Thank you for your video. I know this video is not about my vehicle but since you seem extremely knowledgeable, I thought I would ask a question. Let me preface my question with what is happening. I have a 2008 Tundra, 5.7. My 4wd initially was having a problem unlocking from 4Lo, to get it to disengage I would have turn the engine off and back on again. It has just started doing the same on 4Hi. I pulled the truck into my garage while it was in 2wd, put jackstands under all four wheels, pulled both actuator motors off, cleaned them, tested the motors and both motors ran fine. I have pushed both actuator rods back into the transfer case as far as they would go then I pulled them out approximately 2.5 mm, this was pointed out in other KZbin videos as being the 2wd setting for the actuator. I put both motors back on and I still had the flashing 4 Hi lights. I pulled the motors off again, pulled actuator rods as far out as they would pull, and then pushed them back in as far as they would go, replaced the motors, and set the gears with what I have learned, via KZbin, is the proper timing for 2wd , turned the front and rear driveshafts both forward and Reverse. When I started the engine, I shifted the transmission to neutral, turned on the 4wd to Hi and it was working, both rear wheels and right front wheel were spinning, but would not engage into 4 Lo. When I shifted back to Reverse there was a horrible grinding of the gears, I shifted through Reverse into Park and the grinding stopped. I adjusted the 4 Lo actuator rod again to 5mm out, this setting came from a new AISIN SAT-013 actuator I purchased, I took the covers off to look at how far beyond the teeth the rods in a new actuator were set. I replaced the 4 Lo motor, started the engine, 4 Hi light is flashing, shifted transmission to neutral and turned the 4wd shift knob to Hi, it does not engage. Shifted transmission back to Reverse, grinding noise has stopped in Reverse but when I shifted into Park the grinding noise starts. I can turn the engine off, start it back up while in Park and no grinding noise until I shift through Reverse to neutral and back into Park, 4 Hi light is still flashing. When I put the truck in Reverse and Drive and get out of the truck the wheels are no longer spinning while in gear. I turned off the engine and took both motors with gears out again. I tried to pull the actuator rods out to their full extent, and they will not move more than 4-5mm, they appear stuck in the 2wd mode. My questions. 1. Are the actuator rods supposed to move freely when the truck is in Park? 2. If so, mine are stuck and I would like to know what can be done to get them free? 3. If they are not supposed to move freely in Park, will they move freely if I put the truck in neutral and will this help resolve my problem? 4. What are your recommendations if the above does not work? Thanks

I'm having the same issue on my LX570. When I pulled the lower actuator the gears popped out and I lost the timing. I can move the actuator rod in and out in neutral. My rig was stuck in 4 low so after cleaning the actuator contacts, I put the rod back to 4 low position and reinstalled the actuator. Horrible grinding noise on start up. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the timing set properly. Did you ever figure it out?

@@DTM.Desperado I never did figure it out. I spoke with a local transmission shop he the tech said he thought the forks in the transfer case were out of alignment causing it to grind. This was reiterated by a technician who worked for Toyota for 30 years before retiring and opening his own shop. Both recommended I purchase a transfer case from a salvage yard. Eight days later, I admitted defeat, purchased a transfer case with 122K miles on it for $575 and asked them if they new someone who could install it. They gave me the name of a mechanic that worked out of his house, he installed it for $385. I paid an extra $200 for a one year warranty and if anything went wrong they would replace the transfer case and pay up to $1K to have broken one removed and the next one installed. I check with two different shops in town and they both wanted $1200 to remove and replace the transfer case. The retired Toyota tech said that was the price for removing the transfer case, tearing it apart, repairing it, putting it back together and reinstalling it. They were both going to rip me off and any other person coming there that did not know any better.

@fredwallace6190 I appreciate the detailed reply. Mine is stuck in 4 low so it's something to do with the actuator. I'm a mechanic as well and do most things myself. I can't justify the $4500 the dealership quoted just to replace the actuator. I honestly wonder if toyota designed it this way on purpose so they could charge people to drop the transfer case. I don't see why the actuator couldn't have a few pins to attach to the actuator rods instead of having to pull the whole transfer case to get the rods out. Seems like alot of newer cars are like this and shops always want to charge as much as they possible can for labor. $575 for a transfer case isn't too bad, worst case scenario maybe I'll look for a used t-case and swap it myself.

My 2010 Tundra is slightly different, the only thing I can find for mine is if I take the top half of the actuator off, then plug it back in, turn the ignition switch to the on position and it will reposition itself to the 2wd position. Would you agree with this? Thank you.

hey carl! did you get it figured out. ive seen the same video you're talking about. I'm only replacing the top cover. I removed the cap only: left the gears in the acuator body. the only thing in the cap is the motor, no gears. I should be able to simply replace the cap and I should be good, correct? the motor only receives a signal from the contacts that tells it where it is right? Ar Ar is a very good and works very fast!! Thanks guys!

@@carlbdiggs the "hi" side is the top side, correct? please let me know. pricey little boogers, aren't they? please let me know. then you and I need to coordinate a video that clearly and concisely describes the process (and the pitfalls). most of us haven't done this kind of repair before. Ar Ar obviously has and moves with that kind of familiarity. I'm comfortable knowing the the actuator rods are where they need to be. When I started this "project" the vehicle was/is in 2wd/Park. I need one constant and thats it!. when I pulled the original cover off the gears didn't come out but spring tension was released. the gear in the top half was holding tension against the gears in the bottom half. resetting that tension may be difficult. It just occurred to me that releasing the tension MAY have moved the actuator rod. man, I hope not. ive not tried to move the actuator rod thats on the vehicle. have you?, does it move? I don't recall AR AR having that problem. he just starts ripping stuff apart. Oh, I too ordered a new actuator. I took pictures of everything before I started monkeying with it. doesn't seem to have helped. Ive also taken pictures inside the actuator. it (new) didn't seem to be under spring tension when I separated the halves but the actuator rod was not in the same place the one on the vehicle was. I don't think new ones are set at 2wd /park position. THEY SHOULD BE!! or knowing where they were set would help. The only good news is that I have easy access to the top of the actuator because the transfer case is out....aaaaand thats there the problems started. keep me posted please and I will you! Hey Carl! I think the car ArAr is working on is right hand drive. its impossible to orient the gears the way ArAr has on my north American vehicle. it appears right hand drive may change the orientation of the gearing.

There is a video of the 08 tundra and it looks identical. My 07 tundra motor housing and attaching bolts and 5 screws for upper (4hi) and lower (4lo I believe) also look identical. Thanks to this and the 08 video I'll give this a go in my garage when I get back home. In the meantime I better not get stuck! 4hi light just flashes and truck doesn't go into 4hi, or Lo.

Full backward the lower shaft and put the lower motor with correct setting same in my video. The upper shaft put the center teath to the drive gear same as in my Video Hoping gonna be ok.

I pulled my top actuator which was failed when I put it back in, I pressed 4wd and it's locked in 4wd but the light is not on and when I press the button it just flashes.. do I pull the top shaft all the way out to take it out of 4wd
