Clinical dietitian here-years ago when working in hospitals I covered heart transplant unit for regular dietitian; we had a transplant patient that had been in there for months, not really getting worse but definitely not able to improve either. Once I got the weekend warrior residents to stop messing with my tube feeding every week (!) started getting labs on vitamin levels-shocker he had essentially zero D3 levels - started supplementing at a high rate and within a week he was off vent, starting PT and and an oral diet!!! It was shocking how fast his recovery was. The med director of the nursing homes i work with has gotten every resident on Vit D3 if not already and checking levels (if not checked within past 6 months).

@@elainehumphrey6021 We have also been taking almost the same supplements (thank you MedCram!!!), and the whole family also got Covid recently through a visiting friend from the Balkans, but this is the part where we all get lost: should we continue taking Vitamin D3 or not? We've been taking 6000iu (three pills a day), and a number of integrative medicine sites that we follow say one should discontinue taking it, once positive. A doctor friend of ours (as we've been left at our own mercy by our doctors who had nothing to say except "monitor yourselves.") also added that we should taking Vitamin C (1000mg, 3-4 times a day), as it's not functional once positive. I've been taking vitamin D3 supplement for almost 2 months now. Mainly 2000 IU every day, sometimes 4000 (2 pills) and I take at least 20 minutes of good sun every other day when I go out for a run. My roommate was tested positive for covid and had symptoms but he didn't say anything until he was ordered to stay home. Technically I was exposed for weeks since we share some areas of the house. I felt some palpitations every once in a while and I didn't have the same endurance running. This lasted maybe for a week. I got tested and it came negative. I have my doubts about that test but I attribute my good health and possible fast healing to my daily intake of Vitamin D3, C , B-complex and zinc along with a diet rich in vegetables and outdoors physical training. I am in my 40's. As soon as I knew about my roommate's results I recommended him to start taking vitamin D3 and he did. His condition improved in a few days. He also was seeing a doctor and was taking some steroids. I can tell Vitamin D3 does have a positive effect in preventing, managing symptoms and the outcome of exposure to the virus. Greetings from Texas.

As important as Vit D is for your health, it seems there needs to be an easier way to get tested. Someone needs to invent a product that can be affordable enough for the general population to use on a daily basis over a course of a 2 week window to figure out how to adjust your intake needs. Most people are just shooting in the dark on supplements and sun exposure and have ZERO idea on where they actually stand. And it is vital to have the proper levels. This would also save a lot of money for health care cost to society overall. Not sure it can be done but there is a huge need IMO.

You may be interested that Victoria in Australia has the highest rate of Vitamin D deficiency in the country (49%). It is also the only state in Australia that is having a Covid-19 problem and is the source of infections for a minor outbreak in NSW. During the 'first wave' they had a lot of fast growing clusters we are seeing the same now ('second wave') despite a 'Level 3' lockdown on the whole of Melbourne. See: www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Lookup/4364.0.55.006Chapter2002011-12 . graph 'Vitamin D deficiency in winter by state and territory, 2011-12'.

@waycam774 жыл бұрын
I agree with your Vit D connection to Vic... Winter temperatures forces people to cover up, stay indoors and the suns position mean less UV-B saturation... However stage 3 lockdown is only a week old, you got to take into account incubation period(5-7 days) + time for antigen tests to reveal results(2-4 days). The R nought value should begin to drop in the second week. But your general message is correct, Melbourne and Tasmania are more vulnerable than the rest of Australia.
@PaulWilliamson14 жыл бұрын
There is also this 'Differences were also seen across remoteness areas, with Vitamin D deficiency being more common among those living in Major cities (27%) compared with those living in Inner regional (16%), Outer regional (13%) and Remote areas (9%).' from the reference above which makes Melbourne (the major centre of spread) the highest.
@lewisfletcher8494 жыл бұрын
You are right. We Victorians need to supplement with D but a deficiency is not the reason behind our current outbreak. That is structurally caused but I’m absolutely certain that the no’s of this second peak (not wave) May be lower and also of lesser severity if immune systems were at optimal levels.

Thank God! The timing of me finding your presentation have been a blessing. My family and I supplement our diet with Vit C on a daily basis due to seasonal allergies. However just a week ago, our son was suspected to have been exposed to the Cov-19 virus from a coworker. I had just listened to your presentation on some additional supplements that may aid the immune system. We started taking everything except Quercetin since it had to be ordered. His symptoms have been short-lived (less than a week of low fever, muscle aches, head pressure, fatigue), praise God and thank you, sir for your intelligence and willingness to educate.

@@TyJoneZs 1000iu is fine but you may need to take a higher dose to get your levels up first and then maintain it with 1000iu per day. I would recommend having your levels checked now and then in three months time. the amount people need varies greatly depending on any ongoing illness that they suffer from. Auto immune disorders for instance deplete your vitamin levels faster than if you had none.

Mike Holick as usual has hit the nail squarely on the head with this review. May I respectfully suggest that we do NOT require randomized controlled trials to support the idea that every PERSON should have good vitamin D NUTRITION. Vitamin D3 is NOT a medication with potential adverse side effect. Only the very rare patient who has sarcoidosis needs to be concerned with vitamin D supplementation causing hypercalcemia. No case of vitamin D toxicity or an increase in any other adverse event has been reported at a dosage below 20,000 IU per day, so there is no worry with taking 5000 IU daily, or even 10,000 IU during a few days of respiratory illness or while correcting an initial deficiency. In my opinion the public health authorities (no names mentioned, but CDC, WHO, NIH come to mind) have been brutally negligent in not informing the public of this fact. A few prospective randomized clinical trials of vitamin D have failed to show benefit, or in one case seemed to show increased falls in the elderly. These failed trials have essentially all used intermittent high doses of vitamin D rather than daily dosing, suggesting that part of the benefit of vitamin D requires the steady presence of a good level of cholecalciferol itself, and that not all effects are carried out through the classical activation sequence: liver--> kidney --> 1,25(OH)2D. Keep up the good work, my friend! L. E. Mallette, MD, PhD

65 YO female here, diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes eight years ago. I have always taken supplements and keep my Vit D levels in high- normal range and test several times a year. I also take NAC, zinc, quercetin , alpha lipoic acid, Berberine and a plethora of other supplements. I have not had any upper respiratory illness in a decade ( basically started social distancing when I was diagnosed with diabetes) and maintain an A1C around 5. Keto diet helps! Vitamin D is so important to maintaining overall health, including mental health. Inexpensive blood test and I recommend everyone knowing their level and taking a quality supplement if needed along with K2 or K7 to help with absorption.

The research from the “Blue zones” teaches us that we are meant to be physically active outside for most of the day in addition to eating natural foods. Our current lifestyle ( most of us) is antithetical to this. Given the benefits of vitamin D and exercise for depression. This lifestyle keeps us healthy and happy for many years.

Great update but your advice at the end to rely on ones physician for advice on nutrition is like the blind asking the blind for directions to Carnegie Hall. It’s very simple, nutrition needs to become a subspecialty and be able to have insurance codes for payment to physicians for their advice, then there will be interest in the science of good and customized nutrition advice for each individual. Every GP physician needs to know more about the biochemistry pharmacology and physiologic response to vitamin D ( as a metaphor) than he needs to know same about the newest anti inflammatory or antibiotic or anti reflux medicine, with all due respect.

Re vitamin D levels: there could be a healthy worker type effect. People who are healthier are out of doors more, get more sunshine, and so have more vitamin D. They may be less susceptible to respiratory infections because they are healthier, and their increased level of vitamin D may be a correlation rather than causation.

Seeking health.com has pharmaceutical grade supplements and one specific product is vit D K2 at 5000 units. People can start with one every other day or pulse them if they are unsure of their levels. Another great video Dr. Seheult, My thoughts: One reason for VIt D. insufficiency is caused by the recommendation to use sunscreen when out in the sun. Also, I watch Dr. Eric Berg on YT, and he recommends K2 when taking Vit D3 so calcium will go into the bone and not the soft tissue (arteries for example). His supplements (I take them) are 10,000 IU of D3 and 100 mcg of K2, he claims this is the correct ratio. And I found out that 10,00 IU of Vit D3 isn't really a lot compared to 10-20 minutes in the mid-day sun. Usual disclaimers: I am a non-medial layperson and I have no affiliation with Dr. Berg or his nutritional company other than being a customer.

VDR down regulation. That's epigemonic. I still disagree with using a bolus during acute illness especially during a cytokine storm. Instead 10K units daily only if hospitalized. Epigenomics. Marshall protocol discusses this. (I've had some people taking vit D 5000 units a day and the level only gets to low normal). If you look back into previous video comments on med cram, calcitriol is a VDR agonist for instance, you'll find some great research on what is presented here. This is a great paper to highlight, MedCram. Several viruses and parasites often have some association with fat soluble vitamin deficiencies.

I'm not sure what my original Vit D level was, but since I've never taken Vit D except for thos 2 times. After 7 weeks on 5,000 iu's, i got tested and it was 35. I have 8 comorbidities than coukd cause me to die from Covid19, so I need to make it higher faster and Dr Berg on YT said that 10,000/day is not dangerous. I've been thinking that i should take more Vit D, but idk. Do you know anything about this?

I have a feeling daily dose is SUPER variable depending on each person. I have ulcerative colitis and all my GI doctors always had me taking Vit D. Never seemed to do anything. Finally, last Spring, I ended up getting a new family doctor, and for my first visit she had a lot of bloodwork done. Only things out of ideal range were my Vitamin D and B12. Not deficient, just on the lower side. I was also struggling with my UC flaring up from stress at work. So I was like, "FINE, I'll take a LOT of vitamin D until I get my range into upper normal!" I think I was taking something like 20,000iu a day. 10k in the morning and 10k before bed. Within a month my UC was back in TOTAL remission. I could not believe it. I didn't want to overdose, so I dropped down to 5,000iu a day and my UC started flaring up again. Tests also have kind of shown I really need to be taking 20,000-30,000iu a DAY just to be in middle/upper normal range, which seems insane, but hey, it's cheap and it works. Very happy about that discovery and my new doctor being super into the science.

I got on the Vitamin D wagon a few years ago, during the winter months in northern US, my levels would readily drop to below 17-18 ng/mL, just before my annual November/December/January colds would arrive (I don't get the flu shot and I also don't catch the flu either since most people get the shot and I am thereby protected via herd immunity most years). Although Bolus dosing has not been shown to have a protective effect, for an obese darker skinned person like myself, getting on a weekly 50K IU dosing was necessary to make a difference. So I kept doing that for a month every winter, but did not actually ever develop a daily supplement habit otherwise. I haven't had a single respiratory infection, despite spending so much time on public transport and having a desk (unhealthy) job and being super unhealthy, not even a single cold, in 2 years. I have gone through some serious stressful travel and move situations that should have left my immune system pretty exposed, but nope, not a single respiratory infection since July 2018. However, I am also a germaphobe, do not have children, do not share my room with anyone, and I also have a diet rich in Vitamin C and I love fatty raw fish (tuna cans) and have milk and cereal multiple times a week. But I also have pre-existing conditions and happen to be immunocompromised.
