Here's some advice too. Make sure the things you want to talk about with them aren't under an NDA. Make sure they can talk general techniques. How much are they keeping the artists in mind when developing? I know some of these dudes explanations plus your guys ability to put the actual uses as visuals to them will hit.

The thing that always gets me with this show is how brutal the laser eyes are. Like, laser eyes are always depicted as a relatively tame power. Useful, yes, but seeing them just absolutely shred people, buildings, planes, is a completely different level. DC or marvel laser eyes would probably leave a mark on the plane, but wouldn't slice clean through like it does here and I kinda love it

The point made by Niko around 16:10 is a good example of how understanding film is still crucial when doing higher level VFX work. It would have been easy to just comp that and pull the focus down through blurs and be done with it. But those little touches that still try to model what the camera (or our eyes in other cases) would see is what marries everything together. Props to The Boys for committing to the use of both practical and VFX.

that's the thing that sucks when people call out "bad cgi". A movie can have a hundred amazing cgi shots, but then as soon as one shot looks slightly bad, which most of the time isn't even the fault of the vfx artists, everyone starts talking about how bad the cgi is, completely ignoring every other shot. Black Panther is always the movie that comes to mind, most of that movie looks great, but there's that one horrible looking fight scene because the vfx artists were rushed, but I never hear people talk about the good cgi, only the one bad shot

Back in the early 80s there was a show hosted by Leonard Nimoy called "Standby: Lights! Camera! Action!" Loved that show, both for the subject matter and its host. 😃 Didn't it air on Nickelodeon? It covered a wide variety of subjects, not just optical effects, such as dialogue and accent coaching. Just as Corridor Crew is a spiritual successor to Lights! Camera! Action!, that show probably got made due to the interest in the various "behind the scene" specials that aired on network TV that covered the Star Wars films, ET, and other effects enhanced blockbusters.

Interview With the Vampire - when Claudia cuts Letstat's cheeks is another great example of face cutting effect. It had some pretty cool effects in general for it's time
@jmalmsten
@jmalmsten Жыл бұрын
That cheek-cut made me remember an old lesson I learned from the behind the scenes materials of Paul Verhoeven's sci fi movies. I think it was the nail color change shot in Total Recall in particular. The lesson was that if you have the choice of adding an effect in shot or removing it from the start of the shot... Always opt for the latter. Because if you start with something painted out and then reveal the real footage with animatronics and prosthetics and practical effects during the shot, the audience won't be looking for the telltale signs of CGI until the CGI is already gone. Not entirely applicable to the cheek wound, as they did end up replacing the makeup wound anyways. But it is still one of my go to rules with CGI and compositing.

What's extra killer about this one is that it's not just about the techniques that go into the VFX; Fleet walking us through the day of the comp sandwich shot really puts a lot of things into perspective. Sure, it's a ton of work, but there's a process for making that day go smoothly, and a good VES knows just as much about directing the people working on the project as they do about making the effects themselves.

I love that Gunpowder was played by Sean Patrick Flanery. It was fitting seeing a Boondock Saint playing a Supe with the power of gun.

Still one of the best shows on TV. The Boys is amazing. They really do nail the gore effects and making things look more realistic than they should. When swatter got hit with the missile and that smoke blew away it was perfect
