It's ridiculous. Some trainers are saying you should be counter-intuitive and not say uh-uh or no right when they choose to disobey because ThEn ThE DoG LeArNs BeTtEr. You say uh-uh or no, they don't do the thing you don't want them to do, you praise them. And then you practice it a few times more until they're not thinking about disobeying anymore.

Literally, if you bring treats out around any of my “problem dogs,” they won’t do anything you want them to bc their mind is “FOOD.” 🙄 They’re all rescues, too, which is probably why; they have a bad relationship with food.

@@alexandersquid4681 I'm no trainer and my dog isn't perfect, but I NEVER use treats to reinforce anything. I just don't believe in it. A dog should do what you tell it because it respects you as a caretaker as much as you respect it as a dog. Treats as a reward for a long day of training or just as an initial tool to help with distraction are one thing, but relying on them to get good behavior is a mistake, in my opinion. I've always just tried to keep my dog very present when I'm training him and kept up with it until he caught on. Your dog will never respect you if it just sees you as a treat dispenser whenever it plays the game right. Whether or not a dog behaves without incentives is when you really know whether or not they see you as the pack leader, in my opinion. Treats muddy that.

as a 60yrs ole woman who has owned dogs all my life, the last 30 some odd, pits... and as a mother of 4... I've never used treats for expected behavior, nor did I pay my children to help with chores within a home they live in as well...

@@donnaturner4795, I haven't watched this video yet ( sometimes I read some comments first ) there is absolutely no reason why treats can't be used when teaching a new behavior or reinforcing that behavior with distractions until it's solid. As with anything it's a tool and should be used as such ...and not a crutch. Once my dog is solid on that behavior that I've been teaching I don't need it anymore. Training treats as with any other training tool can be used incorrectly, it's all on how you use that tool. My dogs always have to earn whatever they want, that's obedience commands for every day life, with no treats needed.

I busted up laughing at 1:50 because this is essentially our dog and I've never seen behavior like that addressed in a training video before. This is the balance *necessary* in dog training. I don’t care what anyone says. You can either submit to living with an out of control, unhappy dog or you can teach your dog to live a happy, balanced life where rules and boundaries exist.

This. We have just as nutty dog at home (11-month old male Serbian tricolour hound mix). Positive reinforcement training only worked until a certain degree with him. Not to mention, our dog figured out us and uses any sign of weakness he sees. That's why we needed to use Joel methods. Dogs need boundaries for a happy calm life.

If your not (pardon my analogy) pretty much licking your dogs butt you’re “mistreating and abusing” them. I have honestly been sucked into the same way of thinking because of those people. I'm absolutely for being respectful and kind to our dogs (and kids). But there also need to be boundaries and clarity. There are so many dogs out of control, they can't even play with each other anymore and be social. And all the tiptoeing around them and purely pampering and being positive does absolutely nothing but creating spoiled, insecure, or overly dominant aggressive dogs that don't know how to handle a situation properly. I also believe in training tools like different collars, because they work with almost immediate effect if used right. That said things have to be used right and respectfully and not for torturing and creating a fearful dog. But showing a dog a few times kindly but direct what we need while also creating a loving bond, creates the best and most enjoyable life for a dog. If they don't really know what we want and what's not okay and they spend years with this insecurity or aggression problem until they maybe get it, it just creates a life of misery and stress. They only have about 12 years to life, so let's teach them effectively.

I adopted a adult siberian husky. Such and spazz when putt a leash on and a puller. This helped so much! For the first time today I had a well behaved dog walking WITH me. Not pulling me. It was insane. Thank you!

Oh yes, and it isn't always easy. I barely switched from leash to line today (to play ball), and because I turned to say hi to a neighbor, my dog literally shot off like a bat out of h..... The line got wrapped around my fingerand he almost tore off the top third. He also knocked over two side tables on the patio, in one fell swoop. Then, he looked at me like, "whoops, what happened - play ball." I corrected him, and we then played, with my finger throbbing. These giys are energetic and over the top. (GSD/Malinois mix - not for the average dog owner)

After the 6 month mark, some go through a phase where they're setting their jaw pressure so the satiation method works great too. My Dobe was 1.5 yrs old before he could not be left in a crate when we left the house. Not from a housebreaking standpoint (that only took 1 week and he only ever had 1 accident), but from a chewing standpoint. Hope that helps.

Do you live in Europe or not? Because I see the total opposite. I'm from Europe and we used to have a lot of aggressive dogs because owners didn't have the knowledge and information like we have now. Nowadays dogs are more social and behaved then 20 years ago in my experience

I think a big part of the issue is the % of dogs from shelters in people's homes today is much higher than 20 years ago. Getting a dog as a puppy and training them from scratch and getting a shelter dog with issues are not anywhere close to the same. That being said, even though these shelter dogs are harder to train people need to put the effort in. The dog I adopted 6 months ago spent 4 months as a puppy with a rich family nearby and they gave him back to the shelter because 'he was too much work' and they kenneled him for 20 hours a day. The first walk we went on it was obvious at almost a year old, they had never put him on a leash and gone for a walk or taught him even simple basics like sit, down, and paw. I use mostly Beckman's style of training for him and it works so well. Due to his anxiety from his owners (males) I have had to use a lot more treats and positive train for certain behaviors. If he was more hard headed and happy like my Boxers have been then he wouldn't need the treats for training.

@@benben071 depends where in europe you live. In Austria and Germany for example, you woun't see abandoned dog on street, or a dog that is not on leash while walking. But in some other countries abandoned dogs is huge bussines and ownrs also don't care if their aggresive dog is free to attack people. Autorities will react only if the dog bite or kill someone. Otherwise they don't care.

The hilarious thing is, is many people who will say such training is mean, etc. will have no issues using a shock collar, prong collar, or choke chain. It's a hands-off method of control & thus "ethical". I had a neighbor like this. They thought I was being "mean" to my dog - I've always adopted & retrained shelter dogs, and the dog I had at the time was an Elkhound with such high prey drive that when walked her at the shelter to see how she'd do with my gsd-mix she choked herself to near unconsciousness trying to get after squirrels - by using similar methods as here. That neighbor had a bully-type dog on a prong & said the dog "loved" it because the collar made the dog "manageable" without having to do much.

Hi. I think Jojo has Hip Dyspalsia. He has difficulties to sit down , and prefere to lay on the Floor. My doberman had exactly the same problem. He couldn’t walk , stand or sit for longer periods of time. Notice how he leans toward his left side when sitting. Poor Jojo

There's deffo something wrong with this dog in his hip region. Hat breed? I see Weimaraner in him & other breeds. Watch him walking, there doesn't seem to be much in he way of muscle in his rear end. He's beautiful, I wonder what age he is?

We took in a neighbor's pitbull just about a year ago after they’d kept him constantly crated for basically his entire life, done no training beyond "sit," "down," and "paw," and never taken him on a walk. Let me just say, after all the positive only methods completely failing, your techniques have given us a totally different dog than when we brought him home. He's only 3 & 1/2 now so there's still a lot of puppy in him, but he knows that when we say something, like "sit" or "drop it" or "come here," it's not optional. We *will* push his butt to the floor (gently, of course). We *will* make him let go of whatever he's holding onto. We *will* go get him, and play time will be over if he tries to pretend he just didn't hear us. And he is a *much* better behaved and *much* happier dog because we don't make him guess what is and is not acceptable behavior. Thank you, truly.

We had our first dog in the 80s. my god how things have changed since then. So many more dogs. An industry dedicated to scaring owners about what will harm their dog from a list of about 20 foods, telling them “no” will harm their confidence lol), no slip leads, treats for everything etc etc. People talking about dogs like they’re their toddlers. I used the release and pop method on our walk this morning for the first time after finding your channel yesterday. Bloody brilliant technique. The best walk we’ve ever had. Hardly any pulling and she was checking in with me and staying close and on loose leash. We will keep doing this method and get this perfected. I love your "go get" method! I have a lab mix that likes to bark through the fence at neighbors but while doing so won't come when called. I did the go get method two MAYBE three times and he knows if i call him whatever he is doing i will come get him if he doesn't listen and it's not worth the trouble for him. It was like night and day. Now when i go to let him outside to potty i can see him thinking about barking and he will turn around to check in with me and won't bark! Anyone who says positive only training has never had a stubborn or willful pet. To be honest my favorite phrase now is "i'm over it" it really sets a tone for training with no nonsense.

My shelter dog bit the leash when I first got him. "Drop it" didn't work. It was bad enough that we couldn't even finish our first walk. So I took him to a field on our route and waited for him to bite and tug the leash again. When he did, I wrestled him to the grass and didn't let him up until he released it and calmed down. No hitting, no yelling, just giving the command and spreading my weight out on him (I'm pretty skinny, so I wasn't worried about hurting him) until he submitted. A little rough-housing to show who was boss. Any time he tried to wiggle free, I'd just readjust my weight until he understood he wasn't going anywhere. He let go and we finished out walk peacefully, and that was the last time he bit the leash. That was seven years ago. I kind of knew he was a good boy and just needed a little perspective change. People are so afraid to try unusual things with stubborn dogs. Meanwhile, they'll spend weeks trying to do it the "ethical" way, as if a dog knows what that is.

I really appreciate you and all your videos. I’ve been binging all night. Me and my boyfriend adopted what we thought was a pit bull from the shelter. Turns out he’s a Dogo Argentino. Who’s been a stray his whole life. He’s also only 1. He is the most loving and caring dog to me and my bf but does the mouthing when we try to correct him or grab his collar or harness. He gets aggressive around other dogs, and also aggressive towards certain people. Not all people but certain ones. We can’t afford to get a trainer or put him through classes. So I’m very thankful for you and your videos. And seeing your level of sternness makes me feel better because I know I’m doing it correctly and I’m not being “abusive” like people would say. I’m constantly having to discipline and raise my voice at our dog (Arroe) because he gets into everything. He misbehaves so terrible and it’s hard. He also has selective hearing. We’ve trained him sit, and lay. But only does it when he wants to do it. Only does it if you give him a treat. So when he met my roommates dog. They got into it because Arroe doesn’t understand social ques and when we would try to correct him or tell him to sit he wouldn’t.

Maybe not a popular thought but I’d check out a dog’s back or other possible source of distress/pain that the dog is avoiding staying in a position that stresses it. Backs, legs, paws can be painful esp w/4 legs. It can be jus silly but maybe not. Pets can have gotten a tweak somewhere in their big moving & rough play. They’re stoic or silly over stuff. Not that this applies exactly to this big long back dog. Js

I'm glad to know this dog is 90lbs it looks like you shrank! But this is really useful information! My pup is 8mos and was mouthy and I changed from a treat based trainer (convenient class times) to a trainer more like you (who I worked with 10 yrs ago) and your methods are tried and true. Truth is hard

I have a super high energy thinks everything is a game big strong Husky/Wolf. I remember my dad being a super skilled trainer for his dogs and these methods you use remind me soo much of that! Ive never had such a high energy dog before and these tips have helped a ton with him. Especially because I got him when he was just about to turn 2 so a lot of what he does is because of lack of training while he was a puppy.

Thank you for this video! We just rescued and adult dog and while he is very good overall. He is a young adult and gets excited and jumps when he wants to play or we come home and gets mouthy at times. Love you’re videos and I’m learning a lot!

Tried the collar technique on my Aussi/Border cross that was trying to delay going on her evening walk by lying on her back with feet on the air pretending to be cute. Can't believe the effect was almost instant instead of me wrestling her to stand up we were walking! Love the videos and all the advice. Keep it up as we need help in the UK too.

We only use martingale collars for our dogs to prevent escaping the collar! They make great everyday collars as well as training collars!

Agreed! My pup did a move and escaped from a choke chain one day. Since then I have used the Martingale as his standard collar. One mistake like that can cause a dog to be run over and killed.

I just realized the importance of ambiguity in the OK: Pay attention to me not just my words...As I became educated it was not good to think I knew all the answers but, we need to think we understand and prove it by analysis to learn and gain clarity. What a great concept--I have been watching for a year or so and some of the finer points of training are becoming clear. Having an open mind helps me to learn new things...there's always something.

This is awesome, my young puppy does this a few times a day and quite often during witching hour and when you try to put him in a sit he will mouth my hands while making sounds like an angry racoon. He will go dead weight and lay down, and when you think he calms down and eases up he will look at you the eyes bulge out and jumps at your arm and hands again. Thank you for showing this and how to deal with it, I tried to pull him up into a sit but he wouldn't but I will keep trying.

I did not know there was an actually witching hour for dogs but I learned the hard way that YES there really is a witching hour and my puppy is crazy from 5pm to 8pm which is so very frustrating because she behaves all day.

@@terridavis9278 I have the same issue with my puppy, have you found any ways to deal with that behavior? I've had to resort to putting him in his crate if he doesn't settle down, but then I get barking non-stop. Trying to figure out how to break that too. Tried Joel's suggestion of banging on the crate and issuing a command to "settle" or quiet" but it hasn't worked.

Take them out for a walk at that time, try run off some of that excess energy & craziness, it doesn't always work, as my 7 month old puppy sometimes still has endless energy & crazy behaviour after the walk, but it does help sometimes

@@MrMulligan84 I got hard rubber toys that I run water over and stick in the freezer so they are very cold and hard for the puppy to chew on and it gives me some peace for a while. That is after I take her outside and let her run, spin, jump (on a leash). She wont walk on a leash at this time so I just let her go nuts for a few minutes then take her inside and put her in her kennel with the frozen hard toy to chew on.

I have watched this video several times, because my dog is a real clown, too, not ever aggressive. It really helps me. I appreciate the variety of dogs dealt with by Joel, but there aren’t many that I can find that deal with silly impulsivity like this (adorable) dog. I catch myself getting caught up with my dog’s antics and he ends up winning his way. Thank you for reminding me that we have to be “over it”.

Love your no nonsense approach. My son thinks you have to give a dog an incentive to do what they are told. I told my son that the incentive is because I said so. I have a young dog with dominant personality so I don’t let her get away with ever saying “no”. She also does the mouthing and whole world is a game routine.. Thanks for the insightful video.

Thank u! I have tried pure positive reinforcement it works to a degree, but it's not the total solution. I enrolled in one of those courses just for myself. I worked with it. My little M is a brute. So glad he's not 150 pounds. I do really have to be stern and yet praise him for doing well. He's 10 pounds of attitude. I have never worked so hard on a dog. I love him so we keep working with him. Thank u for so many training tips that I'm using constantly ❤
