Let me tell you as an "essential" worker , John covering this subject makes me feel more sane because the amount of people not taking this seriously only proves how selfish people can be. I am a 26 year old male working at a liquor store in the Dallas area and the way people have been acting about it had made me utterly infuriated. I wipe down my counters and cooler doors and the main entrance and despite that I've had people (customers) make fun of me for it. The worst part is I found out recently that one of my favorite customers passed away due to COVID-19 because her husband came into my store and told me what had happened. Retail in general is a nightmare and yes I want things to go back to normal too but cmon people. WAKE UP.

To whom it may concern: I am an E.R. Nurse. My wife is an anesthesiologist. Two of my colleagues, in their mid-30’s and otherwise healthy, are currently in The ICU on ventilators. Both of them are younger and healthier than I am. Everyday, I go to work and walk into an environment that has been vastly changed from it’s previous condintion a month and a half ago. The halls of my institution are thronged with people afflicted with this virus. We do not have the proper equipment necessary to protect ourselves from contracting horrible pathogen ourselves. As a result, I am being asked, even expected, to do things that place my life and the lives of the people that I love at risk. I am tired just typing this. I am desperately tired of trying to communicate the urgency of this situation to people who have no grasp of what is actually transpiring here, yet feel so entirely self-assured in their certainty that ‘it’s just the flu’ or whatever else ignorant opinion they might cleave to. It feels like an empty endeavor, like tragically wasted time and effort, to try and explain what it is factually transpiring here. I want to scream expletives. I want to force these people to walk into work with me, wearing a week old N95 that common sense states should’ve beed discarded after its first use; no gowns to protect my skin, rationing gloves to protect my hands, afraid to eat or drink for twelve and a half hours, teetering from exhaustion, desperately trying to resuscitate your mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daily...every day. At the end of the day I am afraid to touch my wife and she, in turn, after spending the large part of her day placing the breathing tubes into the airways of the infected, is equally terrified of touching me. So, we sleep our scant few nightmare raddled hours in separate beds, restlessly dreaming of going to work and seeing my wife on a gurney. This is my first day off of five workdays in a row. I am going to go out and sit in the sun for a minute. I wish I had the strength to say more, but I am too tired.

Problem is the common enemy is only threatening some of us. All those people in power have access and the funds available to the healthcare they need to stay alive during this pandemic. This problem isn't real TO THEM. They don't care if it hurts the public they are responsible for as long as they can make money from it, or they can win the vote of the people leftover so they can continue to make money from it. They've never cared about us regular people but half of Americans can ignore that because they don't care about anybody but themselves. If people could learn to actually care about their fellow Americans AT LEAST then we wouldn't allow these people to remain in power because every single thing they do is designed to get them as much money and power as possible.

it has always been weird. Read up on the dark ages... People are clowns and easily manipulated. A small example: you invaded Afghanistan, because Bin Laden - a Saudi, committed crimes while hiding in the mountains there. US intelligence found out Saudi Arabia funded 9-11, but obscured it. The conspiracy theories around it are somewhat exaggerated, but its fishy all 'round. Iraq, similar story. Vietnam and nearly every intervention in between as well. Yet the US always remains the greatest nation in the world: Americans don't want to know about how they are getting duped. People in general won't, but the US is a master in such deceit. Just ask the NSA... At any rate, the US has been kooky for all of its existence. Apparently it takes losing thousands of lives and billions of dollars in a futile war against Iran (which used to be Persia - might be worth reading up on that too...) an orange and a pandemic event to become slightly aware of how you're getting screwed around. And still, it's a British dude that makes you aware of the clusterfucks you obliviously have allowed to be...

Fucking fuck why can't you see that this is about more than life and death? There are only so many doctors and nurses and they are getting sick too. I sincerely hope you open your eyes before it's too late.

George Kafiridis just remember the big bucks you’re putting in pundit pockets every time you blindly believe what they say. Reflect, instead of trying to think of a clever comeback.

Ah, the "Right to Freedom". I literally can't comprehend how people think being free means you have no responsibilities. To be free means to base your decisions on the responsibility for yourself, your social interactions and society. In these hard times, the people who are free are the ones responsible enough to realize that staying home and protecting the vulnerable is something they need to do and not something that was forced by the government, etc.

Αλέξανδρος Αποστολάκης they were literally talking about bringing in the national guard and going into martial law to enforce the stay at home order from the government, that also ordered the shut down of all nonessential business, with nary a word from the people. If you can’t see how tyrannical our government is becoming then you sir should research a little more. Some states are also in talks of suspending constitutional rights.

It is a typical American sentiment that negative freedoms suffice, and that positive freedom is pure evil.

The problem is weighing the harmful economic effects resulting from these government lockdown policies which is strongly interconnected with health. Any epidemiologist will tell you about the social determinants of health and if government action destroys an economy and millions go on unemployment it would translate into worse health outcomes (suicide, substance abuse, domestic violence, cancellation of procedures for chronic diseases etc.). With more studies testing antibodies for COVID coming out it looks like the mortality rate (case fatality rate) is 0.5% (Search for Santa Clara and Chelsea, Massachusetts studies) which doesn't justify taking peoples rights away in my opinion. Sweden, Japan, S.Korea are also good examples of countries that didn't respond with draconian measures which we can compare to later when we get more data. Do you believe in any line beyond which the government has gone too far in taking away civil liberties? To what extent do you care about people's freedoms and do you not see this as a significant moral issue? I understand we want to care for the elderly and we can certainly have some measures in place to protect them but when does this go too far or how many deaths is 'too much', bearing in mind that we live in a world of risks with diseases like influenza every year which can kill up to 500,000 world wide such as in the severe 2009 swine flu pandemic (look up the stats on that pandemic). Should we shut down the economy and peoples rights every time something like this happens?

Anybody who ever read Stan Lee's Marvel Comics will tell you With Great Power----Or Great Freedom-----Comes Great Responsibility.

@@Medhead101 Japan has admited to doing a poor job and Sweden has admited to failing to the elderly as the soft measures turned homes into morgues with waiting rooms. S. Korea's approach worked only because they started early and did it properly, with years of preparation for the next epidemic after MERS. The main issue with the U.S.'s handling is that "catching up" needs measures far more strict than doing things right, or at least trying from the get go.
