlow section was, "Why does his wife need to apply for assistance?" When you're married to a wealthy man, is your painting hobby really in danger of collapsing? How many employees is she supporting in her enterprise? All these unfortunate people losing their job-based health insurance really drives home a point Bernie has been making in favor of Medicare For All. Lotta people wishing we had that now. The EMT brought up a point that Biden and others really need to address. The ACA isn't providing affordable insurance. And it needs to close the Medicaid loophole. In my (Red) state, they never expanded Medicaid under the ACA. And the law stipulates that people who are poor don't qualify for help with premiums because they supposedly qualify for Medicaid that we don't get. So I'm in the void where I can't have either premium assistance or Medicaid. And I can't afford $200+ a month premiums for the most basic health insurance. Even with premium assistance, all my state offers on the exchange is a single carrier with expensive insurance. The fact that so many people are in fear of losing everything within a month of losing their jobs shows the lie being spread that we have had a robust economy. Sure, it's been great for rich folks. But the average American has been getting by on dreams and credit.
@sirmoonslosthismind4 жыл бұрын
first, we have to understand how we got here. the affordable care act REQUIRES medicaid expansion in every state. the supreme court struck it down because they're right-wing assholes with no respect for laws that might help people. so obama and democrats can't be faulted for a problem that did not exist in the bill they passed, but was created by the supreme court. then, what's the path forward? how do we fill in the gaps, get everyone coverage, and thus bring down costs? well, if the supreme court won't let us expand medicaid across the board, the next step is the public option. a government-run generally available health insurance system was a little controversial in the democratic party of 2009, but the naysayers in the party have been forced to concede that it's now the least we can do. we need to cover people who can't afford private coverage, in order to ensure everyone is covered and bring down costs across the board. if the republican supreme court won't let us expand medicaid, and private insurers can't or won't provide coverage that is sufficiently affordable, then there is no other path. whether that public option eventually grows to cover everyone and all but replace the existing insurance market, as some democrats would like, remains to be seen.
@EnglishMike4 жыл бұрын
"The ACA isn't providing affordable insurance." Actually it is, but in a narrow range of income. If you're earning less than $20k/year (but over the minimum of $12k), you can find plans that have low premiums and low deductibles, though it depends on where you live. Even if you're earning $30k/year the subsidies are substantial, but the deductibles can be high. For example, I managed to find an ACA plan for $80/month (after subsidy), with an out of pocket maximum of $8K. At my age (mid-50s) without the ACA, I would be paying a lot more than that, and the plan would be much lower quality too. I agree the Medicaid gap should never have been allowed. I also agree that without the subsidies, the plans are expensive, so you don't get much relief if you're earning over $50k/year. I believe some form of national healthcare system is the way to go -- every other country in the world that can afford one, has one -- but the ACA is better than nothing, not that it's much comfort in your situation.
@Kevin_Williamson4 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishMike -- in other words.....it's affordable if you can afford it? And if you live in the right place to find a decent plan? When I said not providing affordable insurance, I meant to everyone. I guess I needed to stipulate that to prevent the endless caveats. Though I was thinking that was implied in the context. Guess not.

@Liza Tanzawa your feelings are contradicted by the facts. the swing vote in the senate was joe lieberman. go look him up if you're unfamiliar. with every republican in opposition, nothing could pass without lieberman's vote. he is the reason there is no public option in the affordable care act. you may fault obama's tactics, you may cite his inexperience, but you may NOT call him a liar. obama is a good man and also a good politician, and that's difficult to do.

One of the many reasons I roll my eyes when I see or hear 'the USA is the best country in the world' claims by inhabitants. I just can't believe this. I used to laugh about this country - still do - but now I just really feel sad for the majority. Your government doesn't have any empathetic heart, polluted by corporate and egoistic greed. HOW can you be against universal healthcare? And it shocks me every time to see how politics is like rooting for a sportsteam, it doesn't matter what they do you stay red or blue. It's pretty funny when some regular middle class living in a "shithole" country fares better than some middle class in a "richest" country in the world.

The truth - which is most of the Covid 19 deaths could and should have been prevented - almost always leaks out. Good luck to you, and to all your patients! I'm an EMT. It's nice to have some food ready for us in the EMS room. It really is. It means we don't have to go elsewhere for food and increase our risk of catching OR spreading the virus while on shift. It would be nicer if I don't have to keep using the same N-95 indefinitely, but supplies are tight. It would be really nice if staff in nursing homes and other facilities who HAVE MASKS would wear them correctly, thereby reducing our risk when we respond to calls for their residents in homes with multiple cases of COVID-19. It would be nice if we got paid enough that we didn't feel like we need to work multiple jobs with overtime every week. It would be great if we could leave our uniforms at the station to be cleaned and sanitized for us, and change into clean clothes before going home to our families. It would be nice if our leadership understood epidemiology, viral load, toxicology (for the sanitizers we use), and routes of transmission better. But here's the scoop: people love to sing our praises in an emergency. But when we ask for better compensation or equipment, we're leeches on the suffering taxpayers. A local EMT/FF just died of COVID-19 today. He's going to be the first of many. I've done test swabs on members of my own EMS service, and yes, they're coming up positive. Hospital workers are dying. My wife works at a hospital (laboratory) and she was given ONE mask, not even a good one. At least some friends were able to help us get some real masks for her. Someone asked how I'm hanging in there. I said, "Coffee in the morning, whiskey at night, and dark humor between the two." Tonight, I'm drinking my good Scotch because if I catch this and die, I don't want to leave any of the good stuff in the bottle. But I should be fair... I'm also surviving on having my favorite political comedians rip this shit apart. Keep it up, John Oliver. You, Stephen Colbert, and Trevor Noah are helping me keep what scraps of sanity I have left. I'll make a deal with you - I won't quit if you don't quit. Deal?
