I've been on a gondola-ride before. It's a boat experience like none other I've ever witnessed. There's something remarkably relaxing in traveling in a gondola down a silent and calm backstreets of Venice. If you ever go to Venice, I'd highly suggest taking a gondola trip.

Imagine if samples of interesting gondolas had been preserved throughout the centuries, and a museum housed many of them. How amazing. Today you see one gondola, you have seen them all. Even though I have been to Venice a number of times since the 1970s, I never considered boarding a gondola, although it is a pleasure to see them go by, especially in smaller canals with quiet settings. For me there are two secret pleasures of Venice; eating cicchettis (especially grilled baby sepias!), and finding quiet areas where tourists never go. And, Goddess knows there are plenty of them for the adventurous visitor. Il Veneto is one of the magic regions of our planet.

I proposed to my fiancé on a gondola in Venice. Truly special experience. The skill of the gondolier is what impressed me most. There were more than a few times where I said “oh we’re definitely gonna hit that” in my head, only for the gondolier to perfectly place the boat within an inch of what I thought we were going to hit. The only thing we touched the whole time was water.

Nice lesson. With all the little bridges across the canals, you'd think they would make all of them high enough for the gondoliers to glide their boats through without bending over. But even some of the most common routes have overpasses forcing the gondoliers to bend over.

welshpete12 It’s called a ferro da pròra and it’s used to protect the gondola from collision and also as a counterweight to the gondolier at the opposite end. The ferro contains six prongs below the “Doges hat” which represents each district of Venice. The hat represents the Rialto Bridge.

No when you say "Venice" I don't think about a peaceful city full of waterways. When you say "Venice" I think about the other Italian city states and the beauty of the Italian Renaissace and FUCKING MILAN WHO INVITED THE FUCKING FRENCH TO COME DESTROY THE BEAUTY. Thanks to my European History class, that is what I now think of when I hear "Venice."

Gondolas are nice but it is outrageous to pay around 80-100 EUR an hour. Maybe if you are an all-out tourist but for young visitors you can enjoy a delightful meal for two along the canal for that price. :)

What the heck is that "calle del squero"? That's spanish, vernice is in italy, in Italian that would be "via dello squero"...
@branf100
@branf100 9 жыл бұрын
martina14890 Venice is part of Italy now, but for most of it's history it was it's own city state. That is what the video refers to when it said "the most serene republic" and it had it's own language. Although very similar to Italian a lot of words for common things were different (calle instead of via for instance) and most visitors would speak Italian with the locals as they did not understand Venetian. Hope that helps.
