"Corrosion Free" Torx Tools - Part 1

A look at a couple of corrosion resistant Torx L-Keys tools. We'll leave a sample outdoors exposed to the elements for a while to see what kind of protection they really offer.

Not long ago you tested the Wera L-Key sleeve compatibility with solvents, and asked for recommendations on other solvents to test. I even weighed in with some research I found online, but I have a new suggestion. Please test the sleeves with Methyl Ethyl Ketone. I've been building a fixture for work which will be exposed to MEK regularly, and I've found that it eats almost all polymers, except for nylon, teflon, and corian. If the sleeves are made of PVC it will become gummy quickly. HDPE will do better but will still degrade. Nylon won't react. Thanks for putting these tools to the test!

After a few years (not a power user) of owning Wera’s stainless steel hex set, I have wanted them to produce a stainless torx set. Bought them first thing I heard about them, two weeks ago. Chuffed! 🥰

From what I was taught the use for the stainles hex and torx keys is to be used on stainless hardware. If you use the plain steel on stainless fasteners, metal particles from the tool embedd in the fasteners cavity and start to rust. You end up with a more expensive stainless bolt that starts to look rusty inside the hole where you loosen and tighten it. According to a motorcycle mechanic tutor I had. Can't confirm, never tested it.

On bicycles it certainly seems to make sense. Some of the stainless bolts I use do have some rust on the inside.

That is absolutely correct. Aside from storing in a wet environment (like on a boat) there is very little use for stainless tools on non-stainless fasteners. I own multiples of about every hand tool any decent tool store carries and don’t own a single stainless steel driver. I’ll look for any excuse to buy a new tool, but I don’t do much work with stainless fasteners and the little that I do, I don’t care if they aren’t pretty.

I myself don't use them either for the work that I do, rarely come across stainless fasteners. You made definetly a good point for use on boats, especially because marine applications use alot of A4 grade stainless fasteners. Didn't occur to me that there would be a market for stainless tools there. The tutor I had is a very good mechanic and I do trust his opinion on this matter. Just never had a need for them either

Thanks especially for weighting! I've one more idea for an experiment, now that you have an abused normal key set: Benchmark waxy conservants/coats for long-term storage (I guess gun shops in the US will have such) against Ballistol, which actually is for cleaning and maintenance. That is, use one different product per key.

You need a scale that can weigh hundredths, much better for small and light objects.. You can weigh a drinking straw wrapper when its out to the .01 of a gram. I love these type of videos and especially the weather test ones, living out in the PNW a tools finish is important to me.

You should look up Asta A-CP25K universal pliers wrench 250 mm. Look identical to the knipex version but half the price. I wonder if its a fake or a rebrand

What is the gadget you used to trim the plastic off? It looks vaguely familiar, but I can't definitely place it. Is that one of those Knipex cable stripper things? If so, what do you think of it?

I think it would be a more realistic test if you used the tool for a while before putting outside. What we need to see is how repeated use effects the outer coating.

Do you have a tip to prevent rust on my Gedore Waterpump plier and their short black coded l Keys? They start now to rust...

Coat them in 3 in 1 oil whenever you use them. Works on my cobras!

The main consideration with tools is NEVER corrosion resistance but how good they are. Are they hard enough yet will yield enough to not be brittle? Corrosion isn't a problem if you take care. Since almost all forms of stainless or corrosion resistant metals are a lot softer than tool steels I would be more concerned if they can actually do the job.

The only time I would ever consider a need for a stainless tool would be on a show piece where you don’t want any rust inside the head of a fastener. At this point in my life I am far more interested in form over function, so I have no use for crappy tools that keep things pretty.

I was quite disappointed with my Wera Torx HF L-key set in that it often just doesn't fit fasteners depending on tolerances, especially TX30 and up. I think the non-HF ones are just a better buy for most people unless they have a specific use case, unlike the the hex keys where I pretty much always prefer the HF ones.

Bury it in the ground. It will be subjected to more moisture and speed up rusting process.

Off topic question. Are the knipex strippers model 13-92-200 suitable for 12/14 awg? They are obviously stamped in euro size 2.5 and 1.5... So I'm getting mixed reviews but knipex does not make a spring loaded pair of strippers with 12/14 awg stripping holes. So I figured I would ask the expert. My apology if you have addressed this numerous times. I just really want yo order them and dont want yo be disappointed and waist time and money.

metal on metal contact with a stainless steel board will increase corrosion speed

The metal is iridited aluminum, but you are right there will be some galvanic corrosion. I would expect it to only happen on one side thought so it should be obvious.

What type of stuff are you interested in? I’m sure Mr. GTR would want the input. Side note, most of the Sparkies I know use Klein tools but I (IT weenie who can barely grasp Ohm’s law) can’t stand Klein screwdriver grips.

@@BlindBatG34 yes klein is used but knipex is like snap on to a mechanic. I'm not sure if there is a huge market for show casing tools specific to my trade. It would suck if he put them out there and they bombed. Couldn't ask that lol

BlindBatG34 Klein sucks. The sparkies are still living in the era of their grandfathers when Klein was the best available. These days Knipex, Wera, and Fluke blow anything Klein has to offer out of the water.
