I thought of They Live while watching this as well, but I feel like making the thing that lets you see the truth, or whatever, a pill as opposed to something benign, like sunglasses, is that the scene where the main character tries to get someone else to see what they see becomes a lot more understandable when it's, y'know, some random pills from who knows where.

Well yeah because the plot device in They Live are glasses that can verifiably let people see the truth without committing to taking a drug. It's way easier for the lead character to understand and communicate what he's seeing; Though that doesn't always work cue the scene with Keith David. The "framing" has entirely to do with the protagonists own knowledge of the situation they're in and their ability to communicate that to other characters. It's hard to make someone take a pill, easy to get them to put on glasses.

Honestly does recall everything from They Live for me. But it feels a bit more modern I think? I like how it carries over the major themes and plot of that feature length film, but in a more direct, focused bite of cinema. I feel like it rounds out that movies themes and structure in just under 14 minutes. I'm impressed. Good watch!

This is a common trope called the Schizophrenic Hero, where one person or a small minority realizes that a paranoid fantasy is actually reality, and most people can't see it. It works well because it suggests an average person can be a secret hero, that the oppressive normal order can be subverted, and that there's a way to cheat to win and escape the drudgery of daily life. "They Live" is an obvious example, but Stephen King's done it, too, and there's "The Matrix" and "Dark City" and so on. This is a nice version, as well.

They aren't better quality; they are entirely different. Longer films don't have the luxury of having such exciting pacing; you're comparing apples and oranges. A quality feature length movie can be just as good, just in an entirely different way. To say this is objectively better than a quality full length movie is false; the issue is that many full length movies are not of that quality to begin with; that isn't a full length movie problem inherently. I can find crappy short movies as well.
