I wonder if you could up set the bar before you start to flatten it. It would give you a thicker end and might give you more material to work with in the end. Just a thought. What you made works.
@adamh843 Жыл бұрын
howdy, CK. thanks for thinking about the spoon. the flat steel sounds promising. i know you're gonna dial that in first. if it works out, i'm hoping you'll make a spoon at one end and fork on the other. i think flat steel would allow you to still make a hook too...at the fork end...if you split the steel as if you were gonna make a 3 pronged fork, the middle "prong" can be bent over for the hook. of course, if the hook is for lifting pot lids, etc. maybe make the actual fork prongs a little shorter than your devilish, frontier forks. just some thoughts from a random dude on the internet with no experience whatsoever!

Hey, Shawn! Great vid. It's good to see you building an inventory. I understand the desire to use 5/16" material. How about if you cut your blank an inch longer and then upset the spoon bowl-end to gain more material for shaping the bowl?

Dude, love your content. I am a professional blacksmith, and I just want to give you a quick pointer: cut your material a half inch longer, then upset the spoon end. That will give you enough material to make your spoon end. Keep on doing your thing. Love following your story.

I enjoy these videos. I've been smithing for a couple of years now. I would like to give you just a couple of suggestions. 1- upset the end of the spoon that way it'll give you more material to move around and work with. 2- turn your hammer around and use your cross peen. That will help spread the material out without making it so thin. Thank you for videos and keep up the great work!

Really appreciate these kinds of videos. I watched one where you made a frying pan from one you already had, just a different material. I feel the world, and America in general, has lost the art of making things, especially those that last. Bringing back these kinds of crafts to a new generation and the generations to come - we really need that. So, thank you for taking the considerable time to not only make this stuff, but to film and edit it so that we can sit back and watch how it's done. Your videos are geared to those who really want to make things happen; and the speed at which you film the process supports greatly in the learning process. I just hope people watching realize that it takes much longer than is shown. Most things do; but we've gotten this warped sense of how long things really take. Great stuff as always, DM

If you use flat stock . You can fold a bit of the end back on to it's self and pound it flat ...you can use a swage for a spoon shape and use in combination a stamp that fits the spoon concavity and with one or two strikes you can get a spoon shape fast ....if you fold a bit of the end you can increase your material to shape a wider spoon.
@capntexas Жыл бұрын

I love seeing the forging videos! I don't have a lot of practical experience forging at the moment but one thing that might help get a result closer to what you are looking for is to start with a bar a bit longer than you want and upset the scoop end of the spoon to thicken it up so that it can be pounded out wider
@jasonsummit1885 Жыл бұрын
If you make another one, try upsetting the end before flattening to make a wider spoon head.

Cast them out of old steel cans. Make a mould with five of them per pour and then clean up on the buffer. Cheap, quick and easier. They'll look like those and weigh a bit less but still shovel food in your gob or stir coffee. I started my Regular Army career as a 16 year old Fitting and Turning Apprentice and we did blacksmithing so I know the time, effort and skill you put into that spoon.
