Correcting the half hour strike on a clock movement. Clock repair basics.

Mine strikes fine on the hour but half hour it will twitch but no chime.. the chimes still match the hour amount but no half hour for some reason. I just cant figure out how its designed to chime once on the half hour without resetting the hourly chimes back to 1 each time. I can either get it to chime once the half hour once and every hour it chimes 12 times or i can get it to chime right on the hour but not at all on the half.. dont see how it could have broken.. now it was over wound which just meant releasing a cog and allowing tension to spring loose and i put a new one in.. 250+ yr old clock that my grandfather was given from his grandfather.. says deshays a paris so i guess its an okd frenchy thing.. cant figure it out.. think its time it goes to the dump..
