I have a Catahoula-Vizsla mix and boy oh boy is she sensitive. Best dog I’ve ever had, but you’re absolutely correct that they never forget. She’s initially dominant and non-contact aggressive with other dogs, but once they spend time together, she is a fun-loving playmate. Her behavior is hilarious at times. She wants to rule the dog park, but if she gets chased and another dog catches up, she’ll scream like a little baby.

I’ve met a few, so “never” is a broad statement. My buddy’s dog went after his kid nephew and he picked him up over his head and slammed him to the ground. Follows him everywhere now, doesn’t go after kids or bark at people he should know already. Didn’t teach him heel, didn’t teach him sit. But now he’s the perfect dog 👍

I fed my rescued Catahoula by hand, half of his daily rations, throughout the day. I had him wear an e-collar and rewarded him with special treats when he recalled to the tone. I have only used static shock when he was doing something that could get him killed (chasing vehicles). I sound like I’m going to kill him when I correct his behavior with an “aaakkk” but he responds. He went from ignoring commands to a very happy, obedient dog. He even respects barbed wire fence lines. Be consistent, be fair, and you will have a happy dog who clearly knows what is expected of him/her.I should also add that the dog should have to respond to a command before fed or given a treat. Make them sit on command, wait behind you before going out of a door. Mine even responds to hand signals.

Positive reinforcement alone never worked with my catahoulas. I had to use a strong tone or go grab their collar and show them where I wanted them to go. Now the catahoula puppy I kept is the best dog I've ever had, convinced me to get another one.

Thank you for pointing me in the direction of your other videos. Skye looks like the sister of your dog. Many double merle dogs are identified deaf but not always visually impaired. Skye I know sees but the clarity I am not sure of. She follows her nose so training has been easy in that manner. Some one trained her to bark when she can not see me. That is improving since I do not let her out of her crate unless she is calm. For anyone reading this please find a Catahoula specific rescue or one that is specific to deaf dogs if you feel you must surrender a dog. Deaf dogs are easy to train if you know how. Even easier if you have a hearing dog to help. Double merle gene is recessive. Just like human red heads (recessive gene) the double merle deafness is not always an obvious risk at the time of breeding.

as you said, spanking does NO good. I annoy housemate when I raise my voice at my houla girl, BUT she listens. I've had her since she was 7 weeks old, she's now 4 years old and admittedly she does have some bad habits, but she will still mind me when I raise / deepen my voice.

Thank you for the information. My girl is a year and a half years old. She joined the family a month ago. Normally I would do a great deal of research on a new breed but she came from a high kill shelter. She is deaf and may have vision issues. I would welcome any input on training that is Catahoula specific. I learned from my Australian Shepherds how to direct dogs physically but at 70 lbs it is difficult. I use hand signs and body language to train. Her old family used a shock collar for her constant barking. She is so food driven and learned sit in just a few sessions. She knows to sit to get what she wants, my sign for good and stop. She hardly barks.

It's just like having kids-YOU ARE THE BOSS! I LOVE my dogs, I am not perfect, and I don't always get the reaction I want, but when they step out of line or do something wrong, all I have to do is YELL! I will catch them if they do something really bad or out of line (fight with another dog) and flip them on their back. I will stand over them showing them I am the boss, but never hurting them. When the situation is defused, I will walk away. Then call them to me and love on them...all is forgiven.

The description in this video is quite accurate. Our adopted dog (IGOR---we call him Iggy--now 6 1/2 months old) seems to be mostly Catahoula and he is strong, territorial and can be aggressive toward other dogs if not "socialized" and even then he is a real rough house when he plays (whether with me or other dogs), but a Sheltie (all of 24 lbs!) we have had for a long time is DEFINITELY in charge when it comes to IGOR and the Sheltie does NOT hesitate to "tell Iggy off if/when he gets too pesty or rough. Funny enough, Iggy will run like all git-out from the Sheltie (Sonny) when Sonny gets after him, even though even now he is MUCH bigger-- SONNY IS DA BOSS!! I believe in mostly not getting physical with a dog for discipline unless as a VERY LAST resort, so what I do is to VOICE my displeasure and to sorta poke/rap/tap him on top of the head with ONE FINGER to get the point across when he is being disciplined---and he usually knows why that is happening! He has been quick to learn things...often you only have to present him with a behavior ONCE or TWICE and he's got it. It is important for the dog's owner to be the confident, strong willed and "leader of the pack" in order to be effective as a teacher and be in control of the dogs.That all being said, I'll have to add that the personality of these beasts is great....very friendly and protective of "their pack" which strongly includes me and my wife, yet mellow and easygoing. We just love him, but if you are considering owning a Catahoula, be prepared for high energy and taking them out on "adventures" a BUNCH!

I've been doing everything I did with them, with my female catahoula, blue tick mix and she's doing everything they did. So..... Also, dogs don't hold grudges like people, and when you rub their nose in piss, for pissing in the house, then immediately, >>IMMEDIATELY

E-collar, the tone interrupts the behavior and if they stop, they get a treat. Also time. Your dog is still a puppy. My Catahoula didn’t fully mature until 3.

Yes, try doggy dans training method the online dog trainer. It doesn’t force you dog to follow you as Alpha, it makes them want to follow you as Alpha. There is no hitting or any other way of physical way of harming your dog, which you never should do ever for any reason AT ALL. Its only 5 simple mind games that take a few minutes a day, showing your dog who’s Alpha in your dogs own language.members.theonlinedogtrainer.com/dashboard/

@@ificandoityoucandoit6948 I said the TONE interrupts the behavior. A tone I paired with receiving reinforcement. I've only used static shock if he was about to possibly die (ex., chased a car). Pretty sure being run over by a car or truck feels worse than one static shock. 99.9% of the time, he got a TONE to interrupt his behavior of not recalling. A Catahoula is not a retriever. They are extremely energetic and all business when on a scent. They can run for MILES and are fast. Not as fast as a Greyhound, but they do have the double suspension gallop and you will only keep up with them in a vehicle of some kind. If they don't recall, they can be very far away when they stop running and get lost. Mine was missing for two days before I'd had the chance to really train him, as he was 1 1/2 years old when I rescued him. The tone breaks their focus and then they are likely to actually hear your command. You will find that most people who hunt their dogs will use a training e-collar and train them to recall when they hear the tone. He rarely wears the collar now as it isn't needed.
@lorpsandorps3729
@lorpsandorps3729 3 жыл бұрын
@@ificandoityoucandoit6948 I showed my dog who was alpha by being consistent and hand feeding him. The e-collar was not used to punish him. It was used to get his attention when he was allowed to run free. If Catahoulas don't have the regular opportunity to run for miles at full gallop, they become miserable jerks. They are not bred to be housepets. They need to work. And they have to be trained to recall or they will run very far once on a scent. Most people who have dogs that hunt will use an ecollar to train them to recall once they hear the tone.

So if they pee in a room and you don't see it, find it like 20 minutes later, you just say "AHHH! AHHHHHH!"???....... I agree you should never hit a dog but you make it seem like you're a helicopter parent or something and they never leave your sight. What do you do if you find it later and dont catch them in the act.....

You clean it up, and then you streamline your training technique so that they learn, and never go in the house again. My Catahoulas only pottied in the house when they were sick- a total of 3 times between 2 dogs that I had for 13 and 10 going on years, respectively. Puppies need to go out every 30-60 minutes. Use praise when they potty. I use the bell technique where you tie a bell to the door on a long string so the dog can tap it with their paw when they need to go out. To train them to use it I say, "outside" and then pick up their paw and hit the bell before opening the door. If your dog is smart they pick it up fairly quick.

Please help me. Please. My 20 week old Catahoula/Pit mix is VERY jealous of my husband. Any time I give my husband any amount of attention Anubis will pee or poo on the floor. He is potty trained. He doesn't just pee either. He will pee while walking across the house. But ONLY if I give my husband attention. How do I fix it? My husband said if I can't fix it I'll have to get rid of him cuz Anubis is causing turmoil between my husband and I. I do what you do only I say in an elevated and stern voice "What'd you do?"
